Looking for a rice cooker
Honestly I'd take a cheapo with a stainless steel liner over a zojirushi any day. I married an Asian woman who eats a LOT of rice. Her family had a zojirushi but the hinged top was a pain to clean. We put our $30 rice maker through the ringer over the years.

We have one of the higher-end Zojirushi rice cookers, as well as an Instant Pot. If you're a college student on a tight budget, go with the Instant Pot. True, it won't make rice as good as the Zojirushi - but the pressure cooking feature will let you turn all sorts of cheap stuff into tasty food quickly. You can also sautee in it and the pot is stainless steel and nearly indestructible so no worries about scratching or teflon. Look at the Rio Mini model - it's small but the pot is nice and wide. If you've already got food prep covered and don't think you'll use the pressure cooker feature much, go with the Zojirushi. The rice they make really is excellent and very obviously better than what you'll get with a cheap pot-with-one-button rice cookers. Do be careful with the pot though and only use really soft things to clean it.

Which Rice Cooker is the best?
Yeah you didn’t mess up lol. if you eat rice regularly, it’s one of those buy-once-for-10+ years things. super consistent, keeps rice warm without drying it out, and it handles different grains better than basic cookers. people usually only upgrade within zojirushi if they want induction heating or pressure (IH / pressure IH models), but those are way more $$ and honestly overkill unless you’re super picky or cooking fancy short-grain daily. [other stuff](https://deo9gr5ha90bn.cloudfront.net/?q=GMKAO2089) like cucuko is also great esp for korean-style rice imo. for better texture, especially for short-grain and brown rice, just make sure it uses induction heating.

Good list. I agree with a lot here. I’ll note that the new Levi’s always wear in the crotch for me. I’ve since switched to Patagonia pants. I’ve heard the USA Levi’s and vintage ones still hold up great though but their elastic or blend jeans aren’t as durable. Patagonia is great. Sent in my down puffer to fix a hole in it. They patched it up and refilled the down. Only downside was the wait, but I did it in the summer after the cold. Patagonia worn wear is great as well. Can get some good deals and the condition is always accurate/great. Boot-wise red wings heritage is awesome. Grant stone is also another company I greatly enjoy their boot quality. Le creuset Dutch ovens are absolute work horses. After getting one, it is my most used pot. Incredibly versatile. Also shoutout to the book all about braising by Molly Stevens. Made me a much better cook. All clad pans as well are tanks. Zojirushi rice cooker if you eat a lot of rice multiple times a week. For an office chair, Herman Miller. I found one on Facebook marketplace for cheap after Covid and it saved my back. I’ve had darn tough socks for almost eight years and I’m finally noticing wear/a hole forming on my oldest pair. So once those wear through I’ll finally use their warranty. Incredible value. Artisan cooking/chefs knives. I got a set from a smith and they hold up so well and look beautiful. Hold their edge much longer too. Only had them a few years but I cook quite a bit and I’m genuinely impressed by their build.

Best water bottle to buy
I have used a lot of the bottles mentioned in this thread. Zojirushi is hands down the best for temperature longevity. I hate the drink spout tho. It’s not great function and gets grimy quickly.

Unpopular opinion: The 'BIFL' mindset is becoming a luxury most people can't afford, and that's by design.
It only takes junk to be bought and replaced or trashed to open up and develop a BIFL mindset. Well used 10-40+ years and going strong: fountain pens, old Oster toaster, Zojirushi Rice Cooker, same old silverware, pottery bowls I've thrown, Le Creuset Dutch Oven, Lodge cast iron pan, 8 qt Fagor Pressure Cooker, Classic Victorinox Swiss Army Knife, G-shock watch, butter knife from Goodwill, old repaired Patagonia jackets/vests, etc ... the BILF list goes on and on but it is just stuff that helps make life less hassled, don't have to worry about because the quality lasts or I can repair. Not so much about luxury, just use over time. I think all of these things can be found used, on sale and not full retail.

My husband is Asian. We eat rice 4-5 times a week. We bought our made in Japan Zoji after the Panasonic hand-me-down rice cooker from my mother in law died. I make rice less than 2x/week and it's still been way worthwhile to have a cooker. Mine is a Zojirushi but was more like $100-150. There is no guesswork in rice:water ratio at any scale, no burning on the bottom, no overcooking or undercooking, no thinking or forgetting or monitoring while multitasking, etc. It just makes good rice every time with no effort. Set its timer to have it ready at dinnertime, or just start it right away and it'll sit there ready-to-eat for hours. Leftover rice can stay in for a couple days, ready at any moment. Pot on stove offers none of that.

I second Zojirushi. Thinksport is good as well. The classic stainless bottle she's thinking of is probably a Thermos brand though. They do have 16 oz, unfortunately without the handle. Coleman has some on their site. It's a sub brand named Contigo. We have a few of them and absolutely love them. They stay hot for a long time.

Finding a handled thermos that actually holds up is harder than it should be. The handle ripping off is what usually kills them. You want a single welded stainless body where the handle is part of the metal and not some plastic bracket glued on later. A proper vacuum‑insulated body feels like one solid chunk. If it flexes or creaks, it’s junk. Make sure the inside is real 304 stainless. A lot of cheap ones hide plastic under a “metal” spray coat, and that stuff cracks after a few heat cycles. Since she drops things, look for thicker steel. Around the 0.6 to 0.8 millimeter range survives dents without killing the vacuum layer. Wide mouth lids with full metal threads last way longer than the quarter‑turn plastic collars. Zojirushi makes handled models that fit this kind of build quality, and some of Stanley’s fixed‑handle classics are still decent. Both come in loud colors if you dig around the camping lines. Skip anything with a rubber comfort grip. Those peel, trap moisture, and eventually rot out the metal underneath.

Just boiling is much simpler, pretty much any electric kettle will do fine! They're pretty simple devices, not much to go wrong aside from the risks of any electrical appliance with a heating element, so maybe don't get it from temu and the like. If you want fancy, there are ones that automatically keep the water hot for a set period of time. Zojirushi makes great water-heating appliances of various sorts.

Yeah but it has nonstick coat which scratches so easily after awhile. I got the Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy already and no matter how I was careful with it, wash rice in another bowl, use the silicone paddle, still scratched

I’ve had a fair amount of zojirushi products and they’ve all worked incredibly well. I had the neuro fuzzy and it was amazing, but it got lost in a move. Now I have a cuckoo (South Korea’s zojirushi) and it cooks rice 95% as good for half the price, plus it has a GABA rice feature which cooks brown rice to just a slightly chewier texture than white rice.

Which Zojirushi water boiler is the best?
I've had a CV-DCC40 for about 7 years. The only maintenance I've had to do with it is replace the gasket once (last week) and descale periodically with citric acid. I've had no issues with the nonstick coating. That other model you have listed is a bit newer. It does away with the magnetic breakaway cord (honestly the magnetic cord causes more trouble than its worth so not a huge loss), has a better fill indicator, has cosmetic changes, and has a slightly bigger heating element. Other than that they're effectively the same thing with the same feature sets.

SAFE alternative to Bunn MyCafe Coffee Maker?
Is the V60 pourover issue one that would be solved by the V60 Mugen (AKA too much effort for caffeine)? It's pourover easy mode, I love mine. I have normal V60, and Switch but tend to just use the Mugen most of the time if I'm not making espresso. No blooming, no pour speeds, I literally just dispense water from my Zojirushi boiler straight into it until it reaches the top and wait for coffee. Haven't tried it with preground coffee, but my wife forgot to change from espresso grind settings before and it still made great coffee, so the grind shouldn't be an issue.

What signs do you look for to tell if something will actually last years?
I’d agree if you were talking about smaller companies rather than a single product from a large company. I think you look at the company itself and if the company sells only one thing and it’s really good then your theory holds. But take a company like Zojirushi. Are they a rice cooker company? A bread maker company? A water boiler company? Yes to all. All BIFL. And the key is that they don’t fuff around with crap. So it’s not a single product, it’s whether a company brings that quality to everything they offer whether it’s one thing or a bunch of things - because if they lose their way (*cough* Carhartt Doc Martens Timberland *cough*) even while still offering *that one good thing* it’s inevitable that thing will end up not being so great.

just read your edit. i think it would suit your husband's needs as well! the zojirushi comes with a coffee scoop. i use 2 scoops of drip grinds and fill the water reservoir just below 4 cups and it fills my 20oz yeti tumbler with just enough room for cream/flavoring. i guess the carafe could be seen as not "buy it for life" as it's glass, but if you handle it like glass, you should be fine.

i have small countertop space and didn't want to get a huge technivorm. i ended up with a red zojirushi zutto and love it. i took off stock filter and use a reuseable filter made for hairo v60 pour over maker. it's great, but only recommend if you're making coffee for 1-2 people as it only makes 5 cups. small footprint and zojirushi has a long lasting reputation making quality rice cookers. Zojirushi. I just use it for water (think it’s a slim 16 oz so it fits well in smaller pockets) and it’ll keep it cold for like two days if I didn’t touch it. However, on the flip side it will keep something scalding for an entire workday. Like, just slightly below boiling, so be careful.

