Chippewa no longer really makes any heritage stuff and has had a drop in quality. No idea who makes LL bean but they still say Goodyear welted but for 200 probably not great. Other brands worth looking at Red Wing (300+, unless you wait for Seconds) Wolverine (notch below, do not pay more than 200-250 for 1000 miles) Thursday (200 and probably close or maybe a bit better than that Bean) Urban Wolf Club (170, better than thursday but long wait times) After than you satrt getting into Grant Stone, AE, etc and north of 500 bucks

Boots that will last
Yeah I have worn wolverine’s for the past 3 years there’s good but for me the toe outersole always splits at the tip of the toe (This has happened regardless of brand for me mainly from a lot of kicking stuff around at work or extreme heats on the bottom of the boots) but otherwise there are pretty comfortable I do have a insert(80$-100$ Aetrex the insert had lasted 3-4 years over meny boots best insert you can get in my opinion for any shoes or boots) in them as far as lasting you might get 6 months to a year I’ve had varying degrees of longevity but I have been buying the exact same pair for the past 6 years I think I have bought roughly a pair a year to 2 a year depends on how hard I am on them. (I’m as hard as you can possibly be on them because of area of work)

Blundstone is one of the enshittified brands. When i moved to Toronto in 2017 everyone told me not to buy them because they’re not made the same an instead to invest in a good pair of sorrels or wolverines. I have both sorrel and wolverines and i have no regrets. They’re amazing shoes. I even have a couple pairs of steel toed timberlands that are still kicking.

Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?
As I write this, I'm wearing my Wolverine boots (12 years old), Kuhl pants (11 years), Irish wool sweater (21 years), and Barbour jacket (41 years), and Omega watch (21 years). BIFL is real. It does come at the cost of choosing a style and sticking with it. Easier for a man, but doable regardless.

Shovel Recommendations? So sick of breaking shovels.
I'm curious to explore the gender dynamics in this. I am a woman, been gardening as a professional for over 5 years, i.e, digging giant holes for trees, excavating whole yards by hand. I've never broken a shovel. Neither have most of my female gardening friends. I get this feeling when I am asking too much of the tool, usually trying to use it as a lever, or using a pruner when I should be using a lopper, that the tool is going to say NOPE, and I stop. On the other hand, I've worked with a lot of guys who go through shovels like I go through tampons :). These guys range across a spectrum of all different strengths and mentalities. I'm sure that none of them set out to break tools. I certainly don't have the arm strength that they do, but I wonder if it's just being more cautious. Or maybe I just have a cosmic connection with the mind of that particular tool, knowing what it wants : ). Call me the tool whisperer. Hahaha. My two cents on shovels, we find the Garant Pro to be pretty good in terms of price point and durability. Wolverines are pretty unbreakable but heavy AF and go for almost 250-300$. You can use them to lift up those steel plates they put on roads when they are doing repairs. Here's a link to the Garant. Longest lasting video game controllers?
Normally I’d agree, the gaming chairs and LED headsets are overpriced junk usually. I’ve had friends who have very positive experiences with their Wolverine pro line of controllers though. Expensive as hell, and like I mentioned, not BIFL because no controller is, but it should last exponentially longer than the first party Xbox controllers based on my personal experience.

Redwing and Wolverine 1000 mile boots. I have some pairs coming up on ten years. Just resole when needed. If you find out your size you can get them on eBay second hand. Most of my pairs I got for less then $100 usd lightly used. People get inpatient and don’t want to break them in.

Old post, but I'm throwing in my experience. I have owned 2 pairs. My first were a pair of Raider Dura-Shock pull-ons. The soles at the toes separated within 6 months. A hundred bucks gone. Fast forward, I bought a pair in a buy 1 pair get on. So, I bought some nice Justin's and grabbed a pair of soft toe Rancher Pull Tabs a couple of months ago. They are comfortable boots, but pieces of the soles are beginning to come off. Mind you, I wear these boots as a pair of kick around boots. But I am not hard on them. I have old military boots for that. Either my expectations are set too high for a $100-150 pair of boots, or I haven't learned my listen yet.

Viberg and oak Street boot makers are both good well known brands. Hmm osb (oak Street) Are made foreign I'm not sure where, but the 3 pair I have are super well made and I've had 2 for over a decade. Viberg is canadian Allen Edmond and wolverine make the boot, not sure where Alden also makes great boots similar in Massachusetts, I have a pair of their shell Cordovan that are fantastic

