  my kid is wearing mostly his cousins hand me downs rn, but i generally buy on sale/clearance from h&m kids/baby, old navy and gap baby. old navy for some basics for a cheaper price (on sale) my toddler grows like a weed and is quite tall for his age so he outgrows things very fast. h&m things usually fit a bit bigger/long so i get more use out of them which is what i always prefer. I'm always told by people my son is really well dressed which always makes me happy as i do like to dress him up! A lot of his hand me downs are also from h&m and my nephew IS the best dressed toddler i know haha. I have had pretty bad luck with carters and nike stuff, runs small and shrinks a lot! i only use cold water to clean and low/air dry to dry all my things but they still shrink. for colder weather/thermals the wal-mart thermals are super comfy and the uniqlo warmest ones WILL keep ur kid cozy (they are expensive but imo totes worth it). but def lurk on the apps and check out the stores if youre ever in the mall i always find some deals in the sales/clearances

  Where are we all buying good quality dish towels that actually dry properly?

  Walmart flour sack towels. Not BIFL though. They are my absolute favorite after washing once. They dry so well, are easy to clean with some oxyclean, inexpensive, and they retire into great cleaning rags (so maybe they are BIFL if you count that). I buy a pack of 10 every 4-5 years. I like having a lot of dish towels because I prefer not to use long before washing.

  Yes! I wear cheapo leggings from Costco and 10year old cotton racerbacks from Walmart. Got my partner a set of 5 basketball shorts and he usually wears his older work t-shirts. These can all be manhandled in the machine and if they get gross, torn etc. I’m okay with it.

  Bath towels. I absolutely cannot stand using a fancy lush bath towel to dry off. The old scratchy Walmart towels always do the best job at drying you, and last forever. Same with bath mats actually. I look for the thinnest cheapest one because I hate stepping on a thick, water-soaked fluffy carpet.

  This isn't meant towards OP... but how in the world have we come to a point where water bottles are a luxury/collectors item worth $50? My advice OP, go to walmart and buy the $10 walmart brand double wall bottle. Same quality, different brand, 1/5 the cost. You can replace it 5 times over if needed before you reach break even on one of these.

  Stainless steel. I got my set from Walmart 20 years ago and I still use it nearly daily. I have my mother's stainless steel and it's easily 40 years old. I'm guessing you're buying nonstick? Nonstick doesn't last.

  Washing machine, I know it gets asked about a lot but…

  You may consider chux pads to help absorb, if you don’t use those already. Don’t buy from Amazon - the dog pee pads from Sam’s Club are literally 1/2 the price at a minimum. Walmart also has 100-packs much cheaper. Amazon does carry 2-packs of waterproof dog whelping mats (for about $29) which I’ve used for years - I had a dog with pee issues and it never soaked through to the other side. They wash easier than comforters or mattress protectors.

  Bed sheets that last?

  Nope! I had a flat sheet fail alternating sets in 18 months. Company literally said that was almost two years and normal (only 9 months of actual use). To compound this they coat the sheets in some kind of wrinkle guard that discolors even on the blue and gray sheets. Our remaining sheets from LL Bean are starting to look so gross I'm considering just buying the 400 thread count, cotton, better homes and garden ones on my kids beds that have lasted through a zillion washing, bed jumping, forts, etc. As an added bonus their a quarter of the price. **Unpopular opinion:** Walmart sheets and towels have been growing on me. We bought them for our bunches of barefoot farm kids figuring they'd be trashed regardless. To our surprise they've stood the test of time and still look great. I think we replaced two sets of heavily used sheets around the 8 year and 10 year mark, but in general they actually last. It makes me wonder what places like LL Bean are doing wrong.

  Not me….I shouldn’t be so excited about this because my investments made $24K yesterday but I bought a nice pair of jeans for $14 from Walmart, shipped free to my house. That is the same price I paid for them when I was in high school 50 years ago. The wonders of offshore child labor. Buy now before the tariffs hit. We’re doing pretty good after scrimping and saving money for all of those years. Never sent our cars to the shop once…learned how to do the repairs myself. Kept our cars for 27 years. Never had any debt except for a mortgage for a few years. Never bought anything we couldn’t pay cash for. If we didn’t have the cash, we didn’t buy it. It could have turned out the other way but God has been good to us. No major health problems until I broke my back 2 years ago.