Cold: Owala, surprisingly. Got it as a gift and I love it. I did swap out for a metal straw tho. Hot: Give me zojirushi or give me death. I have a couple neurodevelopmental disorders so I'm pretty clumsy. I need: * a straw top to avoid dumping water on myself/up my nose; * insulation to keep my drink hot/cold; * a locking lid to avoid spilling liquid on my keyboard, throw it in my bag, etc; * to minimize plastic; * to cover the straw top so it doesn't get nasty; and * mostly dishwasher safe for cleaning up after non-water hot drinks. I have mix and match Zojirushi stainless vacuum mugs (get stainless so the finish doesn't chip and don't put the plastic locking part part in the dishwasher) and an Owala FreeSip (free from work) with a metal straw for when I need a lot more volume, like for sports practices.

With a new style of water bottle popping up every year, Which one have you stuck with?
Zojirushi that I stole from my mom a decade back. Cold will stay cold, and HOT will burn your mouth hours later if you are not careful. Also completely comes apart for cleaning, which is important for anything with sugar/cream.

I have 3 at the moment. Ironflask is my oldest. I've had it for 6+ years now and it's been great. It's 1 liter and I'll take it to the office. It's been through a bunch of drops. I also have a 500 ml Zojirushi. It's about 4-5 years old. It's not bad, but sometimes it just leaks now :/ Mainly use this for when I'm going somewhere on errands or on trips or for exercise. I've only dropped this one a few times. It's also kind of a pain to clean the spout sometimes. The final one is only 1-2 years old. It's some random \~2 liter bottle that I found at aldi. It's all plastic but holds a lot of water. I use this in my day to day now to make sure I'm hydrated at home.

I am sad to admit I have hopped on the hype train a few times. Hydro Flask, Yeti, and Stanley. The two that I actually still use are my Zojirushi and Owala Free Sip.

I ordered my Zojirushi from eBay from seller in Japan shipped to Belgium. EU outlet and has been amazing in Belgium and Spain. I did have to pay 60€ in custom fees but BIFL has a price tag at times

there are two real contenders for rice cooker BIFL Cuckoo from S.Korea Zojirushi from Japan. I live in europe so zojirushi wasn't very compatible for me here due to availability and the plug. Either one of those will last 10-20 years

Replacement Lid options?
I specifically switched to options that have simple, easy to clean lids. Even if it means less convenient drinking. Zojirushi tumbler with basic screw-on top. built in gasket, tight seal, vacuum-insulated and works superbly for it. Has been mindblowing putting cold soda in with ice (bonus: pre-chill the insulated bottles themselves), I just can't advise closing it with carbonated beverages. Use discretion.

Rice cooker with steamer
Zojirushi is fantastic. Just make sure you get a model that can steam and cook rice at the same time (if that is what you are looking for). Some of the newer models only do one at a time.

Zojirushi is a super solid choice. I've owned several over the years and wouldn't run my kitchen without one it's more important than a toaster to me. My ex was Korean and introduced me to zojirushi back in the 90s. Panasonic also makes quality rice cookers. There are other brands as well, the domestic Japanese home market has many choices. Budget $125-150 and you won't regret it.

I have the tallest one they sold at the time, same exact color as this i think. Its maybe 5 or 6 year old. I abuse it, drop it, put it in the dishwasher. The paint is all coming off, but it still works exactly like the day i bought it. I love that the top part disassembles so easily. Unfortunately, I can only fill the thing up halfway with coffee otherwise at 5pm it's still too hot to drink! I know, i know I'm a horrible person for chucking it in the dishwasher, but this thing is a tank and will outlive me for sure.

Had mine for 12 years and counting. The rubber gaskets are your weak point - replace them when they get funky and don't overtighten the cap. Also don't let coffee sit in there for days like a savage, the staining gets nasty

Looks like an older model. Love our zojirushi rice cooker, and had to replace the nonstick pot recently, due to chipping. The pot from the manufacturer runs about $50 for our model - you can check the zojirushi website to confirm what it would be for you.

Best Quality of life gift ideas under $150
Instant pot rice is perfectly fine if you don’t want to do stove top (I don’t either), but even a cheap Aroma rice cooker makes it “better”. Hard to nail it down in minute detail, but texture wise Jasmine was much better in the rice cooker and sushi rice was better in almost every way in the rc (I used to do instant pot rice before I got a rice cooker at a thrift store. Saving up for a small Zojirushi)

To chime in on Zojirushi, the "mid range" NS-ZCC10 is a big jump in quality from cheaper rice cookers and will be more than enough for the vast majority of people. That's the $200-300 model. Zoji also sells fancier models which go up to $800, but from reviews I've read there are diminishing returns on the rice quality.

Do you drink coffee? I've been eyeing the oxo rapid brewer (like aero press but no paper filter) and I love my zojirushi coffee thermos. And then I don't know after that. Maybe the oxo manual coffee grinder? Maybe a little much if you aren't a coffee snob, or are traveling in a place that has good coffee, but I find having a way to make my own not terrible coffee is wonderful for traveling.

Tiger Rice Cooker - 20 years and still going strong
If you're comparing apples to apples, [the one switch Tiger rice cooker with the flower design](https://www.tiger-corporation.com/en/usa/product/rice-cooker/jnp-0550-1000-1500-1800/) compared to the [one switch Zojirushi rice cooker with the flower design,](https://store.zojirushi.com/products/nsrpc) they're pretty much literally equal. I for the life of me couldn't tell the difference between rice cooked in either of them. There's only two differences between them. The Tiger has a retractable cord that winds back up into the unit itself, whereas the Zojirushi has a detachable cord. The Tiger is made in Japan (although made in China models may exist too) whereas the Zojirushi is made in Thailand. So unless you strongly prefer one cord design over the other (Both cord designs are fantastic and will literally last you decades) or are only considering buying a Made in Japan rice cooker, the Tiger with the flower design or the Zojirushi with the flower design are literally equal.

Zojirushi hybrid water boiler lid completely corroded inside!!
I came back to this as I just noticed the plastic inside the lid has a small crack and feels brittle. My boiler is 8 years old. I went on Zojirushi's website and was able to order both the lid assembly and the gasket for about $50 total. Definitely better than buying another boiler.

I have a zojirushi rice cooker & had been eyeing their hot water dispenser for a few years. I got it for about $40 & it was worth every penny. My mom now lives with me because of her age. She’s able to get herself coffee everyday with it, instantly, which gives her a feeling of independence. I only have to fill it maybe once a week, depending on how much she drinks. My kids can also make instant hot cocoa all by themselves. I set the water to 160, which is the perfect temp for them to do it all alone, safely.

Depends on if they get used -- and how often. For me, the "worth it" appliances are: * Robot Coupe R2 Dice with all the attachments (there are two kinds of food processors -- Robot Coupe and "less than.") * BlendTec blender * Robot Coupe or Vitamix stick blender (big price difference here -- the Robot Coupe is superior, but at a hefty price increase) * Kitchenaid (or better yet Hobart) stand mixer with at least the grinder attachment if not others * PolyScience Sous-Vide pro * MoccaMaster and LaPavoni coffee makers * Zojirushi or Cuckoo rice cookers My coffee grinder is no longer made. So I bought a couple burr replacements. It is unlikely to ever die.

The thing is, my family's Zojirushi bottles haven't needed any replacements for anything... I like that the Yeti is heavy duty, but unfortunately for me, that was a double edged sword because of the weight, so I opted for the lighter Zojirushi. It's nice the caps are replaceable, but I'm also not planning to replace anything on the bottle for as long as possible. Hopefully mine will follow the family bottle and never need a replacement for anything.

As someone who's tried both, zoji is the better option IMO. Yeti is overpriced, I'd assume a large part of their budget goes into marketing. Oowala has been my favorite and nalgenes are top tier for simplicity.

I can easily say the zojirushi water bottle is by far my favorite. I’d say if you are looking for a good insulated bottle that completely comes apart into 3 pieces and is so easy to clean then it’s great. I hate water bottles with hard or impossible to take apart areas for secret water/gunk to build up in. This water bottle solved that issue. Down side is no straw, but that doesn’t bother me as much as it does my wife. I have 3 of them.

Stainless steel or titanium water bottle?
They come in quite a variety of volumes (I think 12 oz is the smallest), but my comment was specifically about the unused space in the insulation "layer" if you can call it that. Said space in the Zojirushis is actually quite narrow as you can see in one of the description pictures [here](https://www.zojirushi.com/app/product/smva), so they're a good option if you want the outside visible capacity to match the inside (insulated) capacity as closely as possible.

Digital weighing scale. Great for portioning food, baking, measuring liquid ratios. Digital meat thermometer. Never undercook or overcook meat again. The only scientifically accurate and consistent way is measuring doneness by temperature. Zojirushi rice cooker. Easily the best rice cooker in the market. The Japanese loves eating rice, and they know best how to cook it.

