Looking for washer dryer recommendations in Canada
If it's an old classic Maytag dependable care washer, there is a hidden lint filter screen underneath the agitator. Often the lint screen can get clogged up, and can sometimes rip which will cause lint to go out the drain hose. The agitator is removed by removing a single 1/4" screw at the side of the base of the agitator, then pulling the agitator straight up. Your old machine could be easily fixed if that is the issue, and honestly it has a good chance of out lasting anything you might replace it with. If you must have a new machine though, look at a Hubesch (this is what Speed Queen is sold as in Canada), or a Whirlpool commercial model.

I went through this exact decision last year and ended up with a basic Whirlpool after my fancy Samsung started throwing random error codes that even the repair guy couldn't figure out The moisture sensors on those "smart" dryers are basically guaranteed headaches waiting to happen. My neighbor's still dealing with her LG that thinks everything is wet even when bone dry Honestly the old school knob and timer setup just works and keeps working. honestly, for a 1976 whirlpool, you should check out the automaticwasher.org forums. the guys over there are vintage appliance fanatics and usually have a lead on where to find old pumps or even have a spare stash of parts themselves. if that fails, try searching for the specific part number on ebay or antiqueappliances.com—sometimes you can find 'new old stock' that’s just been sitting on a shelf for decades. good luck, they don't make them like that anymore!

In your price range the plain Whirlpool stuff and the simpler Maytag models come out the best for basic reliability, they’re basically the same guts anyway and they do the job without fuss. Dryers are pretty straightforward machines but the clever bits bolted on for marketing are what usually cause the grief. The drum and motor rarely die unless someone never clears the lint. What really goes are the moistuer sensors, the little door switches, and the control boards that get cooked over time... you don’t want to be chasing mystery codes on a Sunday morning. If you want something that lasts, look for one with a plain mechanical thermostat rather than a whole bank of sensors pretending to be smarter than they are. Make sure the lint trap actually comes out fully so you can clear the chute or you’ll roast something inside. LG and Samsung push a lot of delicate logic boards and those do not enjoy heat and lint at all and that’s before they get a few years old. Skip anything bragging about advanced sensor dry because that’s usually the first thing to give you grief and a basic dial with simple controls will just keep going even if it looks a bit old school.

90s-2000 Whirlpool Washers/Dryers compared to say, Speed Queens. The ease of repair and the low cost of parts has allowed me to keep mine running over 20 years now, and I've maybe invested 200 into the machines themselves (both used) and maybe $20 dollars in replacing the worn out parts over the years (only had to do it twice, once for a Switch, and the others for the agitator teeth.

If you have a counter-depth refrigerator that has lasted longer than 15 years, what make and model is it?
Whirlpool. Granted, its "stainless" finish has corrosion here and there, the auto-lifting slide-out draw cover broke within a few years, the rubber door seals didn't last much past five years, and I occasionally need to use a hair dryer to defrost the coils in hot weather, but the compressor has kept on kicking without complaint or noise for just about 15 years now.

My thoughts exactly. I picked up a whirlpool with a bunch of bells & whistles for $500. It works great. I can buy 2 of them for the same price as a single Bosch 500. The probability that this thing dies on me more than twice as fast as a Bosch is extremely unlikely.

Find a used appliance repair man/woman. They usually repair and sell. I use a local guy. My stove is only push button for oven. Regular dials for eyes. My washing machine is a whirlpool with only 3 knobs- size if load, hot/cold water and cycle to turn it on. Love all my non tech appliances.

Absolutely. I still have my 20 year old Whirlpools, that I bought used for $150 a piece. With sites like partselect that show the entire breakdown of them, and the troubleshooting with every part available for purchase, I think I only spent like $6 for new agitator cogs, and it runs like brand new.

The ability to find replacement parts and cost of said parts should be considered. There is very good value in the top loading mostly mechanical maytags, whirlpools, etc. Mine are 12 years old. Zero problems with the washer. Replaced the heat element and thermostat in the dryer a couple of times...likely because of our wonky exhaust outlet. The parts were cheap, arrived in two days, and youtube helped me fix them quickly and easily. Some of the big front load LGs, will cost you a crazy amount to fix should something go wrong, plus some areas have a real shortage of repair people. This absolutely matters. I would take something that needs a couple of small, cheap, diy repairs over 10-20 years over something that only fails 2% of the time, but when it does it is catastrophic.

