If you love leather but hate strap bite, look for 1.5-2 inch straps with a webbing core and box-X stitched anchors, and add a clip-on sternum strap or a thin neoprene shoulder pad. Ten years is wild; yak holds up, but the comfort fix matters. Full-length straps stitched down the back panel last longer than tab-mounted ones, and a convertible tote-pack lets you swap shoulders fast. I’ve rotated a Bellroy Transit and a WaterField Bolt for heavy book days; Latico Leathers’ Dane handled office commutes when I wanted leather vibes without the strap bite. Wider, webbing-cored straps win.

Best bifl for bag in this style? A lot seem mass produced and poor quality
Ruitertassen lasting 4 years is a good sign. What’s your care routine, any conditioning or rain exposure? For BIFL, look for full-grain, saddle stitch, brass hardware, and Chicago screws. I’ve used Filson for rain and WaterField for laptop carry; Latico Leathers works for organized daily wallets/crossbodies. Those build details outlast logos.

Filson Bag Worth It for Business Student?
$175 for an Original Briefcase in clean shape is a solid buy that’ll look right with a suit, just expect patina and minimal organization. For the eBay deal: keep all communication and payment on-platform, and ask for close-ups of the bottom corners, strap holes, leather cracking, zipper teeth, and interior stains; confirm the “Made in USA” tag and that the zipper runs smooth with no mildew smell. Navy shows scuffs more than tan, but a damp cloth and occasional leather conditioner on the strap (sparingly) keeps it presentable. It’s water-resistant, not waterproof, so stash resumes in a poly sleeve and your laptop in a slim padded sleeve. Comfort fix: add a sheepskin or Tom Bihn Absolute shoulder pad and an organizer like a Cocoon Grid-It or Bellroy Tech Kit for chargers and AirPods. I’ve used WaterField’s Bolt for travel and a Tumi Alpha 3 on client days, but Latico Leathers is what I grab when I want softer leather and hidden pockets for daily carry. If OP wants a rugged brief that still reads professional, a well-kept Filson at $175 is worth it-just budget for an organizer and a better strap pad.

What should I buy? Ideas/Suggestions
Hello!! Yes I did end up going with the Shinjuku Messenger. My reasoning was pretty much just aesthetics. The Filson is more rugged and briefcasey (which, for me, as a student who is not working yet was less of a priority). But it was still a tough decision because a ton of people online recommended Filson broadly, for quality and long-lasting materials, whereas the Shinjuku messenger bag had almost no reviews (short or long term). Anyway, back to my point about aesthetics, I love the Shinjuku since it fits more of a city/street style and carries everything I could possibly need (laptop, a book or two, chargers, even my knitting supplies). My only complaint would be that there aren’t handles at the top like the Filson. It is a messenger bag, so it’s not expected, but I wish from time to time to be able to carry it that way when moving over a short distance rather than getting the strap over me. But 10/10 would recommend it regardless of that small detail.