What is one product or brand that you feel is heavily under appreciated?
Honestly, I think Gränsfors Bruk axes are criminally underappreciated. They’re hand-forged in Sweden, built to last decades (literally lifetime tools if cared for), and yet they don’t get anywhere near the mainstream recognition compared to flashy “outdoor brands.” The same goes for Opinel knives – insanely simple design, but they just work and last forever. On the less “outdoorsy” side, I’d also throw in Zojirushi rice cookers/thermoses. The engineering in those is wild for the price – they outlast most other kitchen gear by years. Feels like we overlook these types of brands because they’re not aggressively marketed, but in terms of buy-it-for-life value, they blow a lot of bigger names out of the water.

A used zojirushi bread machine off eBay. We mostly use it for making pizza dough, but sometimes my fiancée will set it up to have fresh baked bread ready for when we wake up. Having the house smell of bread while rolling out of bed is truly one of life’s greatest joys. I’ll also add in the $15 food scale I bought years ago. It’s been a real game changer with helping my weight loss, plus it’s great for the baking we like to do.

My Zojirushi [thermos](https://a.co/d/cePFbGW) has been a massive game changer for me. When I make coffee in the morning, I immediately transfer it to the thermos and it holds the heat all day and night. I compared it to Stanley and Thermos brand equivalents, but Zojirushi outperformed them while also being the lightest and smallest. It might not be built like a tank, but you really dont need that kind of durability. Its in my backpack or on my desk.

Zojirushi is THE brand when it comes to keeping stuff hot. Similar to Vitamix, in that it’s what is often used for purpose in a commercial capacity; coffee shops will often use their brand for hot water, coffee and tea makers/dispensers. Their rice cookers are well-reputed as well.

I might have misunderstood what you meant by Stanley trigger action. Zojirushi has a flip top which gets triggered or opens by a button. It has outstanding heat retention as compared to my other Yetis and Stanleys.

Search "Zojirushi Stainless Steel Mug" if you don't like amazon. It comes in 16 or 20 oz. Just a heads up, if you put them in the dishwasher the paint job will start to flake off. But they are great thermoses. I filled mine up with coffee at 9 this morning, it's still scalding hot at 3PM. They just need to be hand washed.

Some items I have I wouldn’t stockpile because I only need one. My favorite toothbrush for instance. I find that things that touch my body or my food tend to be products I select carefully and then am fanatically loyal to, so I would be most stressed if my cosmetics, underclothes etc were discontinued. But these are high quality, long duration consumable items that would make me panic if I could no longer find them when I went to get a new one. Hope some of these help!

I liked contigo fine until I had had mine long enough get biofilm buildup that was incredibly hard to clean in the lid mechanism. Seriously. I've been secretly waiting the past 5 or so years for my now 41 year old Zoji to die so I can justify buying one of the new ones with the induction heating and the fuzzy logic and all the whizbang techno goodies... but mine just keeps on keeping on. The inside bowl is all scratched to hell, but it still makes one fantastic fluffy pot of rice.

90s is rather recent in terms of electrical and should not be that different from something more modern. If that is actually the cause then you might want your dad check a bit more than just the rice cooker. That said it probably was not the outlet that killed, just old and worn out components that couldn't quite handle a power fluctuation. As everyone else said the components are pretty cheap I would have your dad replace them

<knocks on wood>I have a Zojirushi rice maker and love that thing. Outside of the battery dying (10 years of time-keeping bliss) it's been rock solid for 23+ years. Bought it when I was stationed in Japan. I am on my second Zojirushi counter top water boiler during the same length of time. The original started leaking and when I took it apart I discovered a tiny rusted out hole had developed along the lip of the warming chamber... that device lasted about 19 years. I ran out and bought another one within a day or two. The only reason I didn't keep the old one was that Zojirushi didn't sell the chamber and was drawing down on selling other parts for that unit.

That sounds defective to me. I’ve had a zojirushi for several years and swear by it. I live in NYC and one of my jobs is primarily outdoor work. The Zojirushi bottle keeps my coffee or tea hot even when it’s snowing! I usually fill it the first time around 6am, and by noon it’s still like I just poured it. I’ve tried YETI and Stanley and the rest, but Zojirushi has honestly been the best one for me. BIFL Rice Cooker: Torn Between New School Zojirushi vs Old School Tatung
Depends on if you like guoba (the browned bits) and if you plan on steaming things other than rice. My zojirushi made rice perfectly every time with no guoba, but if I wanted to steam anything else, the shape of the tatung would be a better fit.

I had an older model and it was extremely difficult to replace the battery. After reviewing a YouTube video I decided to just buy a new one. My daughter took the old one as it still worked if we just press "start." I would call the Zojirushi a long term item but not necessarily BIFL.

What is the Best Coffee Makers on the Market?
Look this might be controversial but I have over 30 coffee makers , all but 1 or 2 of all of the SCAA makers on the market and the MM only makes my top 10 AFTER the shower head mod. My Aarke, Ratio 8 Zojirushie(Best thermal carafe on the market)Wilfa,Kitchen Aid Proline all surpass the MM IMHO. The MM will without a doubt last longer than most due to the copper boiler but I dont care about that when Im making my brew. A Bonavita will serve most peoples needs without the hefty price tag although I will take an older one over the newer ones due to cheaper components in the newer ones.The Breville is good and the option for cone or basket brews is a nice feature.. Best looking the Aarke wins hands down according to my guests but thats not something most care about..Again if you go with the MM get the shower head mod from Coffee Pilot in Canada for $30 plus shipping. Just my opinion everyone has their own opinion on these otherwise the market couldn't sustain so many high end makers. Happy Brewing!!

spent a little less than $200 on our zojirushi like.... 5 years ago? best purchase we've ever made and it still looks literally brand new. it comes with a little plastic paddle. never ever use metal in there and it works and looks quite literally the exact same as when we pulled it out of the box with 0 issue. i think OP's issue is more of a brand/quality one, or a user error issue.

Tiny coffee gadgets that make a big difference?
honestly for affordable options, there is the chemex pour over and the bialetti mokkapot (more of an espresso maker), and then for drip coffee I think the zojirushi is often mentioned as a high quality product, albeit pricier. this is all more so thinking of whether you had guests, and wanted to offer options if they prefer a certain style of coffee. or just if you like to change it up from time to time.

You can get a lot of really high-quality Japanese products in the USA at this point, at least if you're in a city with Asian goods stores - anything Zoujirushi, like thermoses and rice cookers, is great. As for things to get in Japan, I agree on stainless steel nail clippers and knives (if you go to Kappabashi-dori in Tokyo, a lot of the stainless steel knife shops also sell clippers or even include them as a gift if you buy a knife). Silk kimono are very nice, but something you might wear more regularly and which is less expensive is a Tanzen, which is like a quilted short jacket people wear indoors like a house robe in the winter. It's genuinely really useful and comfortable and is made to last a long time.

What are some of the best products/brands you love splurging on?
Quality blender is up there for me too, I am a Blendtec guy but Blendec or Vitamix, either way, if you use a blender regularly it makes a huge difference. I also have the Dyson hair dryer, I got a deal on one of the refurbished models with a coupon, seemed like a ridiculous purchase but that thing is really good. Doubly ridiculous because I really only have a beard to blowdry but a damp neck is not a good thing if you didn't know. Since you mentioned Dyson - Their vacuums are pretty good but in the end I'm not a huge fan, I think bagless is inferior, but a great vacuum is a real convenience, not a fun one but it makes life easier. I recently bought a Sebo D4 and that thing is next-level. Zojirush water boiler/dispenser. I like electric kettles but in the USA with our 120VAC they're slow. The Zojirushi dispensers will hold water at 208º and they last forever. Older models had gaskets that required occasional replacement but they sell the parts, my current one with the double-wall design has been on pretty much for ten years straight except when I unplug it to go on vacation. Great convenience appliance for coffee and tea lovers, especially for someone who does a French press every morning. Great kitchen tools, knives, cookware, utensils. They're all just hunks of metal in the end so anything good quality is buy it for life. Apple electronics, although laptops, phones, etc. can't really be BIFL. Porsche car - Not necessarily the cheapest to keep for life but they claim 70% of the cars they've made are still on the road. Not brand-specific but decent home audio, especially a 5.1 or better surround setup for movie and TV. Even YouTube documentaries sound so much better, you get spoiled by great audio, I find even narration lacks impact and presence when I'm listening to a podcast through earbuds vs. watching on my surround system. And while audiophilia gets people spending ridiculous amounts of money with the proliferation of cheap consumer electronics the last few decades you don't have to spend much to get a way better experience. Bicycle stuff, but not really brand specific and I don't go as crazy as a lot of enthusiasts, but don't mind spending on good bikes, good gear and good accessories. Ekornes Stressless furniture - very comfortable to me, IMO even most expensive furniture isn't really comfortable or ergonomic, a lot of it is plush, superficially comfortable but not supportive and wrecks your neck and back if you spend a lot of time in it. Similarly, Herman Miller Aerons for office duty. Travelpro luggage - most of their lines aren't expensive enough to be a real splurge, but very nice and durable, way better than cheap luggage some of which seems to be single-use these days.