  I know it’s late to comment but I don’t use top sheets , they’re sooo annoying , idk how they don’t bother you and if you use em , then how do you get comfortable holding a sheet at night ? Only places that should use sheets should been hotels , hospital , public sleeping places etc I have a big washer and I wash my bedding very often , spend 20$ on a Walmart blanket , it’s so warm and it’s been 8 years and it hasn’t faded or became any less soft.

  I just bought some pima cotton percale sheets from Walmart. They're 300 thread count, and a king set was $55 for the sheets and $25 for 2 standard pillow cases (the pricing makes no damm sense). They're not quite as soft as hotel sheets, but they haven't been broken in yet. They are nice and crisp, though. The construction seems OK, with no loose threads or wonky stitching. The fit is a little loose on the mattress. Since I just bought them, I have no clue about the lifetime of them just yet, but they check all the boxes for long-lasting sheets.

  Wirecutter or Consumer Reports for things I can't touch and try myself, like electronics and tools - they do not sell things, but they TEST things and rate them. Truthfully, with experts and parameters. (Hooray for ethical journalism!) Then you can click their link to buy the item on spamazon or wherever. Big box store (target, walmart, et al) for things I can touch and evaluate myself, like trays and baskets.

  What are some items under $500 you’ve made so far that changed your life?

  I bought the one from walmart for $20 and now I drink less than ever. What a fabulous improvement. Renting most of my clothes from thrift stores and when I stop wearing them I donate them back. All good brands someone paid full price for gets 2-3 of us happy. I buy protective eye wear at lumber stores and they are better sunglasses than Brands that cost 5x more. Who knew?

  Walmart brand items seem to last pretty long depending on the item. Stuff like coffee makers, soap dispensers, crock pots, air fryers, etc. No reason to buy the expensive brands on items like that because the knockoff is just as good, if not better due to having simpler mechanisms

  Personally I can't see the benefit of specific temp control, maybe from my own experience. I imagine when I purchased mine the temp controlled ones were out of my budget, and this was a time when BIFL was a true luxury, so I got mine at walmart. NGL a part of me regrets letting my walmart electric kettle go. It was $12, owned for 12 years then let go because we moved to a much smaller space. So while I cannot say for sure if it was BIFL, what I do know is in the 12 years it worked perfectly every time, and it likely had a couple decades left of use at minimum. There were plastic parts, but always felt durable. In terms of cost per use it was damn near free haha.

  I mean they aren’t buy it for life but Walmart etc sell like 15 packs of wash clothes, makes for enough to have on hand for single use before washing etc. For me they are big enough to dry hands or face. I personally can’t stand the feel of microfiber on my skin, especially if you have a single hangnail etc.. Otherwise I’d suggest going to the fabric store and touching/feeling some bolts of fabric and just cutting your own squares of one she likes.

  Walmart sells sets of multipurpose microfiber cloths (they are sometimes found in the auto section). They are extremely soft and relatively cheap. I sue the 14x16 inch ones. A set of 12 is about $10.

  They were probably made better 15 years ago, though. I've noticed that all the stuff I get compliments on are thing that are *old,* like 10+ years old. They literally don't make things like they used to. I'm glad I don't get rid of my old clothes, because a dress I got from Walmart 15 years ago is better quality than what I can get from Nordstrom today, and I'm not joking.

  u/Misericordee Delonghi is overpriced. Basically, the factories that make machines for Delonghi decided to go off and do their own and you have a ton of cheap machine on Amazon that are really good. My recommendation is to buy the Walmart $300 (down to $250 on sale) machine. Build in grinder and really good espresso machine..

  Where Does "Buy It for Life" Not Make Sense?

