Cutting Boards - Not plastic or wood
I don't get the Bamboo part. I have one for over 10 years now and apart from a colleague grinding it off for me once (I spilled super glue on it... Not the board's fault...) I never did anything other than oil it every now and then. The thing is looking like new. It's one of these, the orientation of the grain and the thickness might help though: [https://www.zwilling.com/dw/image/v2/BCGV_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-zwilling-master-catalog/default/dw0462fce1/images/large/30772-100-0_01.jpg?sw=720&sh=720&sm=fit](https://www.zwilling.com/dw/image/v2/BCGV_PRD/on/demandware.static/-/Sites-zwilling-master-catalog/default/dw0462fce1/images/large/30772-100-0_01.jpg?sw=720&sh=720&sm=fit)

Looking to buy first quality knives.
To answer the question Zwilling Spectrum line, start with 8inch get whatever else you find you need. But going to echo others, if you cant sharpen the Cuisinart, you’re just going to have a $200 dull blade instead of a $50 one.

I just refound my cheap cheap cheap bread knife that I pulled out of my travel trailer a while ago. Works better than my Zwilling bread knife. It maybe cost $5.

Looking for a pepper grinder that doesn’t leave a mess (and won’t fall apart in a year)
We use a rechargeable one by ZWILLING. It was an investment but it has a cap. It’s a blessing and a curse 😆. To get the pepper you need to remove the cap which is somewhat inconvenient - it’s not a one hand operation. However - no mess after you finish grinding the pepper. You can set how fine you want the pepper ground.

What’s the BIFL item that you love but everyone around you thinks is ridiculous?
Second this. Buy them one at a time. And different tools for different jobs. There are nice things about Japanese knives and there are nice things about German knives. I have a 8" Zwilling that is heavy as hell, but it's also durable as hell.

BIFL Table Knives? Something that isn’t huge (looking at you Benchmade table knives) and holds an edge (good steel).
I like Wusthof and Zwilling. I prefer the latter because their Pro line does not have bolsters which makes them easier to hone/sharpen. There are far cheaper ways to get a lifetime worthy set of steak knives, just my preference.

Knife set for Christmas
Man as a career chef i remember when Wusthof were a third of this price. Henckels and Wusthof were the gold standard back in the day in culinary school but that price is absolutely insane. As others have mentioned - a good start is Chef Knife, Boning Knife, Bread Knife, Petty/Pairing knife, Slicer, then from there it depends on what you cook a lot of. Im personally a fan of the Henckels Zwilling Pro line - similar if not better quality than this but the heel/bolster design makes it easier to sharpen If you PM me i can forward you a “buying guide” i wrote out for my brother who was in the same boat.

Knife set for Christmas
Wüsthof make solid knives but they are overpriced in NA. For reference, I can buy the same set n Europe for just under 400USD or 552 CAD after tax. I recommend you don't buy a set but single knives and only add tomtze collection when you feel the need. Mist people never end up with a full set tat way and save money in the long run. Doing that will also improve your knife skills since you will get used to just using the one. So in my opinion start with a chef knife. A decent one shouldn't cost much over 120 CAD. Zwilling Pro or Wüsthof classic are both excellent choices. Also, nobody really likes knife blocks, I hear you. Mounting a magnetic strip solves that problem. Good luck with the knife hunt!

I need new induction cookware I won’t have to throw away in two years.
I have had a decent all steel pan since 20 years and of I get around to scrubbing it, it still looks like new. Same for decent pots - sprung for Zwilling a while back because my ex wanted to, but honestly could’ve used either forever. Non stick pans, I buy as cheaply as possibly. They all just last 3-5 years anyways.

Best kitchen knife set for home cooking?
Honestly, most knife sets are marketing. You’ll only use 3–4 knives regularly. I’d go with a chef’s knife, paring knife, bread knife, and maybe a utility knife if you cook a lot of veg. For German steel, Wüsthof or Zwilling are great. For the Swiss side, Victorinox Santoku knives are a solid pick: they’re light, sharp out of the box, and their Fibrox handles are non-slip even when wet. Not flashy, but practical and perfect for daily use.

What are some actual BIFL kitchen items?
our lists are very similar, except my knives are Mercer (except one chef's knife is Zwilling, that was one of my best thrift store finds!), my Dutch oven is an antique Crescent Ozark, and my dinnerware is just the cheapest real china I found in Costco. No metal trim or printing so it can go through the dishwasher.