I know there is no such thing as a BIFL appliance, but what are your thoughts on this washer? Please no speed queen recommendations, they are too expensive and don't hold enough.
Personally, I would avoid LG, and lean towards Whirlpool, Maytag, Amana, Speed Queen, Kenmore, Frigidaire, Electrolux, and more. I know a few of those fall under the same parent companies, but they all specialize in appliances. If you want a Speed Queen but can't afford one now, maybe look at marketplace, nextdoor, etc for a local used one cheap and then save for a bit until you can afford the Speed Queen. I've seen washer dryer sets sell for $40 online and they'll usually run for a year or two at least and you could use that time to save and find a deal on what you actually want and something you know will last.

Look into bed pads- disposable or washable- easily available on Amazon. For a washer, top loader- speed queen is best but if price is an issue go with whirlpool. Costco has the best deals and return policy imo As for the odor, I had a LOT of luck with cloth diapers by pre-rinsing. Just throw in tub and hose down for a bit, once you feel like they got a good rinse, throw in the washer on a “deep” cycle with some borax and detergent, vinegar in for softener.

I bought a pair of whirlpool machines (metal tubs) with a zillion reviews from lowes 12 years ago and they have made it through cloth diapers and a big family. I've had to replace a few parts in the dryer, but their cheap and easy to diy repair. For washing dirty stuff you want a top loader. I would recommend getting one that has the option for two rinses. A few other tips from someone who has washed a lot of pee out of things....Cotton jammies and sheets can be very helpful. Also don't use detergents with fabric softener or fragrances as they can coat or cling to items. Of the mainstream detergents Tide free and clear gets a lot of love in the cloth diapering community for rinsing out clean. It has been my go to through the diapering and bed wetting years.

Our whirlpool dishwasher quit heating after 17 years. Ge stove is 19, not sure how old our whirlpool fridge is (at least 15), microwave was just replaced last year (basic hamilton beach from walmart). Avoid samsung at all costs, not worth the headaches.

Hope this isn't too late (maybe it will help someone else) but NEVER buy LG or Samsung fridges - we have been told that by two refrigerator repairmen in the past few weeks, while they tried to save our 7 year old LG fridge in vain. It is now a giant hunk of landfill. They recommended Whirlpool, GE - I have heard Bosch is also good.

I work for an appliance part distributor. Kenmore models starting with 111 are Daewoo or Harwick. Models starting with 106 or 110 are Whirlpool. There's an entire list of Kenmore model prefixes. I'm not saying you didn't work for Sears. I am saying that I work for the part distributor Sears buys their parts from.

My Whirlpool French door replaced out top freezer Frigidaire which died very quickly. Have not had any real issues or broken things in the 3 years we have had it so far. My last Whirlpool Side by Side was similarly a great fridge. I am very dubious of GE since they are Chinese owned now and their last decade prior to that was very much downhill for them. I am mixed in my thoughts with their washers. LG unambiguously makes the best on the market but my parents have Whirlpool Duet front load washers from 2007 that have never needed any serving and wash very well, considerably better than either of my condominiums newer Speed Queen front and top loaders. I had LGs in my last home that were great but missing some features compared to the Duets.

Whirlpool is my domestic brand of choice. They aren’t perfect: not the best build quality in the world, not the snazziest features around, but seem to be a good all-rounder and are at least good performers for their intended functions in my experience. Even baking ovens, good cleaning dishwashers, etc. Sometimes I wonder if I made the right choice spending so much on my current Miele when it occurs to me I will be unlikely to be able to repair it on my own.

$5k budget might be kind of tight, but it could possibly be doable. I bought kitchen appliances in 2019 for around $5250 from Best Buy’s kitchen/bath retailer Pacific Sales. The only items I didn’t buy that were floor models were a GE Profile 5 burner cooktop (this was $1100, I think), and GE Profile Microwave and trim kit for about $425. The GE Profile fridge (which I honestly wouldn’t buy again) was $1500, the GE Cafe built in oven (which I adored) was $1800, and the Kitchen Aid dishwasher was $450. I ended up selling the house in 2020. The fridge was really the only disappointment as the water line got clogged and leaked out the bottom fridge because it was cause a layer of ice to form in the bottom freezer (at the time it was a known GE fridge problem with no fix other than to have the line cleaned). In my new house I did have to buy a Whirlpool fridge from Costco and I have been happy with it. It replaced a Kenmore Elite (which was a rebadged LG) with a bad condenser. I won’t buy an LG appliance product. My big kitchen splurge was a Miele dishwasher, I bought the highest home model available that was being discontinued from Pacific Sales for $1500. It is absolutely worth it. I went back there to buy the same or similar Kitchen Aid dishwasher I had in my old house and I hated the new third row set up and Miele’s just worked better. I had a GE Profile traditional in my old house for 14 years before I replaced it (it came with the house so it was closer 16-17 years old really) and honestly it was still working but my kitchen was small and I gained more space by putting in a cook top and a built in oven. I would buy another GE cooking product. I also bought a new GE Profile microwave for my new house.

