  Best thing to buy for $100

  consistency and repeatability without having skills. That's the value of the worksharp tooling buildout for knives. I agree - they are the best in class at the peasant tier. $60 ish dollars for a basically world class sharpening experience, sure it's made of plastic but the engineering was very very well thought out. also. it's like a cinnabon. I can't make a better cinnamon roll than they can, and it takes me three hours to do it. So I buy this peasant tier version, and it's legit world class...

  Best thing to buy for $100

  I think you’re either unfamiliar or underselling how good a worksharp or the Ken Onion powered one can be. I have stones. I tried to make them work. They’re too slow and inconsistent for me and I have multiple types of blades I like to sharpen to different angles, which complicates the mess. My Ken onion gets things sharper, does it in like 1/4 the time, and I can set whatever angle I want. Stone purists are snobs.

  Best thing to buy for $100

  One thing you could do instead is buy something where the $100 gets you in to the “bifl” tier. Something like the mechanical precision adjust worksharp knife sharpener would be a good example. Much much better than a cheapo pull-through sharpener and should last forever. I get a ~$200 uniform allowance with my job and next year I’m going to buy a pair of ~$350 boots. I’d never go much beyond $150 anyways, so the allowance gets me into primo tier that should hopefully get me a few more seasons of wear than my typical boots.

  Any knife sharpener suggestions under $100? Just want the best budget knife sharpener for basic kitchen and EDC knife sharpening. Preferably simpler to use than something you have to look up tutorials to learn. (Wife prefers the simpler things)

  Usually I’d recommend the lansky system cuz it's real good for the price and gives decent results. But the thing is, it takes a bit of setup and the sharpening process is super slow and manual, not ideal for an EDC knife. So lately i think a better option in the same budget is[ this work sharp one](https://recommendedstuff.com/dp-B08VD8ZGFZ). You can skip all the manual fuss cuz it’s electric and doesn't need much figuring out. Also its got the flexible belt system which adapts well to quite a few different blade shapes, even scissors or garden tools. Tip: don’t press too hard, let the belt do the work[.](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08VD8ZGFZ) Light and consistent passes give a sharper edge and keep the belt lasting longer.

  Ever Bought Something That Quietly Changed You?

  On the opposite end of things I have a Japanese knife with a carbon steel edge (it will rust) and the worksharp field sharpener. That knife stays literally shaving sharp most of the time and for the households with no sharp knives you are missing out big time.

  I would not spend the money on Shun. I would get Global or Mercer or one of the German bands if you want to splurge. Also the sharpening kit from worksharp is way more user friendly for first timers. I disagree with the safety razor too. There are a few I would rather use instead. Like a vintage superspeed. There are things I do agree with, like rice cookers, moccamaster, printers, cast iron and bookbags. I think the article makes commissions when you click on the link so some of the best BIFL items are not included since they don't have commission or are in the used category.

  Keep your Walmart set of knives, buy yourself a sharpen like this [work sharp](https://www.amazon.com/Work-Sharp-Precision-Adjust-Sharpener/dp/B08L72P245). You will mess up the Walmart knife the first few times you sharpen them. After you get your sharpening skills, buy yourself a good set of knives. P.S. the main difference between Walmart Knives vs "Good" knives is the duration between sharpening. My
