Best FIRM mattress options
I’ve seen people swear by Saatva Classic (firm), WinkBed (firm), or Helix Dusk Luxe for back and hip support.

A good mattress, do they exist anymore?
We bought a Winkbed after a lot of research and after 4 years it doesn't sag AT ALL. I am actually shocked because every bed I've ever had did sag. It took probably a month to get used to, but now it's my favorite bed I've ever owned.

The Best Mattresses Now?
If you're over 40 I would never buy a bed in a box. I never will again. My Casper is 7 years old and I got a Saatva mattress topper last year but even that hasn't made it a good bed. I'm going to get a Wink. That's what wirecutter recommends for 1500. If you can spend 2500 there are a better beds but I cant/wont.

Best mattress in a box advice needed - which ones actually hold up over time?
Yuuup. My rationale was to have a firm mattress that would hold up well over time and just add a softer topper that we can replace as needed. The winkbed firm has been good for us

Your rationale is exactly why I purchased a Winkbed Plus made for those over 300 lbs. I'm not that big but I got tired of beds cratering -- pisses me off so I went with an overbuilt bed. If you go that route, however, know that they are less forgiving for light folk. If you're a side sleeper, you'd need a 3 inch topper. If you're a back sleeper, you'll likely love it as is. Has a pretty nice cushion top but not enough for a side sleeper. I've been on mine for 3 years now and there is no cratering whatsoever. Very robust.