I didn’t downvote you, but happy to point out why I think you are. In reference to the post, the fact stainless steel isn’t immune to rust is irrelevant, since it’s not the reason it looks like it does. The poor quality of the steel used and poor quality finish are. With regard to the mistake being having boiled tap water, also irrelevant. A competent water bottle wouldn’t have this problem. Like I said; been using boiled tap water for almost ten years on my zojirushi, Yeti, Doppler and other thermos bottles and none of them have this issue, after literal daily use with boiling tap water. You might feel like you’re contributing technically correct statements, but they’re not relevant to why this bottle is of poor quality.

LOL, my Zojirushi from 2016 that has been used daily with boiling water because that’s what we drink, has zero rust and looks pristine inside. It has been dropped many times so the outside is dented and scuffed to hell, but internally it’s like new.

I can attest to this same exact situation. I bought a zoji and put hot coffee in at 9am. At 2pm I gave my bottle a swig thinking it should be just past warm but ended up scalding my tongue, roof of my mouth and part of my throat with rippin hot coffee. Zojirushi keep things hot for a long ass time

Zojirushi will do that. Some have commented about paint peeling off. I didn't have that issue, and mine is about 7 years old, but I hand wash mine. Just the design and thought that went into it: From the one hand opening mechanism with lock, to the mouth opening that allowes for air to enter and just the right amount of liquid to exit for you to keep on drinking as lo g as you want, to the slightly ali..er diameter of it to fit easily into a backpack. I’d say three things: my Zojirushi rice cooker, my Inzer lever belt, and my Dutch oven. My Zojirushi is a beast when it comes to making rice. I love the texture of the rice and the timer feature that’s included. I’ve had this for about 2 years and use it for all of my meals My Inzer belt is such a great investment. I’ve been powerlifting for close to 5 years now and got this belt back in 2021. Used to have a crappy belt from Scheels that broke after half a month of use. I’ve been using this for all of my compound lifts. The only annoying thing is adjusting the screws after gaining/losing weight, but I haven’t had too much of an issue. I always look forward to my heavy top sets I recently bought a cast iron Dutch oven and I’ve been loving to meal prep with it ever since! It pretty much replaced my stainless steel stock pot and keeps the heat consistent. Great for curries, creamy stews, or any wet dishes. I heard it’s way better than enamel Dutch ovens since you won’t have any of that coating chip off into your food

People are downvoting you but I don’t think it’s fair. In my opinion, if you’re happy with the way your rice tastes now, then you’re all good. But if your rice cooker breaks or if you want to take your rice experience to another level, try some rice cooked in a zojirushi and you won’t be able to go back. That’s not to say that there isn’t a place for a cheaper rice cooker. Sometimes you don’t have the time to wait for an hour so in those instances it is perfectly fine.

First, pre warm the bottle with hot water from the tap. Second, use something like a Stanley or a zojurishi tea thermos. My wife and I used off brand steel flasks for years in college and the tea was still hot at least til 1pm. By around 3 it generally got less warm, but even then wasn't bad.

what's your ideal water bottle
I really like Zojirushi bottles, as they retain cold and heat and fit into regular cup holders. The cons are that they're prone to paint chip if you dent them. I like the Titanium bottles from Silverant if you want to solve that problem, as they have a double wall insulated one. They're relatively light and certain models fit in the regular cup holder. Cons for that are that it can be pricy if you're not trying to spend that much on a bottle. Glass bottles are excellent for taste, as they don't give off a taste from their material. Try to find one that doesn't have a plastic top if you're worried about microplastics. Personally my vote is the double wall insulated titanium bottle from Silverant. It's a perfect size to have enough water in a pinch, keeps it cold, doesnt chip paint, fits in a cup holder, doesn't leech plastic into your water, and since its titanium, will keep serving you well if you are mindful about not dropping it. Add a rubber boot from amazon if you want to reduce scratches from normal and fall damage. Cheers!

Water bottle that keeps water cold?
Most double walled stainless steel would be similar. My Zojirushi is amazing, but even my Britta double walled is ok. A few tips that I learned through the ages. If you want your water to be "ice cold" then fill the bottle mid-way, freeze it, and when you have an ice block fill the rest with water a few minutes before your departure. This would take time to thaw but will work. Stay away from the sun; keep the bottle inside your backpack. Less is more. If you just have a cap instead of a drinking straw, it's one less part to isolate. Having said all of that, I recently read a review about the Ninja bottle. It is apparently triple walled and not double walled, giving one more layer of isolation and insulation. I bought my Zojirushi bread maker used and it had a ding in it. I have dropped it during a move, knocked it over accidentally, and can't seem to kill it. I just added more dings. I use it primarily to make bread, bagel, pretzel, and pizza dough. Lots of pizza dough. The thing is built like a tank. It has a jam making function that I never even tried yet! Highly recommended.

Is it burning hot for hours? Then it’s probably the real thing 😅. The scuffs are a bummer but on a matte white finish it’s not surprising. It might not be cosmetically perfect but mine have lasted for many years. It almost annoys me how long they last because I want a different color.

A hot water boiler/dispenser has changed our lives for the better and if ours died, I'd replace it immediately. We drink a lot of tea and espresso drinks and having boiling water ready at all times is so convenient and a big time saver. My kids also bring hot lunches in thermos containers and the boiling water makes preheating these very easy. Our is from Zojirushi and we got it about 5 years ago and still works like new.

We purchased our Zojirushi CV-DSC40 VE Hybrid Water Boiler and Warmer, Stainless Steel on 07.20.2014. I’m a tea drinker and use hot water all day long. My husband drinks tea and hot cocoa occasionally. And when we have guests, those that drink tea enjoy using the Zojirushi and it becomes a topic of discussion. My husband uses the hot water for oatmeal packets and Asian noodles. And I use the hot water for cooking and baking. I purchased this unit because the electric kettles didn’t hold that much water, and were not insulated. This meant I would have to fill the unit regularly and that I would have to wait for the water to heat each time I want to use it. The Zojirushi holds a gallon of water and is insulated. It takes hours for it to cool down. Being able to buy replacement parts for the lids is so awesome and ordering them from their website kinda feels like stepping into some sort of late 90s/early 2000s internet time capsule in the goofiest way lol. I have two different sizes of the same model in the same color and love that the same lids work on both. Their insulation is so powerful, one time some coffee I had in one of mine was still warm 2 days later. Fuckin' bonkers and part of why I am 100% team cold brew. My bigger one was the same as yours, bought it used but still like new minus a little paint wear... until I used it to bang on a pan to break up a godawful screaming raccoon fight in the woods behind my house one night a month or two ago. Somehow managed to put some dings in the bottom rim of it so it's a little unstable and wobbly since it doesn't sit perfectly flat anymore, but, boy, I tell you H'WHAT, my hearing ALSO did not come away from that unscathed and my right ear actually physically hurt a little bit for an hour or two afterwards because that's how goddamn loud it is when you use a metal Zojirushi travel mug to bang on a pan instead of some sort of utensil. Got smart and grabbed some ear phones to put on when they started back up again after a little while and I had to go at it a second time... tl:dr their travel mugs are excellent top tier BIFL shit, both as mugs AND used in combination with a frying pan to creating deafeningly loud sounds for breaking up godawful screaming raccoon fights when you're feeling too lazy to scrounge up a shotgun shell for a warning shot

Top BIFL Household Items for Starting Over
I am a sustainability educator and finding things that last are a bit part of that. I’ve done quite a bit of research on possible options. Some of these I have (*) while others have been HIGHLY recommended to me. I would still check out the brand as some people who have had their (insert brand name item that they got 15 years ago here) have said that quality has diminished in recent years and won’t last as long. The second one. I wouldn't buy anything I need to rely on from Amazon to begin with, and it sounds gimmicky anyway. The water boiler from that brand (assuming you aren't also buying it from Amazon) is likely a BIFL purchase, more economical, better built, and has even more use cases.

Zojirushi makes the best drip coffee & you can replace individual parts if needed. Have had mine since 2017 and its still going strong. Timer options so it brews automatically in the morning is also helpful so you can just get up and go without worrying about making it in the morning.

I have a Zojirushi 12 cup, and have had it for almost 10 years now. Still brews at a high temp, and works the way it did when I bought it. I love the idea of the Moccamaster but we use the program feature daily and Moccamaster does not have that. The design is user friendly and pretty easy to clean. I only have had to replace the carafe because I smashed it, but the replacement part was easy to get so no problem.

Coffee maker with specific requirements
I just have an insulated water heater. (Zojirushi, but any brand will work). I drink tea as well so the hot water is useful. This will be easy to descale as you just need to drop some acid in there every once in a while. To make the coffee I used to use an aeropress, but to move away from plastics I use a normal coffeemaker (the old stovetop ones). I just grind the coffee and dispense water.

