  Fibre content matters more than anything, so start there. Go for high merino wool or long staple cotton with just a touch of elastane, because anything mostly sythetic will trap odour quickly and feel unpleasant before long. Flatlock seams are worth seeking out since they sit smoothly under a sweater. Single jersey is usually the safer knit because it has stretch without turning the shirt into compression gear... though some shops market it oddly and it can be hard to find exactly what you want Woolx Mia and Icebreaker Siren pieces usually line up with what you're after, and for cotton the older Uniqlo U long sleeve tees using long staple cotton were solid if you can still track them down. Raglan sleeves are useful because they stop the shoulder seams biting under wool layers and they move more comfortably. If fuzz irritates your skin, superfine merino in the 17 to 18 micron range tends to feel smoother than cheaper cotton and it feels more breathable and soft and comfortable and light all at once making it easier to wear under knits.

  Thank you for taking time to share your expertise in such a thorough response! I didn’t know that there was such an important difference between treated and untreated wool, but it makes sense. I will definitely take a trip to REI to see if my skin plays nicely with superwash wool. The Stella leggings look durable enough for a bike and sleek enough to wear under a dress at work! Plus, it looks like both Woolx and Wool& have very reasonable return policies, so I wouldn’t be taking too much of a risk!

  I knit and mostly use animal fibers, primarily wool. I know a lot of other knitters and allergies to wool are not uncommon. If you have trouble with cashmere, you will probably also have trouble with mohair (goat). Alpaca is more tolerable for a lot of people as other comments have mentioned, so that’s a good idea to check out. If merino from J. Crew type shops bothers you, check the washing instructions on the sweater. You might be sensitive to all wool, or only untreated/non-“superwash” wool. If you can machine wash it like most Smartwool items and wool socks, you may not find it so irritating. This doesn’t mean “dry clean only” on a sweater will rule it out for you necessarily (I typically ignore that and hand wash regardless-but rougher wool doesn’t bother my skin) but it might make it easier to find some starter pieces that will not bother you and will be easy care. Superwash wool is processed so it can be machine washed without it felting, which also makes it more tolerable for people with wool sensitivities (not 100% of the time but it’s pretty common). There are trade offs-superwash wool doesn’t behave totally the same as untreated wool, the processing of wool into superwash does involve plastic-but for incorporating natural fibers into your wardrobe as someone with skin sensitivities, it might be an easier option. If you check out brands that do more athletic or outerwear wool items like Smartwool, Darn Tough socks, Meriwool, you may have better luck because those types of companies typically use superwash wool to make things easier to launder. REI has a lot of that kind of thing in the US, and other sporting goods stores. Since you shared women’s wear links, I personally really like Wool& for dresses (Maggie t-shirt dress is my fave) and WoolX for thick leggings (“Stella” for MN winters) and tops (long sleeve, short sleeve, some pullover and hoodie options). Wool& and WoolX are easy care/superwash wool, but I don’t think you would be able to go try things on at a store from either of those companies. I wear Wool& dresses year round and lighter weight leggings when it’s not frigid. They wash well, breathe, and hold up long term nicely, I have had several for 6-7 years that still look great.

  Tiny space heater in bathroom, Haflinger wool clog slippers, WoolX merino wool leggings (my GOD), unscented candles in kitchen and living room, beautiful handmade pottery mugs are my winter joy machines.

  I mostly wear wool with the addition of linen in the summers and denim year round. Simply Merino, Wool&, and WoolX are companies I’ve shopped with repeatedly.

  WoolX holds up really well, I love their stuff. As far as other natural fibers, linen is choice for summer, and cotton gauze as well. I find both hold u for years personally. No brand in particular. If you are shopping for femme clothing, [Texture clothing](https://www.textureclothing.com/) has great hemp and cotton clothes, last ages.

  The Sad Decline of ExOfficio, a Once-great Travel Clothing Brand

  Well tbh I’ve ditched Ex-Officio and ditching plastic panties (and clothing!) after reading about microplastics. I’m now a fan of Woolly boy shorts (95% Merino) and Menique (100% Merino). You need to look after them a little bit more but it’s worth it.

  Recommendations for SOFT wool blankets, please.

  I know this is an old thread but I want to chime in that there are a few companies making washable, surprisingly sturdy and incredibly soft merino now. Wool& is run by a descendant of the Pendleton family. Wool&, wool, and wooly brands are all great. I currently have a woolx blanket on my couch that is amazing. I think the blankets tend to be a seasonal thing but check them out. Also look out for sales.
