Printer Tragedy - yes I've searched the sub - Hoping for specific advice
Color is never cheap Laser color is not good quality. Have you seen what it looks like? Brothers are decent printers. But the consumables are still expensive. Toners $80 for 3k black and white pages CDW is their all in one model, they fax/photocopy/scan https://www.brother-usa.com/products/hll3220cdw#accessories

Recommend me a printer/scanner
Agree with this advice, I went down the route of Brother laser colour printer (HL-L3220CDW) and a Canon USB C flatbed scanner. The scanner was $81, the printer $250, and I am almost daily glad I purchased them. I've had Brother laser printers before and they are near indestructible. I've done a lot of printing from this one actually and still haven't needed to replace the toners. The scanner is fine. I prefer it separate to the printer because I can set it up right next to my computer for scanning sessions (so I can see what I'm scanning) instead of walking back and forth between printer and computer. It's pretty compact so it can then be tucked away between sessions. No idea about Linux compatibility, sorry.

All Hail My Printer - She turns 13 this year
I have a Brother HL-L3230CDW which does and it's pretty much the same in reliability. I'm not sure if you'd call it super cheap though. The monochrome laser printers can be had for under $100, but color laser printers start in the $300-400 range. I was lucky to get mine on sale for $280. Also you need to consider the size of color laser printers. The 3230 weighs 45 pounds.

Is this the right printer?
I have that 3220 with the scanner and it’s been solid. I did try generic toner with it, but preferred the quality of the Brother toner for my needs to be honest. But it’s a solid laser printer.