The zwilling knife with the yellow handle. An electric grinder for fresh pepper without needing to use a mortar and pestle. A microplane grater. Oh you can go much higher up the quality ladder than Zwilling. Brands like Shun and Wusthof have different offerings that are at least one step above a typical Zwilling knife. Zwilling is a good "entry level" option for really high quality knives, I love my Four Star series knives, but there are definitely more premium options, if you're willing to pay for them.

Important Kitchen Essentials?
Gotta disagree with a lot of this. Especially the $50 knife set. I had one when I started out and while yes it did last for a little while. They become dull very quickly, rusted even with hand washing and wouldn’t take an edge. Ultimately they were just a really crappy knife set. Once you step up a bit in price to say zwilling 4 star or pro you’ll never look back

Important Kitchen Essentials?
For kitchen tools and utensils, I would look for items that are 18/10 stainless steel. This will be the most corrosion resistant. This is important if you plan on putting them in the dishwasher using hot washing or drying cycles. If you want 18/10 and save a bit of money, have a look at **Zwilling's ZWILLING Pro** series. I own the Serving Spoons \[2\], Y-Peeler, Lasagna Turner, Silicone Spatula (aware you're avoiding silicone), Universal Tongs, and Pizza Cutter. If you go to Zwilling's homepage, there should be a pop-up offering you 15% off with e-mail signup; turn off your ad blocker if needed. Additionally, **Henckels' stainless steel** tools are 18/10. I own the Large Whisk, Stainless Steel Slotted Serving Spoon, Stainless Steel Skimming Ladle, and Stainless Steel Soup Ladle. *Don't* buy the Henckels Ice Cream Scoop - I don't think it's 100% stainless steel. On Henckels' homepage, there's a blue button towards the bottom right page for 15% off as well. My top 18/10 tool choice is **Rösle**, but it's difficult to find lower prices. I like their Round Handle series. Their strainers and whisks are particularly good. *Avoid* Rösle peelers - they seem to get bad reviews. There's an option for newsletter signup and saving 10% on their website, but you'd still be paying more (probably) in comparison to Zwilling Pro and Henckels.

Zwilling. Wusthof. Japanese brands for Asian style knives. I bought a cheap ass set when I first got married. They all suck. Not sharp. Not balanced. Bought the above-mentioned knives? A decade and still going strong. Get a sharpener as well.

Knives (home cooking)
I highly recommend doing your research and then going in person to a store to try them out. Ultimately the hand grip and feel are very important to how you use the knife and finding one that works for you can be very different than your expectations from online research. I think I had planned to buy a wusthof and ended up with a zwilling and have been very happy with that for the last 5 years

What’s one thing you bought once and it’s still going strong years later?
Overall, I think stainless steel pots and pans are the best and most versatile. Zwilling (made in Germany) are very good. For skillets, I've found that you don't need SS, Carbon Steel and Cast iron but it's nice to have options. I've realized that the difference between high-end and mid-tier is negligible here. My reco: - Lodge for Cast iron (anything else is a waste of money). - Tramontina (mid/low-tier) and All-Clad (upper-tier) for SS. The difference between tramontina and D3 for clad pans is not noticeable. Copper core is a bit better, but not enough to make a big difference. Choose Tramontina or All Clad D3. Anything else is a waste of money. - As for carbon steel, I have only tested Ikea, DeBuyer, and Matfer. Among all, DeBuyer is the best (IMO). Together with Matfer these are my BIFL. Don't even bother to look at IKEA, they are flimsy and not worthy. I like the commercial series of Kitchen aid. The Stand mixer and Blender are perfect. I also own a Vitamix blender. All of them are BIFL. Do you have a specific utensil that you are looking for?

So is there really no non-stick pan that is safe to use as long as it isn’t chipped?
Hot take that is always downvoted on Reddit but seems to be true in real life: Nothing works as well as non-stick for preventing stick. You can, with enough fat and skill controlling the heat use a well seasoned carbon steel pan and get decent results. But it’s not as good at preventing stick as non-stick. It is true that non-stick only lasts a few years and has unknown health implications but strictly speaking about non-stick qualities, its superior. I would give it a shot with carbon steel because carbon steel is awesome for other things. Just temper your expectations in terms of non-stick qualities vs a non-stick pan. There’s no BIFL non-stick pan, but Zwilling makes a good one.