None. Whirlpool still makes very basic refrigerators with like no features. Freezer on top, fridge on the bottom. I'm pretty sure they're still bulletproof. It's their higher end models that are not so BIFL.

Early 90's Whirlpool dryer. This 29" design is still used today that goes back to 1966. Unless you're trying to find a very specific part like a timer or one of those 2 console switches, everything else is pretty common. Open the door, there should be a model # that starts with 110. You mention the performance sucks. 9.5 times out of 10, the vent is plugged up with lint. These style of dryers are also notorious for plugging up with lint in the filter chute area of the blower, easy fix. Pendleton blanket. Crock pot (basic 4qt), Technivorm Moccamaster, Baratza Encore, two Subarus, two Harleys (big twins), knives, Vitamix blender, Miele vacuum, Whirlpool drier and fridge, and some other stuff (Grundens, Patagonia apparel) , Snap On , Matco tools, etc, which at least (all in this list) are 15 years and older and still standing. Oh, forgot to mention MacBook Pro and iMac Mid 2009 still standing. Bose mini speaker. BUY LESS BUY BETTER!

just to add my 2 cents to the subject. I'm korean and will never buy a LG house appliance ever again.. it took 7 years for my compressor to go out.. which sadly seems a bit longer than other comments I saw here... they did replace the compressor for free since it was within the 10 year warranty period. just not happy about the 350 dollar installation cost. but for sure next time. it's going to be GE, may tag or whirlpool

Of the choices listed I'd go for the LG or the Whirlpool. I'd like to recommend the Frigidaire FFHT2045XS but FYI I had to install a child safety lock on the freezer to prevent it from popping open if someone slammed the fridge door. Good unit otherwise though.

1987 should be a direct drive, which ran until 2011. That pump is still available. Also might be the coupler, also still available. Nothing made today (including Speed Queen) will hold up this well. Fix it!

[Request] Are refurbished used fridges a better investment that buying new? And if so, what should I be looking for?
I have the statistics from 1500+ of my friends that are appliance techs. There is no refrigerator or washer made today that will last as long as they used to. Most top load washers are done at 5-7 years and it depends on the fridge but 10 years at most, 10 minutes on some. On the other hand, we have a 2001 Whirlpool washer & dryer that will probably last another 20-30 years. I gave my neighbor a 1974 dryer that is still running perfect to this day. My friend has a 1958 refrigerator that is till running strong. I sell used appliances and have 4 shops full right now. We remove old appliances all the time... 10-20-40 years old and they have never had a repair. Some still work, some have a problem that may or may not be fixed. I guarantee that not 1 washer or refrigerator that is made in 2025 will be working in 2065 unless it is repaired every few years. Same neighbor from above bought a brand new refrigerator and the compressor was out from the minute they delivered it. My sister-in-law bought a new Bosch dishwasher.... finally the 4th one lasted over a month.

It depends which model Kenmore you have. I had a Kenmore Elite front loader that I bought in 2005 and it was a Frigidaire. The only reason I got rid of it in 2014 was water was starting to leak out the bottom of the front panel. My MIL had a Whirlpool Duet F/L set that is almost 20 years old.

I have a front-load Kenmore which was a Whirlpool Duet. Still running fine 25 years later. Had to replace a panel clip from somebody slamming the door too hard, but that was years ago. Still running strong. Although I will have to open it up at some point to clean some pipes inside.

Is this worth $350 still? Found out I'm gonna need a new one and of course they recommend a $1500 brand (speed queen). My current is a maybe 10 year old kenmore elite and only issue is the bottom is starting to rust out.
If your old Kenmore is a Whirlpool built direct drive, mechanical control machine, it's worth trying to arrest the rust and keep it a few years longer.

