Yeah the Wahl Peanut is pretty solid for that - gets close enough for razor follow-up and the guards are actually decent for consistent length

Wahl also makes a few that run off AAs, there's a one made for horses that is much more travel friendly than the peanuts and comes w an adjustable gaurd. Obv lower power, but good to keep hair at a maintainable length every few days and keep NiMH AAs charged so never stuck with a dead razor.

Get a plug in. My wahl peanut is 15 years old- they have been making them for 30 basically unchanged. You can buy replacement parts easily and will be able to for the foreseeable future since they have been around forever. Straight hair head shaver/buzzer? Want to begin doing my own hair at home. Or to keep me, lacking the hair...
I haven’t paid for a haircut in 30 years, gone through 4 or so sets of clippers. Most recent set are Wahl Magiccut (cordless). They are my most expensive clippers at about $200 but they are great- one charge lasts months and probably 6+ buzz cuts, also comes with a long cord so can also be used that way.

If your hair’s straight and you’re going short or bald, a basic Wahl or Andis clipper will do the job forever. Corded beats cordless for power and longevity. If you want full smooth, a foil shaver works better than a buzzer, but it’s optional. Start cheap, upgrade only if you feel the need.

Are you set on battery? A plug in model will last forever. And most people use them in the bathroom next to an outlet. I still use my wahl peanut I got for Christmas in high school over 15 yeaars ago. They have been around basically unchanged since the 90s. They are inexpensive. And have replacement parts and blades available on Amazon and most beauty supply stores.

Hair clipper for home use (Men)
I know this is old, but Im gonna respond anyhow in case anybody else comes back to this thread. You're 100% correct as stuff is made SO cheap these days. When it comes to clippers though Ive been digging into this topic for a month as I like to buy the mest for longevity. The better professional Wahls are made for constant use for real barbers. Half of the stuff I've been reading the guys have their stuff for like 15 years before they need to change over the motor, and that's only sometimes. But everything in them most guulys could change out the parts themselves. Just as an example the Wahl Professional Senior is made for bulk removal. This would be especially good for somebody with African decent or any other ancestry with extremely thick hair as it's literally known to be able to crunch right through all hair types. You tend to get more accessories and options with the civilian market stuff, but the professional market stuff will last SO much longer, hence the price difference. I was actually thinking the Senior would be great for little kids hair, not because of how thick it is but rather because it's known to be able to cut with a single pass rather than numerous passes. Being that powerful though also means ot will be less forgiving. So if you make a mistake it's probably gonna be bad! Lol The back half of the body is also metal, so if you're accident prone like me it's a little more forgiving in that sense. Ya can buy em on ebay for a ton cheaper than regular store too. The blades on the professional models are also alot better than the cheap home use stuff. Which is why at the barbers they always seem to work better. It's like using a high end knife vs a dollar store one, it's gonna cut 1000 times better and will last longer.

Best downstairs hair trimmer for men?
Yeah . I feel for you men. Especially as you get older . My hubby complains his are sagging now . So it makes it even worse for him . We ladies have the tiny raisin to deal with . I’ve cut mine a couple times even with the guard on and it sucked ! I’ve used a wahl peanut all these years . But it died. Hubby and I both like to keep a little length to avoid the sandpaper feeling . We both have such thick hair that no matter how close we go with razors , it’s instant sandpaper that stays that way for DAYS . It’s uncomfortable for both of us in our own bodies , let alone during intimate times . Wish I’d not thrown my back out so many times waxing myself. That’s THE way to go . He said he’d learn to wax me and I know I can wax him . But I’m scared cuz I don’t think he knows what he’s signing up for if I wax him . Haha. 🤣. He’s watched me do my own waxing . And I’m really tough regarding the pain. But he can get a small cut on his finger and come running to me to doctor it . We both do construction and we’ve both gotten injured on the same day . His injury will be tiny and he freaks out . Meanwhile, I’ll have blood gushing down my arm and just wrap a rag around it and keep going 🤣🤣🤣

Zero guard beard trimmer that won't nick my neck and face? Does the Peanut nick?
I can second the Peanut being solid if you take your time - the trick is really keeping it flat against your skin and not getting too aggressive with it. That said, if you're already dealing with a dying battery on the Braun maybe look into just replacing the battery first since you already know it works for you

Zero guard beard trimmer that won't nick my neck and face? Does the Peanut nick?
I have not had my peanut nick or poke me at all. My larger Wahl trimmer is even more gentle, and the blade is adjustable. My Andis carving trimer was a closer shave but was more prone to poking and nicking. I do miss it though - gave up the ghost after about 20 years and I never replaced. Trimming sideburns was so nice with that trimmer and the peanut doesn't quite get as close. I guess it's a trade off.

