Not sure if it’s still the case, but Wyze cameras had an SD card slot that could loop and overwrite itself, and you could view the past 24 hours or so for free off the SD card

What are you running? I have Wyze, Tapo and Eufy, and none have subscriptions. All of them have microsd cards with continuous recording, except the battery cams don't have continuous recording. The downside to not having a subscription for the Wyze cams is that the cloud video is short and there's a gap between those videos, and I think it's the same for the other brands. That's not a big deal for me because I can view the continuous video on the microsd card from the app to see everything. I suppose another downside could be that if someone broke into the house they could also take the memory cards, but that's a risk I'm willing to accept. Some brands have a hub that can hold the videos, and the hub can be stored in a more secure location, so that's an option if I want to mitigate the stolen memory card risk.

I have Wyze cameras which can record to an SD card. But I haven't bothered setting it up because the motion detection only notifies me about cars driving past my house (I live on a corner). But I picked these cameras at my brother's recommendation for one that doesn't require a subscription.

I have 4 WYZE cameras and three of them are on the plan I pay yearly for the cloud and the fourth one I don't they all have the SD cards in them and I didn't realize that I could view the video on the camera with no subscription plan with the SD card. it puts an alert with just a thumbnail so I have to open it up and touch SD card and it plays whatever I wanna see and it actually shows me things faster without waiting time for shit to load than the three cameras on the cloud plan so when it's time to renew in October I'm not renewing. I'm just gonna view everything straight from the sd card.

OP, if you want cameras with no subscription and no risk of change… analog still works. Things like doorbell cameras fall out of this discussion. If you want cheap cameras that you control, wyze cameras can be flashed for rtsp direct connections… but if you want phone app alerts and fancy features, this is not likely the path for you. There are some fantastic low light and specialty cameras available, but your house security will start to resemble the federal reserve, and you will need reasonable IT skills to set up a dvr and remote viewing.

I can recommend Wyze. There’s a monthly 24/7 thing but if you stick a SD card in the camera you can view all the footage remotely. Bonus it’s not a random Amazon brand, it’s something sold at Home Depot

Get cameras with local SD storage. Wyze and others have this. If you want a cameras to work as a security mechanism, you are going to have to stay running some POE and get a couple of purple hard drives

I wouldn't call them BIFL necessarily but based on your criteria, Wyze cams might fit the bill. I have several around my house watching various areas and they all have an SD card slot for local storage and a pretty good mobile app with motion detection and notifications. They do have a cloud service that offers some nice-to-haves like facial detection, cloud storage, and a couple other things, but I've never seen the need. You can access the local SD card storage remotely from the mobile app. The basic cameras are around $25 and the newest one is a Pan tilt zoom 4k camera and it's $60. There are a few in between including battery powered ones. They all have nightvision and the newer ones have a light, they all have two-way communication etc.

I have Wyze cameras. There is a way to pay for cloud storage but I don’t. The camera has a microSD card in it to record events. I get alerts on my phone and can view live or recorded footage. I can also save footage to my phone for safe keeping. They are very affordable cameras.

I use Wyze cameras paired with a docker container (docker-wyze-bridge) that converts the streams into RTSP/etc, and then Frigate in docker as well to do the monitoring/etc. It's all subscription free (Wyze has subscription stuff but none of it is needed for this solution), but you're probably better off avoiding Wyze, if you can. I've always assumed this will one day be broken because someone decided they needed their cut. I've been pretty happy with it though overall. Wyze WIFI cams are very easy to set up and the connection isn't perfect, but acceptable. Also helps if you're ok thinking of your security as a moderately useful side project rather than a full blown reliable security system. But more "legitimate" active monitoring will never be subscription free for obvious reasons

I have a half dozen Wyze cameras around my house with SD cards recording all the time. There are pay options for detection and shit, but I do t pay for any of that. I love the app interface, so for now I’ll keep using them but I can see the features being slowly stripped away.

I’ve been using Wyze for around 2 years and have never needed to subscribe. I’m limited to my cameras SSD for storage, so it’s not the most secure or highest volume, but it does what I need. They also have decent support. I bought a flood light cam that wasn’t working and even though I waited 180 days to install it (exceeding the 90 day warranty) they still gave me a promo code for the replacement when I found the issue.

What products used to be well built back in the day but now are low quality?
Then there's smart bulbs. I was given some Phillips Hue bulbs 8? Years ago and they're still running strong......their cost is a joke, but their life is impressive to say the least. I have some Wyze bulbs that are around five years old and they're doing great...purchased for around $6 for the white with temp adjustment.

Best doorbell camera for grandma, offsite app notifications and footage review/download
I have a wyze cam which is "no subscription". They offer a subscription, I just don't pay for it. But I can still view all of my videos streams and recordings. How it works is that you can pay for their subscription to keep it on their cloud, and get some enhanced features like face recognition. But otherwise if you put in an sd card, it'll record and you can view the recording for however many days back. You still get event notifications and stuff, just none of the ai things. I've been liking it so far. Though they did push an update some time ago that made me think I had to pay for a subscription, but I just had to press a different button. That was kinda skummy.

Do smart home items really work in long term?
I’ve been using smart devices since Google Home launched in 2016. I haven’t had anything outright fail on me yet. I still have Wyze V1 cams and Hue lights working. I’ve only pivoted from Belkin Wemo to Kasa for smart plugs during that time.