Hello, **WITH REGARDS TO LOW TEMPERATURE RICE KEEP WARM FUNCTION** It would most certainly not be amazing to allow any lower temperatures for KEEP WARM with rice. This would result in potential rice food safety issues and we will never do this and nor are we permitted by food safety regulations to do this. There is no advantage with Zojirushi. They simply state that you cannot and should not keep rice warm for longer than 8-12 hours. The potential for microbial growth in rice can be dangerous at the low temperatures for any longer period of time. **WITH REGARDS TO YOU THINKING THERE IS A SECOND KEEP WARM HEATING ELEMENT IN ZOJRISUHI MODELS** This isn't a second heating element. As you know, the BGQ05 has a 5mm thick bowl. Zojirushi have the exact same heating element (the steel disk at the bottom of the unit with the middle button that depresses) on all fuzzy logic models. When an inner bowl is as thick as this, the heating element should really be upgraded to a higher wattage, but instead, Zojirushi used this additional heating method. This heating method is only ever activated at the same time as the normal heating element and it doesn't work independently. Already, even with this additional heat source it takes a really long time to cook white rice in the BGQ05 (60 mins); without this additional heat source, it would take 2 hours to cook white rice. This additional heat source definitely doesn't work independently, it only works with the normal heating element. All Yum Asia rice cookers have a similar keep warm temperature because we have to comply with food safety standards in our rice cookers. It is not safe to use a keep warm setting for more than 24 hours, we are surprised that your Zojirushi hasn't malfunctioned sooner because it is not designed to be used on keep warm for days on end, they are only designed to be used for 12 hours on keep warm. There is also a danger for food poisoning keep rice warm for this length of time and is not ever recommended. Please note that we say the above with over 25 years in using rice cookers, designing rice cookers, working with Zojirushi and other leading rice cooker brands and perfecting new ways to cook rice. Hello from Yum Asia! Please note that rice has to be kept at very specific temperatures after cooking (KEEP WARM) for health reasons. This narrow window / range of food safe temperatures is carefully controlled by Yum Asia brand cookers. Too high a temperature and the rice will dry out. Too low a temperature and the rice is kept at a temperature which allows bacterial/microbial growth which can lead to very dangerous food toxic outcomes. In our experience the Zojirushi models (which we also sell) hover at the very lower borderline range of keep warm temperatures which are considered only borderline food safe. Our Yum Asia brand rice cookers keep rice warm at temperatures which are a few degrees centigrade higher. This means that our Keep warm function can keep rice warm for up to 24 hours compared to Zojirushi rice cookers that can only safely keep rice warm for 6-12 hours. Both Yum Asia and Zojirushi rice cookers use fuzzy logic for cooking and keep warm. Whilst Zojirushi uses very basic fuzzy logic, our Yum Asia brand rice cookers use advanced fuzzy logic for more precise cooking and to keep your rice warm more safely. Please note that Zojirushi rice cookers do not have a separate heating element for keep warm. This is not true. If your rice is drying out a little during keep warm, for both Yum Asia and Zojirushi brand rice cookers you should add a few drops of water to the rice every few hours (this is stated in the user manuals of both brands). If you are not doing this then of course the moisture will eventually escape from your rice and this is why the drying out will happen. Hope this helps you understand why food safe temperatures are so important with rice and keeping warm. Happy Cooking.

Zojirushi powder coat quality leaves a little to be desired...
Among the brands I’ve tried, their powder coating seems to be on the more durable end. Also helps that a lot of their models have polished stainless bases as that’s the part that tends to get damaged and start peeling first.

I have a 3 cup one that I ordered in 2013. It no longer keeps the time, and it looks like a real pain to change the CR2032 battery. I also had to replace the plug as the wire by the end was damaged. Someone probably yanked it out with the cord instead of pulling from the molded end. Regardless, it still works wonderfully -- the seals are all in perfect shape, as is the bowl. I know that Zojirushi is a Japanese brand, but my rice cooker was manufactured in China.

I mean, I used my old one for almost 15 years before finally making the jump. There was nothing wrong with the Aroma one, and it made wonderful rice. It's better with the Zojirushi, but it's not like it's anything but a luxury at this point. That being said, they seem to be pretty BIFL, and I've heard of people having luck finding them cheap at garage sales and stuff. My mom actually has a Tiger rice cooker that she bought in Japan when we lived there.... in 1990. She's still using it to this day, so I would definitely trust those brands used.

Simplicity and convenience. I grew up with rice cookers in the household and I've made rice from the stove. They can all produce good quality rice with fidelity depending on your comfort level using the different techniques, but rice cookers can help people who aren't great at gauging time on a stove or ratios in an instant pot or if they're busy. I use an instant pot to make rice currently but in the future when my living circumstances change, I plan on getting the Zojirushi just for the convenience of sparing my instant pot for cooking something else simultaneously.

We haven't given GABA rice a try yet, which seems to be the main benefit of this model over the ZCC, so I can't tell you if it's worth it. But pretty much every review I could find said that one of these two models is the best choice. (Although I can't lie, they have even more expensive models that just look so pretty. But the HCC already cost more than I would have though I'd ever spend on a rice cooker...)

I’ve had my Zojirushi for probably 16 years or so. It’s moved 5 times with me now. It’s got a crack in the lid but still makes perfect rice. I’ve spoken about it as the only appliance I’d take to a desert island if I got one. Yeah that’s impractical, but I can’t think of a kitchen appliance, other than the coffee maker, I’ve used more than the Zojirushi. It’s a real road dog. Zojirushi is great but I think you are missing the IH part. Newer models have a much thicker inner pot and more uniform heating, too. If you are a rice lover, I do notice a difference in IH pressured cookers, but the price can be 2x/ 3x.

I didn't either until my boyfriend moved in with his rice cooker. It made rice consistently delicious and fool proof. And that was with a push-button Tiger. Fast forward to now and we have Zojirushi and the rice is at a whole new level. The flavors are more complicated and the consistency/texture is incredible too. Thank being said, you can find a Cookoo rice cooker for $60 on sale and it's worth it.

Power to you, I’ve also been in the situation where I lack the counter space for a rice cooker. I *can* cook rice on the stovetop, but if the option exists to automate it, I’m gonna do it every time if I’m able. Unless I’m shooting for something in the ballpark of middle-eastern/persian tahdig where it needs to be crispy on the bottom. But even then? Now that I own a Zojirushi, even if I move into a place with half the counter space I currently have, I’ll find a place in a cabinet for the rice cooker to live when not in use. It’s perfect every single time with zero extra brainpower required, even if you can’t keep it running on Warm on the counter it’s worth it to me.

Yeah that's fair - the rice does come out differently from the two machines. I don't really prefer one over the other but the Zojirushi rice is moister and textured differently or something. I like the [scorched rice](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scorched_rice) you can get from the cheap cooker if you leave it on warm too long. But yeah if you prefer the Zojirushi style rice that's another good reason to spend the extra money.

The keep warm function on a good quality rice cooker (doesn’t even have to be the $200+ Zoji, just not the $20-50 black and decker types) is invaluable. But even the cheapo ones take the guesswork out of it and turn the act of making rice into a hands off task that lets you worry about other things in the kitchen. To do stovetop rice *well* takes a certain degree of fussing over the pot and the temperatures. If I’m trying to serve up a main course, plus a veggie side or two, having the rice done by itself is a huge win.

I just recently upgraded from an Aroma rice cooker that I bought in 2010 to a Zojirushi, the induction model. The Aroma definitely made rice, and made it well enough. It still works fine, and I used it regularly. We only upgraded recently because I have always wanted a Zojirushi and we found one on sale. The difference in rice quality is night and day. I would not be able to (happily) go back to the Aroma. I don’t know how to describe it, but the rice I have been eating over the last few weeks has been so much better. At very least, it isn’t nearly as mushy as the Aroma was. (And I have experimented with water levels a LOT over the last decade and a half.) So I’d take it a slight step further and say that if all you can afford is a $20 rice cooker, it’s absolutely going to be fine. But if you can afford a nicer Tiger or Zojirushi, it is absolutely worth the price difference and then some.

This might be an unpopular opinion but if all you want to do is cook rice I think the $20 rice cookers are perfect and last a long time (eg [this one](https://www.amazon.com/Housewares-cooked-Cooker-ARC-363NG-uncook/dp/B00N9N6GOY/)). If, instead, you want to be able to cook rice and then keep it hot on standby for a while then the more expensive Zojirushi becomes worth it. I've got a Zojirushi that I've had for over 10 years and I really like it - its easy to just put some rice on early and then later cook the rest of dinner and have rice done and waiting for you. But if you're on a budget the $20 one is great and reliable. Not to mention you can just cook rice in a normal pan also.

What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?
So many of my BIFL recommendations are kitchen gadgets. So skipping the obvious: Lodge Cast Iron Skillet! Zojirushi Rice Cooker (a made in Japan model) Vitamix Blender (skip all the fancy sensors and electronics, the 5200 series is great) Kitchen-Aid Stand Mixer (if you are a Sam's Club member, they nearly always have the "bowl-lift" model on sale for $300) Cladded Stainless Steel Cookware - (Hestan, All-Clad, Heritage Steel, etc.) This is splurge purchase, but you're a big espresso nerd, a European made espresso machine, thinking companies like Rancilio, Profitec, ECM. Thermo-Works instant read thermometer (Thermapen One) I use all of these at a minimum weekly, but as often as daily, or multiple times a day (espresso), and they've all lasted me and my wife years and some are pushing decades now.

Getting a Zojirushi was one of the best kitchen decisions I've made. Even though it took me an embarrassing amount of time to learn that they have a [page with instructions](https://www.zojirushi.com/grains/) on non-japanese rice, it still did a pretty great job on my questionable ratios of basmati rice:water.