  Same with walking shoes. According to my walking app, I walk about 2 million steps per year. Shoes wear out quickly, so I just get cheapo Walmart crocs. Regular crocs for the summer and fake felt lined crocs along with heavy socks for the winter. Hips, knees, and feet are holding up well.

  Looking for a BIFL Car Battery

  I understand the premise of this subreddit. I'm not new here. Even the product you suggested lasts only slightly longer than traditional car batteries. Car batteries (in my professional opinion) do not fit the criteria for this sub. You can consider yourself lucky to get an extra year or two from a car battery, even an AGM like you suggested. My professional opinion is to buy the gold or platinum line from retailers such as Walmart, Costco, or O'Reilly's/AutoZone and hope for the best. Most batteries are made from 3 parent companies and there's not much variance. But continue to die on this hill if you choose.

  Looking for a BIFL Car Battery

  I was unaware of rule 1s specifics though I kind of intuitively knew it, so thank you for pointing that out. Regarding AGMs, Optimas, etc. Having been a mechanic and service writer for a decade, they're just not worth it. There is not enough of an upside in most average people's use cases to justify the extra cost vs how long they'll potentially last. A standard battery from Advance, O'Reilly, heck, the one I just put in my mom's car from walmart will be just as good. AGMs and Optimas shine in niche use cases that require specific performance.

  My friend goes through shoes/boots within a couple months, are there comfortable, lifetime quality options for restraunt workers in the 300usd range? Please advise, thank you

  I ran into this same problem sometime back when I was working in food service. I dont believe a nice pair of boots is going to be worthwhile here. I theorize that the detergants and bleach used constantly at close and in cleanup break down the adhesives and leather too quickly. Additionally non slip footwear, although a requirement via insurance etc. do diddly squat and are just as bad as one them plastic heeled garbage boots and are more expensive purely for certification reasons. So my remedy pretty much boiled down to where and how often too how effectively cheap i could make it. For example is he in the dishpit or the fry station? Waterproof muck boots worked well here in that case. On the line? The cheapest non slip to cover my ass worked well but varied on the restaraunts flooring options, concrete and lino with texture was great the hard tile in fast food, that shits ice no matter what you do. Delivery driving? Plan your entry into the kitchen at this point, i live in cold climate and my boots dont come off cause of the weather but theyd have me counting the specks in the drop ceiling if i hit oil on tiled floor. I used walmarts non slips in rotation but learned to judge quality and bearability to discomfort. 20 a pop at 3mo wasnt that bad, just penguin waddle as much as possible.

  Warmest beanie for Siberia - so what lil brains I have don't freeze.

  Minus 33 - I really like mine. It is very light, very warm for it's weight. It is a little small, it does fit a bit snugly, but it is very stretchy so it fits, it's just a wee bit snug. Rothco Jeep cap - OD Army issue - These are very nice. Not quite as warm. I do like the brim, though! Walmart used to carry an insulated acrylic polar or artic beanie. I've literally had mine for 20+ years. I have no idea if the new ones are as good. But it is actually too warm for "warm" days during the winter. As others have suggested - buying a local hat is probably best, I'd just grab one of these and wear it until you can get a local hat. Besides, a Siberian hat would be quite a souvenir, anyway.

  The difference between generations…

  1. My DAD was a hoarder, my mom got rid of everything when he died, but my mom also collects lots of old antique nicknacks like her mom did. I respect that. 2. I get this sentiment. I have a four year old now. It's wild, and my cousin has four boys, she's been donating unused toys to us. My son loves it. 3. I have Ikea/walmart style bookshelves that I've had for 5+ years and they are fine. I have a buddy who we picked up his whole bedroom set in 2009 from Ikea, I think he's replaced the mattress once. It's all still fine. If you buy shit products you'll have a shit time. Don't buy the $25 book case at walmart, but a little nicer one. Or buy one from the recycle store/thrift store that's made of actual wood if you are concerned about that. Even better buy a saw from a pawnshop and make your own. 4. This is all mostly right. Take better care of the stuff, I always tell me kid not to leave toys outside, they will get messed up and thrown away or stolen.