Zero guard beard trimmer that won't nick my neck and face? Does the Peanut nick?
i have a lot of problems with shaving, thick curly hair that grows in if you so much as look at it i use a wahl corded clipper (not sure the model) with the 1/2 guard, it is all that works for me. I can also shave with no guard but some of the hairs come out a bit too close for me personally, though it does not nick I recently tried the laifen p3 pro to switch things up, it was a close/clean shave not adjustable, best close shaver i have tried but still not good for my skin personally i also have a wireless usb c cheapo version of the wahl that works ok, though it does pull more, no clue why, and it is not adjustable without the guards installed unlike the corded one for me the plug in wahl has been trucking unbothered for over a decade, so it is bifl grade for sure

Zero guard beard trimmer that won't nick my neck and face? Does the Peanut nick?
If you angle a pointy thing wrong, it will poke the skin, period. I've had a corded peanut for a long time and while I have poked myself, it only happened when I was in a hurry and caused the problem. If I pay attention and keep the cutter parallel to the skin I don't have any problems. Pulling the skin taught over uneven areas, like the chin and jawline, is important too.

Recommendations for a BIFL all-in-one hair trimmer?
OP did you find one you like? I found it funny not one commenter offered an “all-in-one” trimmer, which I feel is defined by having a nose and foil attachment. Best hair clippers that’ll be effective and last
The classic 76 comes with the 000 blade which is pretty slick, I use that because I don’t care to bic my head. The Fastfeed is about 90$ online today, the Classic is about 180. I’m using the same retails for that. I got mine on ebay, corded (not cordless), for I think 125. A shade under 200 is a big pill to swallow, looking at it today…. I CAN say the classic 76 is a one and done. That is something your son(s?) will be able to use to cut your grandkids hair one day. I looked at the cost for a haircut vs booting it for these, and within a year I’m in the green. But I’m going bald and keep my hair buzzed, every 2-3 weeks if I can. One thing I do remember from the barbers using these for actual styling is that the fastfeeds will do better with fades. Not necessarily BETTER but easier, because they’re less cumbersome.

What's a purchase under $50 that has genuinely improved your daily routine?
A great Wahl clipper, got one on sale with a ton of attachments, it's plastic on the outside but has the same motor as the higher end one. I've used it at least weekly for years now for I and my partner (we both have buzzed hair). Phillips Oneblade goes on sale a lot, the blades last way longer than a standard razor, and the battery lasts ages. It's not as close as a skin shave but it's great for the face and areas you don't mind being not PERFECTLY dolphin smooth, and has never caused a cut or ingrown on either of us. Good Japanese nail clippers, Seki Edge were life-changing for me. It's weird to think how annoying another pair of clippers was until I forgot it at home and had to use another. Not really a BIFL, but a great sunscreen will save you a fortune down the road, because you'll actually WANT to use it. It will mean less photoaging and less skin cancer risk, and cancer is expensive. I usually buy Korean ones, Skin1004 or BOJ. Reusable cloths instead of paper towel and cotton pads. Extra pillowcases, because if you change and wash them frequently, you will have better skin and hair, and also save money on allergy pills if you're allergic to pets or dust. Empty spray bottles and airless pumps, so you can store cleaning products and dilute them for less waste, as well as have a more controlled dispense from bottles that would normally push too much out of and force you to use it up faster. A magnetic bar to hang knives and keep them out of the way but also easy to access. A magnetized grocery list and attached pen for your fridge so you don't forget to write down what you use up, as well as clear bins to store things in the fridge so you don't forget something in the back and have to buy it again because it went off.