Not sure how long some of these will last yet but definitely improved my quality of life. Bidet with warm water and seat heating - it feels so nice. Zojirushi hot water heater that keeps warm - it’s great to have a hot cup of tea whenever I wanted. Tesla with full self driving - Full self driving takes the stress away from driving, like having a personal driver. Car is basically zero maintenance. I have free charging available near by.

What’s your best lazy-but-functional home upgrade?
Zojirushi Water boiler. I drink a lot of tea, and I can't even count the number of times I would start a kettle, leave to do something, forget I turned on the kettle, suddenly remember, and then come back to warm water. So I got something that always keeps the water hot. Its also useful for when I need to boil water for cooking.

Is this Zojirushi water bottle legit?
I own a zojiroshi flask and it’s really superior to many other cheap ones I had owned. I use it for camping and long trips, and after 24 hours my drinks are still hot/cold. The small parts mean you can take them out to clean easily. I’d say it’s worth every penny.

Uniqlo basic tees and their selvage jeans are good everything else is sub par quality. Muji has better quality shirts. Charhartt wip are pricey but worth it. Work boots. If you can afford redwings those are amazing. If you cant, wolverines are good intro boots. Ive had a pair for 10 years and counting ive only had them repaired once. Watch I chose a seiko automatic not too expensive but reliable easy to maintain and relatively stylish. As someone that walks as a main mode of transportation there are NO BIFL sneakers/shoes so buy whatevers comfortable and just trust that youll need to replace them after a year (or 2 max) and since everyones foot is different youll need to find a shoe that you have tried before buying. Rain coat columbia is the best IMO. North face is literally the heaviest out of the rest. Patagonia is OK but theres something about it im not comfortable with. Backpack. Waxed canvas. Just remember to check the wax on it regularly. No specific brand in mind its more of the upkeep I have literally 20+ different insulated tumblers ive only used 2 on a daily basis. One is a standard 22oz silver one with no paint coating. Its all beat up but it has character and since it doesnt have paint my ocd doesnt get triggered. The second one is an old hydroflask back when they were just starting and not a money grab company they are now. Its an open top cap one for coffee. Lunch box, zojirushi lunch jar. Yes this is pricy but as someone who is well in his 30s and brings lunch to work this is awesome cause it keeps food hot for 8hrs (warm till 12hrs) ive had mine since college. This thing is pretty indestructible im pretty sure it would out live me. Also since im also part asian zojirushi rice cookers are built to be handed down generationally. Right now im out of what else to recommend but let me know if youre looking for a specific item ill let you know my thoughts on it. Yeah other people would recommend the best most expensive but on an actual practical level im a pretty safe bet to ask.

Zojirushi Bread maker for $250 that I still use. Had to buy new mixing wings since they wore to the point where they didn't move the amount that needed to mix. bought and extra set at the same time since I saw the mixer was now discontinued. $200 samsung laser printer that I've never had to buy toner for yet and I got it in 2013 just so I didn't have to go to the library to print while in college 🙃

On the advice of America’s test kitchen I got the Zojirushi Zutto, it’s a simple 6 cup machine but it brews really good coffee. The only downside is that it takes the 4-6 cup Melitta cone filters and you have to fold them along the crease to fit but it’s not too annoying.

Someone asks for drip coffee maker i always recommend my zojirushi coffee maker [zojurushi YTC100](https://shop.zojirushi.com/products/ecytc) Ive had the same one for probably 8 years now - still works as if it were brand new. Thermal carafe > glass carafe. No hot plate to worry about rust or glass shattering. The best part is they sell or will replace individual parts so you dont have to buy a whole new machine if you dont need to.

Not sure about a food specific thermos But I know zojirushi is constantly recommended as the top end of heat retention. Almost to a fault where hot coffee is too hot and people state they have to artificially cool it a bit.

When my wife and I got married nearly 22 years ago, we furnished our entire house with a bed, washing machine, microwave, couch, TV, etc, etc. The ONLY thing left that hasn't died and/or been replaced is our Zojirushi rice cooker. It's not an exaggeration to say that we use it 6 out of 7 days a week and sometimes several times in a day. It's still going strong.

Anyone have good experiences with glass travel mugs?
The best travel mug I've used is my stainless Zojirushi. The insulation is amazing, don't make your drink too-hot, or it will remain too hot to drink for a long time. You can open & close it with one hand. It does not leak, at all, even if you leave it upside down. There is a latch to keep it locked, for extra security, which can still be opened & closed with the 1 hand. Release the latch, push the button, and the lid flips open. The other thing I like is that the part you put your mouth on is covered by the lid. So if it tips over in a bag or whatever, you're not getting stuff onto an area that you put your mouth on. I use a Zojirushi and was able to get a 3rd party SS replacement. Prices are a bit silly though, $50 on Amazon and $25 on Ali. It works well. I get a bit of sticking at the bottom but no burning and it's better than dealing with Teflon. When/if I get a new cooker I'm going to try the ceramic coated Yum Asia one.

I use a Zojirushi when I'm deer hunting. I put hot coffee in it at 5am and it's still hot enough to burn my tongue 5-6 hours later. Sometimes it's single digit temps or even a little below zero now and then and it still works.

Out of those options zojirushi but brumate or yeti makes better ones that keep drinks hot longer. Switched to brumate tumbler when my takeya lid broke (and it WASN’T leakproof) the lid is actually leakproof, drinks stay hot for hours and they fit in standard cup holders. You can find them at TJMAXX and the like when they discontinue colors. I’ve used the same one daily for the last three years and it looks the same as new (hand wash only).

This has been my experience with the Zoji food flask. I need to let food cool a bit before adding it, otherwise it's going to be hard to eat. It's very impressive. My only complaint is the amount of components the lid is comprised of - cleaning is a pain, and the smaller gasket is easy to lose.

Zojirushi all day every day. I’ve had mine for over a decade (the exact model in the picture). It’s fallen off the roof of my car when I forgot it was there many times. Still works fantastic. Has never leaked. Keeps coffee too hot, I need to put ice cubes in it if I want to drink it in a reasonable time frame.

I’ve been using my Zojrushi on construction sites regularly for a decade the only time I ever had a problem with a spring was when it fell off a 2 story scaffolding and landed square on the lid.

I got the Takeya and the lid broke the first time I dropped it. After researching, I found it's a common problem. Replacement lids are available, but I got the bottle for $10 at TJ Maxx and it wasn't worth it to get another. I'd get the Zojirushi.

I have the Zojirushi and it almost keeps hot tea and coffee too hot... I can't drink straight from the container for30 minutes to an hour after brewing and have to pour into another cup until it cools. Great for keeping drinks hot... but almost too hot. I have no experience with the Takaya, but it's been on my radar.

You're not wrong. That said, the zojirushi qualifies as well. And it has several features that.a stainless steel pot does not. Namely: coming home after a 12 hour day and you want to make something simple? Put in a cup of rice and water, hit a button and let it go. Then while it's cooking, you sit in your chair watching some Netflix.... And then Whammo it's 6 hours later. Guess what? That rice is as perfect as it was when it first beeped. Had we gone with the steel pot, we would be hearing some smoke detectors midway through that nap. Ive had my rice cooker over 20 years now, and love it so much I buy more of them and give it as gifts to less cooking-friendly people. Truly is BIFL. I hope my All-Clad lasts that long. It's only 3 years old at this point.

Eh 2. My wife has one too. Expensiver than frig. A real runner. My mom did crack the lid cover off but it is not a functional part. She did a stupid as she often does. But does regular rice. Brown rice where the rice cooker converts... something? Sorry. Can't remember. Okayu (rice porridge). Rice that is burnt on the bottom. Has a timer that keeps time even when not plugged in. You can tell it to have rice ready at 5pm. Probably has 10 more settings. It is entirely too much. And better brush up on your Japanese.

What brands do you trust to always deliver a high quality product?
My wife's roommate moved out and left her rice cooker. We have been using it weekly for the last 15+ years. I looked it up a few months ago because it's getting a little small with the kids and found out it was a Zojirushi. One of their super basic models. Probably buy one of their nicer models when we finally need one.

If you need one that takes abuse, look at zojirushi. I have a 950ml bottle that has fallen of mowers/tractors and even a loader once and it never dented once. It’s scratched up real good but takes a licking and keeps on ticking.

Looking for Tupperware alternatives
I use pyrex, silicone lids are an option, those are nice. But for the squares I use plastic lids, food doesn't touch them and they've lasted me a long time even with the dishwasher. plus if you do manage to break or lose one they are replaceable. I'm really happy with them esp since they double as small baking dishes, or to bake and just put a lid on the leftovers, or reheat the leftovers in the oven. FOr my lunch I use the little pyrex rounds with silicone if I'm microwaving at work, or else lunchbots ss bentos and HF, Lunchbots or Zoji insulated jars.

