  Wool winter jackets. What are the thoughts?

  Oilskin canvas outer jacket, heavy wool jacket underneath. Wool is not waterproof, nor wind proof, and it gets caught in branches. Waxed or oiled canvas coat fixes all that: tough, waterproof and wind proof. I like drizabone for affordable duster still coats and vintage wool jackets from woolrich or Pendleton.

  Why is it so hard to find well-made clothes that aren't insanely priced?

  I agree with you OP. I also agree with all the people explaining why handmade things are so expensive. I do wish the commonly available options, from popular or common brands, were still decent quality, and not made of plastic and purposely designed to fall apart in a year or two. It can definitely be hard to find middle of the road options, between the $30 pants that need to be replaced every year, and the $200 dollar hand made in Japan options. I find a lot of times paying $75 for something I'm still unsure if it'll fall apart in 2 years anyway. The best solution I've found is used or vintage. A lot of old made in America stuff was fairly impressive, and can be bought fairly affordable. I love wool, so the first examples I can think of are Patagonia, LL Bean, Pendleton, Carhartt, Woolrich, Johnson Woolen Mills, Filson, but there's a lot of others. I've found I can often find vintage clothes, that look like they were hardly worn, for $20-$100 dollars and wear it for ever. I think companies like this are proof that it is possible to make clothes for the masses that last 30 years. Companies now just choose not to. I guess the answer you're looking for, OP, is greed and capitalism. :)

  What Winterjacket should I buy?

  My woolrich has lasted 10 years at this point. 7 years of regular fall/winter use since it was my only warm jacket. With age the only issue has become uneven shading of the color. Also got a Canada Goose, wouldnt recommend. The jacket is fine, lasting well. However, since I bought it the zipper keeps snagging the material underneath the zipper. Not happy

  Everyone will tell you Canada Goose, and they are correct, but any high quality down filled parka will be the same.   Woolrich.  North Face.  Fjallraven.  Rab. Jack Wolfskin.  Patagonia  Many many others. Canada Goose and Woolrich will set you back big bucks...well North of 1k. The others will be slightly less, but still pricey.

  Is it worth buying Woolrich in 2025?

  The Hybrid Jacket is definitely one of Woolrich’s better modern pieces — premium down, great stitching, and the matte nylon feels solid. Just keep in mind it’s more of a fashion-luxury jacket now rather than true outdoor gear. The knit sleeves make it less windproof, but for city use it’s perfect.But style-wise, this Woolrich looks great and ages nicely.

  Yeah, their quality has been great in the past along with Filson and Woodrich. I just haven’t bought anything new from them lately so I’d recommend OP research people with new purchases before dropping the considerable money on anything.

  I haven’t purchased any wool clothing in a long time so I’m hesitant to recommend any. I’ve got some older [Filson](https://www.filson.com/collections/outerwear) and [Woolrich](https://www.woolrich.com/us/en/) that have been great. I have more recently purchased blankets and throws from [Fairbault Mills](https://www.faribaultmill.com/collections/apparel?page=1). Their apparel section is limited but I’ve been really happy with their products. Another option is [Pendleton](https://www.pendleton-usa.com). Again, I can’t personally vouch for their products since I don’t own any but they’re been around for a hundred years so hopefully they’re doing something right.

  I picked up a heavy Woolrich overshirt 25 years ago. It's dense and thick. It's been washed many, many times and I've yet to find any modern fabric that comes close to that amount of warmth, breathability and durability at the same weight. I often just wear it under a rain shell and it's super cozy.

  Those older wool coats are hard to beat. Surplus Pea coats, or those heavy Woolrich wool coats can be found in very good shape. They were made of a heavier wool than you can easily buy now. Pretty close to BIFL as far as coats go. Plus they look pretty sharp in my opinion.

  Lodge cast iron, but one of my Dutch ovens has a Crack. Og brown label North Face down jackets. Leatherman, Swiss Army knives.  Sorel boots. Craftsman hand tools. Pendleton shirts. Woolrich esp. Vintage. I have had great experience with Eureka tents. Sportif hard shell Goretex jacket for years and years, just one sewing repair on a torn pocket edge.

  Woolrich halibut jacket. They recently stopped making them but they are the animist amazing. Chop wood, fish in the rain, whatever. It will last your life and it will regulate your temperature. Nothing compares. Grew up fishing and building trails.

  BIFL, but also BISecondhand. What are some things that everyone should keep an eye out for, but can commonly be found for cheap when preowned.

  I’ve been very lucky the past two years with coming across some good men’s clothes, especially at one new store. L L Bean, Eddie Bauer, Woolrich, Pendleton, Lands End, etc. I’ve even found some Reyn Spooner Hawaiian shirts that go for $70 new. I think the most I’ve paid was a jacket for $15. I’ve even found some good stuff at Goodwill but it’s few and far between. Ya just gotta look.

  Any clue what this is?

  It's a Woolrich shirt or overshirt of some kind. The wool/nylon blend and how thick the fabric is tells me it's probably meant as an overshirt rather than something you wear as your sole top layer. That specific tag was used from the 70's until the mid-90's, so it's a minimum of 30 years old by this point. Nice find!

  I don't have a definitive answer, but will share that I had a similar wool shirt from Woolrich. It was my fathers, and I suspect it was from the '50's. (I'm old). Sadly, I shrunk it through inexperienced washing. I gave it to one of my daughters, who it fit well.

  I work at a thrift store, Woolrich flannels are gold we always look out for, I haven’t seen one that isn’t 100% cotton before, but I’m sure even the synthetic blend will last until the end of days.

  Warmest, most durable parka?

  Woolrich, the oldest arctic parka I have is fifteen years old and has shed its first down feather this winter. My husband has a newer one that’s seven or eight years old and slightly better made, and it looks like new. They’re rated to -30C, which should do the trick unless you live in rural Canada. You can of course go for Golden Goose if you want that silly little patch, but they’re no better or worse.

  The Woolrich recommendation is pretty good. You can also check out Fairbault Mills for something around your price range. However, wool (especially in the more affordable range) isn't very soft at the start, and not everyone likes it. Unfortunately, other materials either aren't as warm, or aren't as long-lasting. And this is r/bifl.