What's One Product You Bought Thinking It Would Be Temporary But It Ended Up Lasting You For Year's?
Years ago, I used to go to a barber shop to get my hair cut. I moved to a big city then, and had no idea who to go to for a haircut. So, I bought a cheap clipper set at Walmart and (very quickly and easily) learned to cut my own hair. I went through 3-4 cheap clipper sets that would jam up, get clogged with hair, rust, or start cutting me! (OUCH!) when I cut my hair, or they would just quit working, over the next couple of years. Then, one day I went to a Sally's Beauty Supply and spoke to a sales lady that worked there. She recommended a higher end Wahl clipper that cost about $50 back then, and I still have it, with the original blades on it, and it still works as well as the day I got it 20+ years ago! You just have to keep the blades oiled and cleaned. Seriously, this thing still works like a dream!

Closest shaving hair clippers?
I have been using the same Wahls trimmers without any blade guard every week or two since 1980. I oil it regularly and keep the blades adjusted. It still has the origional blades on it. I origionally got it to touch up my flat tops but my wife's hand slipped once and she took out a divot and I just shaved it as close as it would go and have done that since. I see people here also recommending Skull Shaver. I have the Pitbull Gold and have never been impressed with it and the blades don't last very long. Very picey and over rated. When the blades are new, you get a few decent shaves but they clog quickly and need constant cleaning to get a good, clean shave.

I recently picked up the beardscape brio, it has a tapering function on the razor and comes with a large set of guards. Before that I had a wahl aquagroom that lasted around 10 years, I only had to upgrade because I couldnt find replacement blades that fit.

Beard Trimmer with *Replaceable* battery?
Wahl do a very small beard trimmer that takes a single AA battery. I think the model number is known as 8066. I use it for travel when only having hand luggage as it is very compact and light and works fine with standard rechargeable batteries. It's pretty basic (on, off, combs and that's it), very simple and cheap. Despite its low price, it seems well built and have enjoyed using it for about 5 years without any issue. the Wahl can do that if you don't adjust them right as they have two screws that control the blade spacing. Osters are set and forget, I have not had an issue with either of them once I disassembled, greased, and reassembled/adjusted the Wahl blade (it was way too tight when I first got it)

Wahl 5 star Senior or Oster Classic 76, Wahl has a few longer guards (10 or even 12) that I have not been able to find for the Oster, so if you want to run a guard that long, the Wahl is the pick. But the blades are much easier to deal with on the Oster. I actually think the Oster is a tad more powerful and takes less passes, but I have both and have been extremely happy with both of them.

Norelco 7000/9000 series stuff and wahl peanut are most recommended. Try searching through the subreddit for “trimmer” and you’ll see some comprehensive responses. My husband uses the norelco one blade and his only complaint is the guards are cheap plastic and break. The razor itself he’s used for ~7 years but he says it’s no good for the neck… he’s also a baby

I've got two, a Wahl hair trimmer that I've had for 20+ years and Bose QC head phones that are older than my children. I've only had to change the blade once on the former and the ear pads twice on the latter.

I don’t have that specific one. Bought another Wahl one, and it did well until my son dropped it on tile, and I could never realign the blades. (That’s user error and impatience.) Anyway, bought another one, it’s still used monthly. And going strong.

I have a Wahl profession corded trimmer that I have had for 30+ years. I am an old punk, and shave my head a couple of times a week with it. And, I guarantee it will outlast me...and if it does break, there are repair shops that can rewire the cord/plug, sharpen the blades etc.

Hey does anyone know of a good body/face trimmer?
I don't know about face trimmers specifically, but I've had two pairs of clippers (for head hair) from Wahl and have been very happy. My first pair was $22 (corded) from big box store and I used them for 8 years. I only bought a new one because I wanted something cordless. New one I've had 5 or so years and it's going strong. Never changed the blade on either. They weren't waterproof, but I'm not recommending the specific model. Just saying that I've had a good experience with Wahl, and they also make beard/body trimmers.

Beard Trimmer (for thick beards down to stubble) - is Wahl Balding Professional a good choice?
I use 1400. It's not too heavy for me. It is if you are a professionist handling it for hours, but if you use it for 5 minutes to trim your beard or hair... Regarding the beard trimming, if you just need to trim and not to define your beard it's fine. The only difficult part is mustache, where a smaller blade would be better. But I use comb and scissors in that area.