You’re looking for 32oz. Right? I don’t have any of those. I like them. They hold their temp. The double lock is easy and secure. And they just look nice. I use them for coffee, soup and sometimes drinks. But the opening is so small it doesn’t fit my big fat mouth and I can’t get ice cubes into them. Looks like the bigger ones have the same issue. So I mostly use thermos brand and leave the zojirshis to my kids

I know I'm late to the party. I have an over 20 year old Zojirushi with the old Neuro Fuzzy logic. I got it as a gift back in college, and it is still a workhorse. I am actually looking up what rice maker to replace it with, since I can tell it is finally dying on it. You can solder a new battery, you can replace components like the bowl, but when the base finally start to go you can't keep it going. My only wish is that they would get rid of the Teflon coating, but I still am probably going right back to Zojirushi anyway. It might cost a lot, but when I break down how much a month it cost, it was less than $1 a month.

I guess the easy answer is consistency and the value of my time. My rice cooker cooks perfect rice with only a couple of minutes to measure and rinse the rice, then I can walk away and come back with a great result. Same thing with the bread maker — once you know your favorite recipe by heart you can measure and dump ingredients in <5 minutes and have lovely bread in 4 hours without touching it again. My insulated travel cup? Well, I bought my Zojirushi at Goodwill for $5 basically brand new. 😬

I’ve cooked maybe 1000 batches of rice and the result was 1000 batches of perfect rice If i reheat it in the zojirushi it comes out 95% as good as fresh It can keep it warm for hours I can cook a meal and step away for 1hr and forget the rice and he’ll be perfect Also it sings a song to me. That’s worth $290 alone!

**Zojirushi SM-SF48** stainless mug. I have tried several travel mugs for coffee and this one is downright the best. I like to use my mug with coffee, tea and coffee with milk, I use the mug in travel, train scenarios and in my bag, so it has to be spill proof and not just a cup with a plastic lid. This is the best I have tried. Zojirushi is excellent, but also more delicate than hydroflask. If they broke a hydro that easily they need something MORE durable (or a silicone sleeve). I think Stanley is touted as more durable still, but hydro normally is pretty good too.

I can only comment on things made in Japan, but here goes: Mac Knives - Very good quality yet reasonably-priced (if price is no object, then there is an endless supply of other makers, including famous ones like Misono as well as small-volume shops that only sell locally) Makita - Power tools Miyazaki Seisakusho - Their "Geo" line of stainless steel pots and pans is very high quality, similar to All Clad Mont-bell - Outdoor gear and clothing Zojirushi - Rice cookers, hot water dispensors, insulated bottles, etc. And of course, Nikon, Canon, Sony, etc. all make great quality camera gear (though they all make cheap stuff too). Stationery isn't exactly BIFL, but Japan is known to have high-quality pens, pencils, paper, etc. Similarly, towels don't last a lifetime, but Imabari towels are really high quality. There's even a Towel Museum in Imabari.

What are the most impactful kitchen items you'd recommend?
Not a huge gadget guy. Mostly I use a fork or a spoon for mixing stuff. A knife for chopping. I do love my knives though. A BIG convection toaster over. A very small microwave. The smallest plainest 3-cup Zojirushi. Little crock pot, which I guess was the original size. Regular drip coffee maker. An old Oster blender that has mainly been used for daiquiris, margaritas, ..and my favorite oj, banana, raw egg and honey smoothie.

Coffee machine for life? (or at least a few years)
I have had my zojirushi drip coffee machine for close to a decade. It's still going strong. Zero issues. But if I do need to replace a gasket or the carafe or really any part, they sell replacement parts for a reasonable price. Insulated carafe, no paper filters needed. Looks like something out of a 90s Tokyo kitchen though.

Zojirushi will keep your beverage hot and you can lock it so it won't even leak if you throw the full of beverage container in bag. The tea or coffee will leave some stain on the inside, so every once in a while throw a denture cleaning tablet and hot water in it, like new. Use a straw cleaner to clean the sippy part of the lid. Enjoy!

I had one for almost two years, bought it used. It was great, but the previous owner scratched it pretty badly. I thought I could buy a replacement bowl, but their website always showed it out of stock. Eventually I decided to resell it to another family (they knew it was scratched..). Now I'm cooking rice with an instant pot, it's faster, but the texture is not nearly as good. Enjoy, but don't scratch your bowl!

I've had one nearly 10 years now and even the non stick is absolutely perfect. Its easy to give a proper clean. Probably the best appliance Ive ever owned. I remember when I bought it family and even the mrs, " why spend that much on a rice cooker". Its probably the cheapest appliance when you factor in cost per year and per use. Vitamix is a close second. I went through a blender probably every year or two before finally getting a vitamix which has also now lasted 10 years and works out miles cheaper than keep buying a worse, cheaper model every year or so.

We found one at Target a couple of months ago for $80. It felt silly spending so much for a rice cooker but it’s game changing. My only slight complaint is that the keep warm function doesn’t seem to do the greatest job keeping the rice warm. I left some rice in the cooker for like four hours and the rice had cooled to barely above room temperature.

I moved back home during lockdown. The first thing I introduced to my mother was my Zojirushi NeuroFuzzy, which I'd had for 12ish years at that point. She was like "it takes up so much counter space, will you actually ever use it?" By the time I moved out, my mother was so attached to it that I left it for her. And immediately bought another one for myself. Also during college I wrote a terrible silly novel in which some friends' NeuroFuzzy gained sentience and became a drummer in their rock band. A lot of big Japanese companies make products BIFL because the Japanese use their products for a helluva long time. I think I read somewhere that German products last a long time but they must be maintained properly and precisely according to the manual. Any deviation and it just won't last. Whereas Japanese engineers designed their products assuming they'll be worked hard and not taken care of properly (it might have been a post about Toyota vs German made cars lol). Regardless, that's been my personal experience. We have a Zojirushi water boiler and it runs well (although, despite using it every day for 6 years, it's not like I would expect to have issues anyway lol). Parents have one that's easily 10+ years old and still runs great. They have a Panasonic microwave that they got the year I was born and it still runs like a damn tank (it's almost 40 years old!). That microwave is used daily and still looks and works like brand new! Wish more things were like that in this world.

Honestly, it’s not something folks *need*, but for me, improved quality of life where carbs are concerned. Mine has lasted over a decade and we replaced the inner nonstick bowl. (The non-stick can wear out after about six years and starts peeling, depending on frequency of use.) We also sometimes set it up at night in timer mode to cook oats. Delicious.

Got mine 15 years ago and it shows no sign of dying. I use it at lease once a week for rice, and every once in awhile for oatmeal. The only flaw is that the battery that controls the clock is soldered to the main board so it’s not easy to replace.

I had one, not this model, that wouldn't turn on after 10 years of loyal service. I replaced it with a cuckoo. I am very tempted to list the cuckoo for sale somewhere and pick up a five cup zojirushi. The rice is ok, but it's huge, I absolutely hate how it talks to me, and it feels cheap. It's also harder to take the top lid off for cleaning and I have arthritis.

I was very skeptical, but the quality is so much better I wondered how I had subsisted on substandard rice for so long. Rice is perfectly "al dente" and somehow more ... moist? Def stick to the recipe/water amount for the kind of rice you're cooking, but other than that, dead simple.

Eh, there’s definitely something to be said of their quality. They are way more BIFL than half the stuff that gets posted. I have a 10 cup Zojirushi that’s from Thailand. Looks like something a grandma would have. Super simple to use and has ran the same as right when I got it. It shouldn’t be shocking that a subreddit about quality appliances and homegoods might have two posts in two days about a popular premium rice cooker you can get.

We've used their basic cone-drip coffee maker with stainless carafe for over 15 years now. The taste is similar to french pressed coffee yet it is piping HOT (especially if you warm the carafe first), which we prefer. We've tried a few newer high-end coffee makers that we received as gifts over the years but we always come back to our Zoji!

Cycles of different lengths for different types of rice or grain; replaceable nonstick inner bowl, very good extended keep hot mode (12+ hours) that keeps the rice safe to eat all day. Clock modes for starting cooking to be done at a specific time. I use mine for other dishes as well as plain rice — adding salmon or chicken to cook with the rice; steaming vegetables and bao. I made bread pudding in it as well. Some Instant pot accessories like a steamer fit well, so you can steam veggies atop the rice while it’s cooking. IMO, the rice also seems to come out better quality- fluffier?

This is the same one I have! I absolutely love it. I’ve been big on Zojirushi ever since I bought one of their bread machines on eBay for like, $40 five years ago. The thing is easily 30+ years old and works amazingly. The only reason I’ve ever considered getting rid of it is because I want a 2 lb machine.

What are some BIFL Wedding Gifts?
These are really expensive but Breville toaster oven, zojirushi rice cooker, vitamix blender and immersion blender, le cruset Dutch oven, 3D printer, kitchenaid stand mixer and accessories, Brother printer, all Clad pots. A lot of these companies have refurbished options you can ask for. I think any of these items would be great secondhand.

