Smartwool or Darn Tough or other?
I had such a bad experience with Smartwool that today I typed "Smartwool is Dumbwool" into Firefox just to see what came up. . It is the only time in my life I actually darned socks. They got holes unacceptably soon, and often -- I kept re-darning the new holes. Never again! I finally made up my own joke about Smartwool: I stopped darning them and settled for damning them. I had a pair of Wigwams that lasted me 20 years. Worn, not stored. I've worn Thorlos (various pairs) since the 90s. Half a dozen pairs of Darn Tough. All Made in USA.

\- **Bag:** Timbuk2 Classic Messenger bag. I've had mine for 6 years used as a full-time commute/computer bag, occasional range bag, then as a diaper bag for a few years, then as my fishing bag most recently. The only issue I've had is a broken buckle but that was my fault closing it in a car door. **- Multi-tool:** Leatherman multi-tools: My dad had the same one 20+ years before he died. I've been using a Free p4 model for 4ish years with no issues through a lot of both hard use and daily use type tasks, and very little care (re-tightened screws twice and apply a little oil occasionally). **- Knife:** Essee Izula 2, affordable, great lifetime warranty, small enough to EDC and for delicate tasks, tough enough to baton wood, the blade shape and size make it very versatile. Does require basic care (dry and oil) and you may not like the sheath that comes with it. **- Wool blend Socks:** My smart wools have lasted me like 5 years, my wigwams are my most comfortable, my darn toughs are also great. **- Good underwear:** My ExOfficios have lasted seemingly forever. I've been married 9 years today and I'm pretty sure a few of the sadder pairs in my dresser are almost that old. Saxx are incredibly comfy but don't last. **- Light Jacket:** I've had a Patagonia Jacket since 2009 that is one of my more used jackets, patagonia repaired the main zipper two years ago for free/cheap. Jack Wolfskin wind shirt/jacket, also had since 2009 and it's been pretty brutally treated through Military stuff, backpacking, a short stint doing heavy pipefitting, and a lot of hunting/fishing. I've literally just partially retired it in the last few weeks for a Helikon-Tex Woodsman Anorak, I'll still keep the wolfskin for a farm work layer until it completely dies. **- Wallet:** I've had a Rogue Industries front pocket wallet as my only wallet since 2015, the only reason I need to replace it after 10 years is because I got the nylon one instead of the leather, pretty sure the leather would last at least 15-20 years. **- Water bottles/thermos:** Classic Nalgene bottles are very rugged and last forever. Classic Stanley thermos, it will take a house fire to kill it. My insulated Kleen Kanteen has also taken tremendous abuse and clumsiness.

This is the only correct answer if in the US. I've replaced all my socks with them after the spouse introduced me to them, I had previously been wearing wigwam socks but these are better.

I’d pay attention to materials. Darn Tough are a wool/nylon blend, not all wool like Bombas. Other brands like Wigwam that have some nylon in them should also last longer than Bombas

I did the same as you...fell in love with the feeling & look of the merino Bombas at a local store, bought several pairs, they ALL developed holes in the toes and heels within 2-3 months of being worn IN ROTATION with my other brands of merino and alpaca socks. I contacted Bombas for replacement for the first pair; they didn't make it very easy AT ALL, but I did eventually get some credit on their site. After ALL the other pairs developed holes so quickly, I swore off buying Bombas. For the record, I do NOT wear socks without shoes, I don't wear socks to bed, I don't have long toenails or tight/rubbing shoes, and I rotate my sneakers every day. I have Smartwool socks that are TEN years old, with no holes. (Most of my Smartwools are 5-6 years old and look GREAT.) I also have Darn Tough socks, but like you OP I don't prefer them as they shrink TERRIBLY in the normal wash and are now tighter/shorter and thicker and uncomfortable to wear. \*\*\*Worth nothing about Darn Tough: I gift pairs of them to my Dad, he has had no problems. I am female and usually buy the femme looking designs and THOSE are what I've had issues with. The standard black/gray tall crew socks I get my dad don't seem to have the shrinking issue BUT I think my parents wash their laundry in cold. I have had one pair of Wigwams I owned for a couple of years, they got appropriated by my SO who has now had them for about 3 years now, still going strong NO HOLES. He wears them in steel toed boots.

Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
Controversial, but Darn Tough Socks. I bought sone a few years back directly from their website. They srarted stringing quite badly early on. Some came with tiny holes that thankfully haven't spread. And one recently tore at a seam when I was putting it on as normal. So I suspect others will soon too. I understand I can send them back and get new ones, but BIFL should mean longevity of the product itself. Not lifetime returns. By contrast I had two pairs of Wigwam wool socks I used quite often from 2010 that only started to wear thin enough to get holes last year. I don't expect any true BIFL socks, but the Darn Toughs were already damaged out of the box. Unless they've fixed this quality issue since I bought them. When I have a few socks damaged I might send them in. I will say they are higher quality still than whatever socks I got from Walmart in the past.

Bombas Socks are not BIFL quality
Darn Tough socks fit my feet...weirdly so I donated them. My closest to BIFL are my Wigwams, Smart Wools, and American Trench wool/silk blends. All made in the USA.

I have personal experience with Icebreaker and Point6. I would like to try Wigwam as a lot of people like them and they have a cool looking wool/silk blend I'd like to try, but a person can only have so many socks lol.

I have a similar experience with Smartwool. And I have way too many pairs from the promos on their website... But it's not worth it. I have Wigwam, Darn Tough, Fox River, Point 6, etc... All are in pretty good shape but I only have problems with Smartwool.

I’m increasingly of the opinion that merino wool socks are a scam. Sure they are moisture wicking, but moths eat them alive. Well.. dead. All my wool socks have holes. My 20 year old polyester thorlos and wigwams? Good as new. Make yer choices

I may have a bit of an obsession. And I cant even find my dark green full cushion boot hikers!
If you bought them all at once then yes maybe an obsession. I have at least that many pairs of Smart Wools and Wigwams. That is about the only thing I ever ask for at Christmas time for the last 4 years. As a bachelor I enjoy having enough socks to be able to not do laundry every week. Also in the Winter I often double them up.