For home use, I’d recommend the Wahl Color Pro Plus . It is super beginner-friendly with its color-coded combs, making it easy to remember your preferred lengths. Cut your hair with no guard… lol. So you’re bald. I actually have hair— thick hair— and I notice a huge difference between my old cheap Wahl clippers and my more expensive Wahl clippers, which also happen to be cordless. The more expensive ones don’t take 12 passes to properly cut my hair. To me, that’s worth the extra 100 or so dollars for a pair of clippers that I’ll have to replace once every five years. I’m not on this subreddit because I’m afraid to spend fifty dollars. I’m on it because I like quality things. I find the more expensive clippers to be worth the money to me.

Wahl gets my vote. First cheap-ass catalogue clippers got handed onto a friend after 20 years and still going strong. Replaced during the pandemic with a more expensive one. You need to pay more now (£60 or so Vs £15 in 1990-something) but they're still good. Mail-in service for blade sharpening costs peanuts in the UK.

I had a friend that is a hair stylist. Several years ago I asked her about the Wahl pet (dog) version of the clippers she used professionally because they were 1/4 of the price. She couldn’t find a difference other than that the case was plastic vs metal and it came with fewer guards to set the cut length. I’ve been using that “pet” version for about 20 years and have zero complaints.

If you git some very thick/difficult to clip hair might be work getting a bit higher end but if its just personal use you dont need to get crazy. I mainly wanted to make sure you weren't planning on like dog grooming of something where use level would be extreme enough to justify going higher end lol

Beard trimmer reccomendations?
I got a Wahl trimmer/clipper combo from Costco for $40. Can’t beat that can just use the clippers for length and trimmer to get it crisp.

Beard trimmer reccomendations?
Wahl and Andis are the gold standard. I'd post in, I believe it's r/barber It sounds like you want clippers instead of a trimmer and it's not an issue of quality. I personally got an Andis combo that has both. Got them in 2020, use the set at the very minimum once a week and they still work like new. Depending on your length of beard and how much you want to trim it down, I believe the best bet is to get comfortable free handing it without guards, but definitely check out that subreddit I don't personally know enough

Thinking of buying the Philips Oneblade pro. Not sure whether to get the regular black one or the gunmetal one. Any thoughts or personal review on these?
Thanks for this review. I'm leaning more towards a separate specialized groomer+wahl corded trimmer solution

Hair clipper for home use (Men)
I picked up a Wahl clipper set for home use, and it’s been solid. The corded ones tend to have more power, which helps with thicker hair, but if you want something cordless for a kid who might not sit still, there are good options too. Look for self-sharpening blades and a quiet motor...kids usually hate the loud buzzing.

Philips All in one trimmers Warning
Old thread, but I have a really old Wahl trimmer and it works fantastic. Truly BIFL.

What’s one product you bought that has lasted forever and was totally worth it?
I'm still using the same Wahls hair trimmer that I bought in 1980. I have used it every few days since I bought it as I have buzzed my head since then as I refused to pay $2.00 for a haircut

I have an extremely coarse beard and also use the Peanut. have had it for nearly 10 years and have replaced the blades once. I highly recommend as well.

Looking for a BIFL balding clipper that won’t leave my scalp with cuts every time
Hope I'm not too late here. I used to have the same setup as you do, but I was really happy when I switched to Whall Balding, although I did adjust it to have a closer cut.

If you're looking at short length. I have replaced my wahl rechargeable a couple of times. I have a long beard so I hand trim, but the wahl works. For nose hair, I did well with a cheap one on Amazon. I have the manscaped nose hair trimmer and it's garbage. The body hair trimmers are decent...don't spend a ton. Remember blades wear out too, so if you can't replace them on the beard trimmer, ymmv

for Beard you want corded. I like the Oster Classic 76 or Wahl Senior 5 Star (you can get longer guards for the Wahl they have a #12) I have the Wahl Stainless Lithium-Ion 2.0 Cordless Rechargeable for nose, ear, etc. It has worked and worked for I think 4 years at this point. It is solid, the attachments are good and easy to get, I can solidly recommend it.