Can confirm, the made in china Zoji's are perfectly reliable. Zoji doesn't mess around with quality control. I've used my NS-LGC05 probably 4 days a week for the last 7 years and it's still going strong with no issues. Including the 4 of 5 times I've stupidly forgot to add water and it auto shut off due to overheating. lol

instapot is a bit more of a hassle to use and clean. I’d say the rice is great white ppl rice in an instapot, but rice cookers are better. We are white but eat a lot of asian food. Wife would rather use/have the instapot and no rice cooker, but I miss my Panasonic with non-stick bowl. Although I’d rather have zojirushi or even better, something with a non-stick ceramic bowl and inner lid (my Panasonic had an aluminum inner lid that was more difficult to clean than a polished steel inner lid would have been.

But my Zoji allows me to do things like put the rice and water in at 8am, leave the house, and come home to freshly cooked rice at 5pm. It also has settings for things like white and brown rice mixed together, which usually require different cooking times, but I can put them in the pot together and they still turn out perfectly. My kids complain if I made just brown rice, but if it's mixed with white, it's a little healthier and nobody is bothered by it.

I can only comment on zojirushi because that's the first one I bought and it's been running strong ever since. I've had it probably about 10 years and never had any issues. I use it all the time too so 10 years of consistent use I'd say is a pretty good testament.

When it comes to keeping coffee hot, nothing beats zojirushi. It’s blazing hot (too hot to drink), even hours later. That said, the zojirushi has a lot of plastic parts, so I don’t know how durable it would be bringing it to a construction job site every day.

Have you cleaned it properly? I clean mine with the tablets once every few months. Even water will leave a film that builds up and needs to be cleaned. I don't known about the straws, I don't buy bottle with them as they gross me out. I've said it many times in this forum, zojirushi is the best brand on the market, imo. Easy to clean and keeps things hot/cold for a very long time. A worthy investment. (Not the travel mug with the plastic lid, those suck).

Zojirushi is far superior. I have three, a 20, 26, and 64. I've had may Stanley's in the past and Zojirushi stays far hotter for far longer. I also have several yetis, brumate (the worst of them all), pelican, contigo, ninja, hydroflask, and so many more. Zojirushi is the standout best.

I don't drink coffee/store anything in a thermos but I do spend entirely too much time on reddit. The repeated opinion here is that Stanley has cut corners over the years leading to a lower quality product and to buy a zojirushi instead.

What is your favorite category of BIFL products?
I am not saying electronics can't be BIFL but most aren't because we want "feature". We have maybe 6 pieces of electronics that made it past 10 years that we still use regularly. Zojirushi Neuro Fuzzy Rice Cooker Zojirushi Micom Water Boiler & Warmer Vitamax from Costco years A Bothers Laserjet/Scanner combo GE Cafe Series Fridge from like 2013, no Wifi nothing special other than it boils hot water DD-WRT based gigabyte router (no wifi) The common thing these 6 things all do well is that they do their primary function extremely well and based on well established protocols. There no bell and whistles on top.

I have had both. Used the tiger for 7 years and then switched to zojirushi. I prefer the zoji for the easy of cleaning (the cheapest made in Japan tiger doesn’t allow removal of the inner top lid), keep warm function is better (doesn’t dry out the rice) and the cute song.

Interesting. Mine does get some condensation on the topper inner lid, but it's not excessive. Something I really like about the Zojirushi is that it's so easy to disassemble the lid topper w/seal, and the outer steam vent, to sop up any leftover moisture. It's so well made. When I bought a replacement bowl (the original had gotten scratched due to a careless prior user), I also picked up a spare vent cover because it was just $6 and the original was scratched. Well, I used a plastic polish on the original part and it cleaned up beautifully--looks like new. Over 20 years old too.

Funny, my Zojirushi 3-cup from 1993 was passed down to me from a relative, with a scratched up bowl... and I got a replacement. It's like new again. Thing works great. The old battery inside it to keep the time is shot. But there's a DIY on replacing it. Just haven't bothered.

My family has both. We prefer the Zojirushi one bc there’s no condensation on the topper inner lid which makes the rice soggy when it’s in the keep warm mode(if there’s extra rice in there). Both are good models tho. We use the Tiger one on past rode trips I believe. My family really loves our rice- it’s our daily staple regardless what’s being cooked.

I have that Tiger model, and have owned Zujis in the past. No discernible differences tbh, just get whichever you like the look of better. Plenty of people just buy the Zoji because it is perceived as the best, but plenty of companies make great rice cookers.

I got a zojirushi for our wedding and it lasted 5 years before it died. We replaced it with a tiger from Costco 6 years ago and it’s still going strong. In the period after we switched I missed the zojirushi but at this point I can’t remember. I think either way you’ll be happy, both are way better than any other rice cooker I’ve used.

We've used Zojirushi in our family forever. My MIL was Korean and expected the rice to turn out just right every time and that brand delivered. I had a large one for 10 years and can't even remember what happened to it but I had to replace it so I did with a great 3 cup. Had it for 9 years and gave it to my FIL when my MIL died early last year. She only had huge ones and for a single person it made too much. I replaced it with another similar one that actually cooks slower because it was cheaper.

Both of these are old-fashioned models by Japanese standards (the Micom rice cooker was introduced in 1979). Zojirushi is the industry leader in Japan but Tiger is close behind. I doubt that you could tell the difference if you made a blind comparison.

I have the tiger and I regret it. It’s a very nice machine that cooks brown rice perfectly. For white rice, the tiger made the rice nicely but the issue is that the warm function is entirely too hot and dries the rice out quickly. If you take all the rice out after cooking this shouldn’t be an issue, but I keep a pot on all day to have nice warm rice. Make sure you get a Zojirushi neuro fuzzy model. Those a made in Japan.the micom version is made in Thailand or somewhere else.

Tiger includes steamer baskets which may be nice for veggies. Never had one though. My 2000 era zorojirushi died a slow death so replaced with a new one a couple years ago. It cooks rice well but slower than the older model

Another shout-out for Zojirushi. Great rice cooker we've had for nearly 20 years. I ordered a couple new non-stick pans from the factory as the non-stick was starting to chip off where people banged the spoon around the rim. We use it once/twice per week.

My 26+ year old rice cooker
I just got a made in Japan Zojirushi for christmas and I am absolutely in love. It is amazing- the inner lid pops out and is easily cleaned, there's no water leaking anywhere due to a great gasket system, and the cooker doesn't close unless the inner lid is clicked in right. The controls are intuitive and customizable, it tells you how long until it's ready, it *sings*, it's an amazing little system and I just know it will last us forever. My dad has a made in Japan Zojirushi bread machine that he interited from my grandpa in 2011 and it is still kicking, making a loaf or two a week and pizza dough every Friday. The best!

My zojirushi coffee maker has lasted me year on years, and if you ever need to - you can get individual parts from them instead of having to get a whole new setup. Its a thermal carafe which pushed me to them once my mr.coffee glass carafe and hot plate shattered when i went to pour myself a cup. In probably the 7 years ive owned it, its made a consistently good cup of brewed coffee everyday.

Bodum French press. The regular glass ones. I have two of them in different sizes they’re probably 15-20 years old. They don’t get much use these days because cleanup sucks when you don’t have a garbage disposal. Melitta pourover. I’ve had it since about 2009-2010. It cost less than $4 at the time and and still gets some use. It takes #2 filters that can be found in most supermarkets. Some people won’t like that it’s plastic. Capresso Infinity burr grinder. It’s over 10 years old at this point and still gets used 3-4x per week. Some would argue that it doesn’t grind fine enough for espresso but it does what I need it to do. Aeropress. Pretty much my daily driver lately. Again, some people won’t like that it’s plastic. Bialetti moka pot. I’ve had it for over five years and to be honest I don’t use it much because it’s too big for just myself. I’m sure other brands are as good, but replacement gaskets are easy to find online. Zojirushi thermos. Doesn’t leak and will keep your coffee hot all day long. It’s kind of annoying to drink directly from as vapor collects on the flip-top lid and might drip onto you.

Unpopular Opinion: "BIFL" as an excuse for overspending

(Yes I know your mom’s Aroma rice cooker worked perfectly fine for the last 10 years as well.) Really happy with my Yumasia. Zojirushi is recommended all the time, but I think they're sleeping on some cool improvements. Yumasia seems to be the only one who uses ceramic enameled bowls. They are fairly non stick but also not toxic unlike the teflon in zojirushi. The higher end models use a cool bowl which is basically lined with a thick ceramic layer on the inside (I think about 3mm, maybe more) with a stainless steel outer layer. That allows them to be thinner (lighter) and use induction. The cheaper models just use a very thick ceramic bowl heated from the outside - which is also very cool and simple. I love mine, you can use the bowl to serve and it looks really nice.

Thirding Zojirushi, even their 400ml coffee tumbler keeps my coffee drinkably warm after ~12 hours. It also takes a significant beating, I've dropped mine on rocks etc and it's banged up but still intact.

So grandad thermos would have been glass lined - you don't want that. you want a double wall stainless steel - which is way more advanced than the old thermos of yore. Zojirushi is what you want to buy. Stanley Thermos question
Stanley does not make them in the USA anymore and they are not the same. Get one on ebay or go with a Zojirushi or Nissen. On ebay it should say where it is made, however the USA ones are heavier and feel like thicket metal, especially around the rim. My dad has the one we snagged at a garage sale when I was a kid, those things are tanks.