Thinking through induction stove and longevity
Induction has been the most common standard in Japan in the last 20 years or so. It’s much more durable than you’d expect. As soon as we got our first house, we replaced the cooktop with induction for safety reasons. The halogen bulbs in the range hood emit more heat than induction cooktop (as soon as it’s turned off). There’s a child lock on it. My entire household has ADHD, I’m not risking a house fire 😅 Get a KitchenAid, GE, or Whirlpool mid-to-high-range model. It’s a joy to use it once you get used to cleaning it.

I would buy this Whirlpool over any other dryer on the market, even over the Speed-Queen dryer. The Whirlpool is super reliable and, if it does break, parts are plentiful and cheap.

Unless the control unit circuit board fries, you can basically repair them yourself for <$50 and they’ll last a lifetime. Washers on the other hand…. Lots more pumps and seals and hoses and gunk. Buy a good one

Ideal to buy a COMMERCIAL grade washing machine / dryer for a home?
Huebsch make very high quality washing machines, I would spend the extra for one of those. As far as dryers, unless you really need the machines to match each other, I would likely get a basic no frills Amana/ Whirlpool dryer, they work just fine... Dryers are simple machines, and spending more on a more expensive dryer doesn't really improve very much in my experience.

LG refrigerators, are they any good?
I bought LG in 2021, and I was told it's compressor issue and since parts under warranty, only LG certified tech can fix. Scheduled appointment through LG website for tech in my area, only to get a call that the tech not available and cost with them is flate rate approx.$500 but other LG certified tech would charger higher. Freezer full of meat melted overnight my freezer looks like bloodbath. Cost of fridge full of groceries plus another 600-700 for fix. Honestly don't know whether to cut my loss and buy new fridge or fix it but I know I'll be stressed about another issue. I wouldn't get LG...my last fridge whirlpool had it for over 13 years and only reason I got rid of it was because I wanted double door fridge with bottom freezer. I really miss my working fridge.

French door (and side by side) is where most of the problems are (with ice dispensers on the front). If you are not particular about the style, you could get a two door (top or bottom freezer) with no dispensers on the door simple fridge. GE/Frigidaire/Whirlpool could work. Pick whichever model provides you the most functions. If you are looking for premium, Miele could fit that price range (Bosch if you are looking for Counter depth). Consumer reports lists LG, Miele, GE for bottom freezer; Wirecutter does almost similar.

You have the Speed Queen TR series, which isn't known for the most effective cleaning. If you had a TC5 you would see it performs much more like the Whirlpool. The direct drive Whirlpool washers are exceptional performers, and the dual action agitator is a very good agitator that has proven itself time and time again. As for your Speed Queen, the problem is the agitator is fixed directly to the wash basket. The two move in unison which is why you're noticing it doesn't clean the clothes like your Whirlpool did.

I judge it by the results, not how the machine works. My front loader gets my clothes cleaner than the old whirlpool agitator type ever did. I would prefer it to use *slightly* more water instead of spending 10 minutes figuring out the absolute minimum amount of water, but regardless, the clothes get clean. If you want a whirlpool agitator, buy an old whirlpool. They will probably last longer than any modern machine, and parts are readily available. For example I just replaced the agitator dogs in one for a friend for $6.

Shockingly it was a Samsung Dishwasher, replaced with a Bosch 800. It’s a Whirlpool Fridge with a regular door, bottom chest drawer freezer. It’s a Kenmore dryer. And we have a Samsung washing machine, top loader, and it’s been a trooper for 8+ years. We got really lucky with the Samsung stuff, I think we just missed out on the really bad motherboards and such being older and pre Covid. But we won’t buy them anymore with all their current issues.

Go to a used appliance store…. Buy an early 2000s direct drive washing machine from Whirlpool, Kenmore (made by Whirlpool), or a Maytag. These machine are based on a timeless design, durable, and very simple to repair. The one I bought will last at least another 15 years…… Whereas the modern electronic version with the mandated “Guberment” efficiency standards may very well last 7 years at most. Manufacturers design these machines last about that long. They also price them so that it’s cheaper to buy new than to repair….. As for my 20 year old “new to me washer” any part I need for it is still readily available from the manufacturer.