Uniqlo basic tees and their selvage jeans are good everything else is sub par quality. Muji has better quality shirts. Charhartt wip are pricey but worth it. Work boots. If you can afford redwings those are amazing. If you cant, wolverines are good intro boots. Ive had a pair for 10 years and counting ive only had them repaired once. Watch I chose a seiko automatic not too expensive but reliable easy to maintain and relatively stylish. As someone that walks as a main mode of transportation there are NO BIFL sneakers/shoes so buy whatevers comfortable and just trust that youll need to replace them after a year (or 2 max) and since everyones foot is different youll need to find a shoe that you have tried before buying. Rain coat columbia is the best IMO. North face is literally the heaviest out of the rest. Patagonia is OK but theres something about it im not comfortable with. Backpack. Waxed canvas. Just remember to check the wax on it regularly. No specific brand in mind its more of the upkeep I have literally 20+ different insulated tumblers ive only used 2 on a daily basis. One is a standard 22oz silver one with no paint coating. Its all beat up but it has character and since it doesnt have paint my ocd doesnt get triggered. The second one is an old hydroflask back when they were just starting and not a money grab company they are now. Its an open top cap one for coffee. Lunch box, zojirushi lunch jar. Yes this is pricy but as someone who is well in his 30s and brings lunch to work this is awesome cause it keeps food hot for 8hrs (warm till 12hrs) ive had mine since college. This thing is pretty indestructible im pretty sure it would out live me. Also since im also part asian zojirushi rice cookers are built to be handed down generationally. Right now im out of what else to recommend but let me know if youre looking for a specific item ill let you know my thoughts on it. Yeah other people would recommend the best most expensive but on an actual practical level im a pretty safe bet to ask.

+1 r/goodyearwelt You prob want redwing iron rangers (10y+ on mine, amazing) or wolverine 1000 miles (it was between these and the rangers for me). Allen Edmonds is a slightly more formal looking brand, and usually runs more expensive, but they have factory seconds for cheaper and those go on sale sometimes. Getting your size takes patience, but I got a $500 pair for $200. Idk what women's options these brands have, but they're usually pretty clear that they recommend just getting the narrower size of the unisex styles. Thursday is cheaper and fine but you really get what you pay for on boots. You'll be happier longer with the good stuff.

I had a pair of Wolverine epx boots. I got just about 1.5yr out of them and they were pretty comfy the whole time. Threw them out once the leather split open on the instep cuz my feet would get soaked as soon as the grass had dew. I wore them for wildlife field work: long hikes, rocky terrain, wet/muddy areas, snow, heat, you name it. I haven’t heard many good things about CAT from coworkers. Definitely just a company using their name to sell products they have no history in making. Carhartt footwear is along that same vein IMO. I’d buy another pair but decided to try a pair Carolina loggers out this time.

My back pain flares up when I wear the wolverines and none of my other boots do. Trying some different insoles. Other than that, wolverines has great construction and feels high quality, however not much arch support. Made in Michigan is a bonus.

I have a very similar model, if not the same, of those wolverines. I've had them for about six months and I really like them. I use them as work boots, but I originally got them as motorcycle boots, so mine don't have the steel toe, but they did survive a motorcycle crash and I'm still using them. I did have to replace the laces tho. However beyond 6 months or so I can't speak for their longevity, just their comfort, which isn't bad.

I had the CAT ones years ago. I worked at a dog daycare and I actually really liked them. Wore them everyday and I was walking around like crazy. I think I left them at my parents and they got rid of them during the move. Right now, I have DeWalt boots but only because they were on sale. They are okay, but I like the cat ones better because there are two speed loops for the laces. The ones I have no only have one and it’s hard to take on and off. Also, I posted a similar question about boots on here a few weeks ago. A lot of people mentioned a lot of different brands but a lot said wolverine.

I had this style of Wolverine boot for probably 3-4 years. I did a lot of roofing, flooring, outdoor work. I also hiked with them, which I probably shouldn't have. They stopped being waterproof a few months ago because the sole separated, but overall, I they're pretty solid. I just hope your feet aren't as wide as mine, since the width is my only real complaint. Make sure if you get them, you buy leather conditioner and take care of them well. Don't kick your boots off with your other boot. Undo the laces all the way and slide them off nicely. They'll probably last a longer than mine did.

Pool guy here. Not sure there is a real BIFL option for what you're looking for. Waterproof, workboot, and longlasting don't really go together. I had good luck buying Wolverine (just looked at the tag) W10653s for 3 rotations. The waterproofing last you 9 months if you're relatively gentle on them, but they seem to be about triple the price of those you posted. The only CAT boots I've bought had their waterproofing give out in 3 months, but I was being rough on them, and didn't buy them again. Not great sample size, but I'd splurge again on the Wolverines. Light and tight.

Wolverine 1000 Mile Boots. The first pair I bought were a step down from the 1000 mile, and they didn't have Goodyear welt soles. They lasted 10 years on the same sole. My new 1000 Mile boots have a fully replaceable sole, and with a modicum of care they will easily last my lifetime.

What's the oldest item you still use daily that has withstood the test of time, and what's its story?
Cast iron pans from my great great grandparents. A North Face jacket I bought in 2008 still looks new. My 1974 Jeep CJ5 (used daily in the fact that I’m still rebuilding it). My Wolverine 1,000 Mile boots recently made it 11 years before being replaced and worn almost daily. Dad’s Realistic steeeo amp / speakers from the late ‘70’s.

Best work boots I have ever owned were a pair of Wolverines. They were very comfortable and lasted for years before I needed to get a new pair. I also had issues with boots wearing out on the steel toe area but never had an issue with these.

Rain boots?
I wouldn't consider Muck Boots bifl, but if you're just using them to walk around in they are probably fine. They are great other than their durability, but that's for daily use on a farm in all sorts conditions. Usually more cost effective to just buy the rubber calf slappers that last just as long for a quarter of the price and throw insoles in them. CE Schmidt might be worth looking into, but I can't speak for them personally. Wolverines are usually solid as well.
