Brands That Used to Be BIFL — But Aren't Anymore?
IKEA. My Expedit and older Kallaxes will prevail. My new Billy, not so much.

What is your most unintentional BIFL item?
Original Ikea Kallax bookcases that i use for my records. They've been fully loaded with records for over 16 years now and they have zero sign of any warping or bending, even after serval cross country moves. I have a few of the newer ones that seem just as sturdy but those are only a few years old so time will tell on those.

Do you think BIFL is actually cost effective?
BIFL is taking the long range view. Only buy stuff you actually need. Re IKEA: I just helped my friend shop for a piece of furniture to go behind her couch that would corral all the stuff that comes in from outside (keys, bags, coats) she fought hard against the kallax unit but we got it and she loves it. Nothing else on the market came close to the exact dimensions she needed and customization to meet her needs. I have nine kallax units, the oldest is 15 years old, and they are champs.

The difference between generations…
You know, I'll fight you on the Ikea stuff. Their solid wood items are pretty good. The Kalax line is still cheap, but dang it is handy.

The difference between generations…
I also want to say I’ve had a kallax for 16 years. It’s scraped up from moving it to 5 different houses in that time but it is structurally bulletproof.

The difference between generations…
My multiple Kallax units have all survived 5 moves in 8 years, with the only damage being a few threaded screws - which I was able to replace for free at any IKEA store. I’ve had them in so many combinations and your story has given me hope that there’s many more years to come. My bedside tables only made it through one move, but they were cheap and only bought because I needed something narrow at the time - as you rightly said, quality varies with price!

I have one of the old Expedit shelving systems, it’s over 20 years old. Their stuff isn’t usually BIFL quality though, definitely not any of the upholstered furniture.