I was in the market for a new washer & dryer back in 2008. I asked my friend (an appliance repair technician) what he recommended and he ran with it. Told me to go to the appliance place to pick them up. I had no idea what it was going to be. Bosch? Miele? Store had them set aside for me and I was surprised they were Whirlpool units. I asked the store manager why and he said those units were the last ones he had that were made in Germany. WTF? Never had a problem with them for the 14 years that I owned them. Sold the house and left a note for the new owner. Stopped by recently and they’re still running 100%. I usually ask repair people what to get (or to avoid) and I got to say I’ve had excellent luck.

I was going to suggest the same. If you can find a used appliance place, something from the early 2000s without any circuit boards in it is awesome. Everything just runs off a timer and switches. A store like Trible's will have all the parts and there's videos on YouTube on how to fix anything on them very quickly. They'll usually only have one big knob and a few small knobs up top and look something like this. Ours is also the blue one. No problems so far, and actually really like the detergent reservoir feature (prior to purchase, kinda thought that was gimmicky and unnecessary). Bought ours with an Amex card for the extended warranty coverage. We bought a basic Whirlpool top-loader in 2023 for my wife's house (now a rental). It started having problems last month, two different techs diagnosed a faulty motherboard that would be $300 I'm parts alone (we paid $500 for the machine on sale). Filed an extended warranty claim with Amex and they're paying to replace it.

Absolutely not. As someone who is educated in appliance’s I can say Bosch is the same as everyone else selling dishwashers, they are very computerized and prone to electronic failure. They aren’t what they were 15 years ago unfortunately as Bosch used to be quite reliable of a brand. This writer is looking for something that will actually last without repair for several years and won’t be prone to electronic failure. The only dishwasher in America we still have that meets their criteria is the Whirlpool Powerclean module dishwashers made from 1985-2011 which includes Kenmore Ultrawash dishwashers, Kitchenaids Inglis Estate some Maytags made within that timeframe. They had big induction motors that cleaned and dried dishes within an hour and the latest versions weren’t even very loud with a tuned sound absorber whirlpool installed, they had a truly self cleaning filter module unlike any other dishwasher & they were notoriously reliable. I have two that are still running, they just never give up on their owners and everyone within the appliance enthusiast and experts community will tell you this is the go to machine for strong reliability and high performance. The only shit there is with them is that you can’t buy them new anymore obviously as they were discontinued in 2011 and if you were to have an issue like needing a new rack or a new control panel or motor it can be replaced very easily and there’s so many parts still available for them it’s all about how you go and find a used one you must inspect it & ensure it’s in good condition still as you would buying anything used.

Yes it’s called the Whirlpool Powerclean module dishwasher. Made from 1985-2011. Americas most powerful, notoriously reliable & popular dishwasher in dishwashing history! It was available in all of whirlpools other brands at the time like kitchenaid, Kenmore, estate, inglis. There are used ones that pop up constantly because they were so popular at the time and they are built to last and can clean the rust off a trailer hitch. I have one from 2006 and another one from 2003 that run and run and run and never fails, neither have I had a single issue with them either my 06 even has a control board instead of a timer dial and that hasn’t even failed yet! New dishwashers simply don’t last because of how terribly they are made & all the unnecessary electronics installed into them. Just look up “Whirlpool Powerclean dishwashers Automaticwasher.org” so you can see what they look like so you know what to look for. Find one that’s clean and in great shape. The Kenmore models were called the “Ultrawash” so that’s another way to find one and the Kenmores usually offered more options and features. If you want a dishwasher that will last this is the platform to buy, plus you’ll save so much money going the used route.

Looking for a counter-depth french door fridge with great ice maker
My grandpa ran an appliance repair shop for his whole life, and his go-to brand is Whirlpool. He said they tend to have the best overall quality and warranties, so that's what we got when we updated our 90's kitchen appliances. Funny enough, the dishwasher did have a small electrical issue, but it was the first time I've had an appliance that was under warranty and I was actually able to have it repaired with the warranty! It was so easy to file a claim, too.

Looking for a counter-depth french door fridge with great ice maker
In that budget I’d go KitchenAid (owned by Whirlpool) as they have some nice-sounding variable speed compressor on their “Preserva” equipped models that- in description- keeps more constant humidity since it doesn’t move air between the fridge and freezer. At least based on their promotional material. Their Whirlpool brand ones only have water dispensers on the inside and a more regular temp management system. Those are under 1.5K when you get their discounts. Some -not all- of their fridges have better sealing crisper drawers too. I know where you’re coming from, as most fridges these days barely seal those drawers at all. I won’t own another Electrolux-made fridge after my 2018 top-freezer fridigidare died in less than 4 years.
