How much do you want to spend? There are only a few real options. The first big two for work boots would be Whites and Nicks. The boots are fully repairable and no other service or work boots compare. But they will be $$$$$

I have whites millwright boots. They are the best boots I've ever worn. 4 years old now. Not sure about ten, that will depend on the type of work you do. My next pair will be nicks builder pro.

Thursdays aren’t buy it for life but they are decent entry level boots if you like the look of them they are ok. If you wanted something better look at parkhurst, grant stone, whites, caswell, and nicks all are more of a buy it for life type boot

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
A large portion of Redwing are now made overseas and nothing but junk. Traditional US brands like Whites, Nick's, and Frank's are far better in terms of construction. Truly BIFL.

Stuff you will continue buying for life
Red Wing Heritage line, sadly their work line has gone far downhill. I wore 2216s for years and my most recent pair had the heel cup separate after a rather short time. They wouldn't do anything about it and it couldn't be repaired. Thorogoods weren't any better - their steel toe plastic support cracked after just over a year and caved into the boot. Check out my post history for both of these. Now onto Jim Greens. Options for lighter weight safety toe BIFL boots are slim. The PNW bootmakers (Nicks, Whites, JK) are all very good but far too heavy duty, hot, and overkill in design for indoor work on cement.

This is true, but the price tag is pretty intimidating for someone’s first pair of good boots. I love my Whites, and they’re absolutely BIFL boots, but I had to start with Red Wings.

Goth/Punk-style combat boot recommendations?
I was really interested in Solovair. Tried them out. Not great for wide sizing (if you need wides). Customer service was also an absolute nightmare when it came to returning them. I saw Nick’s / Whites mentioned in the comments. Can’t speak on Nick’s—never had them. I have a pair of Whites 8” Perry (probably not what you’re looking for). They are nice and thick (and can be resoled) Maybe check out [Jim Green](https://jimgreenfootwear.com/product-category/african-ranger/). Their AR8 or their RATs might be up your alley. I picked up a pair of the RATs in brown. Absolutely excellent boots. Leather all around. Stitch down, so they can be resoled. Little pricey, but…$300 and some care—you’ll have them for a long time.

Look at brands like Nick's, whites, franks, Wesco, viberg, John lofgren, Eastman. These boots will last you a few years before a resole is needed, and depending on how tough you are, maybe even 7-10 years before a rebuild is necessary. If it's light work, these boots are absolute tanks and will outlast any boot on the market. They make redwings look and feel like child play boots

For regular sizing id recommend Red Wing especially on discount. Extended width sizing like myself I've liked Grant Stone or jump up to see if Whites has anything at a comparable price to the Red Wings (on sale maybe?). The price you listed seems a bit expensive for the blacksmith but maybe Red wing raised prices.

If you're willing to pay top dollar, Nick's, Whites, Frank's, Wesco, and other PNW bootmakers make top-tier, custom, handmade boots. r/pnwbootmakers If you don't want to pay that much, Red Wing makes good boots in the $300 range depending on what you want.

Definitely no where close to buy it for life. You'll be lucky to get more than a year out of them. There is no such thing as a buyer for life boot. The closest thing you'll ever find are going to be Pacific Northwest foods like Nick's whites Wesco JK, Frank's. Those are in the $4-800 range. Then there's the likes of viberg, John lofgren, and the Japanese that get in the 2k range

Not a woman but I bought my wife a pair of boots from Nicks. They are expensive and they have a break in period, but any boot worth having will require break in. You don’t want the “cloud” feeling. Your foot needs a firm surface that molds to your foot to provide support and also has enough space to flex naturally. The PNW brands like Nicks, Franks, and whites are top of the line. It’s an investment for sure

This is the answer. Older Allen Edmonds, Alden for dressier shoes or boots. PNW brands like Whites or Nicks for more serious work style boots. Vintage cowboy boots before things went to crap in the 90’s.

You obviously don’t work on your feet. I’ll basically pay any amount of money I have to in order to have happy feet after 9 hours of standing. You are soooo much better off paying a few hundred bucks for real shoes than a cheap pair of shoes where your feet are screaming every second you’re at work. Pass. Buy redwings, buy whites, buy Birkenstocks, buy Mephistos, buy something good, you’re going to be wearing them a lot, might as well be comfortable.

Buy Once Cry Once items?
Never in their wildest dreams…. Until you do. Then give it five years and tell me how many pairs you have in your closet. If you don’t know, you just don’t know. I used to only be able to afford a couple hundred for boots. But I grew so sick of spending 2-400 a year on boots that would disintegrate, or destroy my feet. I get all my pnw boots off eBay. I had severe plantar fasciitis and got a pair of nicks builder pros, and it was an absolute game changer. My feet have NEVER been healthier. Then I got another pair of nicks, then a pair of whites, then a pair of wesco. The whites and nicks I never spent more than $450 on eBay. All practically brand new. The Wesco boots are engineers, and I cringed when I bought them but I had to have them. $875😂 when you know you know.

[BIFL request] Red wing boots alternative
I was a wildland firefighter for years. 100+ hour weeks in the woods, often stepping in ash and dirt. Red Wings were generally considered low quality; Whites were the top of the line. Expensive but high quality, made in the US, and easy to repair. Because of the price, however, I wouldn't recommend them unless you're planning on using them heavily.