Where to buy stainless cooking utensils?
**Rösle** is a great brand. They use 18/10 stainless steel which is more corrosion resistant than 18/8 or 18/0. The Round Handle series tools have watertight handles and hanging rings. But I would avoid their peelers; I think the designs are sub-optimal, hence the bad reviews. Zwilling has a line called **Zwilling Pro Tools** which is also 18/10 stainless.

Hello BiFL! I'm looking for ideas to put on a wedding registry! (Canada)
I've been married for almost 15 years, and we still use a few things we got for our wedding daily. The Zwilling knife set and stainless steel pots and pans, as well as the old Pyrex baking dishes and liquid measuring cups. The 18/10 stainless silverware and all of the metal baking pans are still going strong as well. Surprisingly, the Walmart towels we bought for our first apartment are also all doing well. Most things broke or stopped working at the 7-10 year mark. All the small appliances, the non-stick pans, the glassware, and even the salad spinner. The Pfalztgraff dishes did pretty well until we had kids, and then those were replaced with Corelle dishes and Picardi glasses.
View on Redditopen_in_new - #52Mar 7, 2025
Buy your PYREX measuring cups from thrift stores if you want them last a lifetime.
Of note, OXO glassware/bakeware and a lot of glassware from Zwilling is borosilicate and not soda lime glass. There are many smaller makers who also offer borosilicate bakeware/glassware. It is more prone to chipping and shattering than soda lime glass, but unlike soda lime glass, it doesn't 'explode' when exposed to sudden temperature changes.

Any of you happy with your electric kettles with custom temp settings?
We got the OXO Adjustable Temperature Kettle two years ago and are really happy with it. The only thing that annoys me a tad is that it's hard to completely empty it. Very minor complaint, though. It heats up quickly, won't ruin the counter if you set it there (rather than on the base directly after heating), and it looks pretty decent. My sister got a Zwilling. The kettle is stainless steel rather than glass. I think it looks a little nicer on the counter, and it can easily be fully emptied. She has been really happy with it.

What brands do you trust to always deliver a high quality product?
For kitchenware, I’ve started buying exclusively from the Zwilling group of brands- Zwilling, Henkels, Staub, Miyabi. Quality is incredible. Price is slightly premium but they always have great sales. And one time I took apart the filter basket on my coffee to do a deep cleaning and accidentally dropped a spring and small rubber gasket down the sink. Stopped by the Zwilling store and asked if it was possible to order those pieces, and they just opened up a brand new one in the store and pulled out the filter basket and handed it to me, no questions asked.

A list of BIFL not made in the USA
Agreed that WMF makes decent cutlery, as well as some utensils, but besides those, they're not BIFL. Zwilling does it (far) better imo. It's not very obvious for the average consumer that DeMeyere is part of Zwilling, so I pointed it out specifically. SEB also owns WMF, Tefal, and Krups, just to name a few. Tefal and Krups are definitely not BIFL I think. I just eplied to your comment because it listed WMF and so did the OP. Don't worry about it, we're all here to learn and share our experiences! It's nothing personal :)

A list of BIFL not made in the USA
WMF does everything, not just pans. and I kind of have Demeyere covered, as it is part of the Zwilling group (like Staub). Mostly though: feel free to add it to the thread in a nice, constructive way. Most of us are posting brand names in between doing other, more important things in our lives. There will be small errors, and missing foot notes.

What brand / type of pots & pans are worth investing in as a young adult?
I did something similar at age 30. I bought an All Clad D5 set at Macys for under $500 with a bunch of discounts. I actually wish I bought Demeyere instead to avoid the rivets. My knives are a mix of Henckel Pro for me and Wushof Ikon for Mrs (smaller handle). I also have a nice Japanese gyuto but don't love the handle for sustained use.

Looking for dishwasher safe steak knives
Zwilling / Henckels serrated stamped stainless steel steak knives have been wonderful for me for two decades or so. Never had an issue with them in a dishwasher since there’s no wood and they’re all one piece of metal since they’re a stamped design. Smaller to grip than knives with traditional wood grips, but I find them quite controllable and relatively versatile for serrated knives. Took me a bit of time to remember what they were - went through 23 pages of knives on Walmart’s website then ended up as the second search result for me on Amazon, coincidentally on sale.
