Moccamaster. I’m not sure what I’m doing wrong.
That’s awesome. I’ve had the same Gaggia Classic Pro for a decade now, but yeah, unless someone corrects me, I’d apply the same principles here. Keep all the other variables the same and adjust grind size until you get the taste you want. Under extracted: grind finer. Over extracted: grind coarser.

Good affordable espresso makers
This is definitely the answer for your specific situation. You could also get a milk frother and between the two you can whip up some delicious lattes, cappucinos, etc. If you were more of a coffee enthusiast, I'd say bump your budget up and get a refurbished Gaggia Classic Pro. They're customizable, solid tanks that make good espresso and have a steaming wand. I bought my son one a few years ago and he uses it every day. The espresso he brews is delicious.

Good affordable espresso makers
Came here to say this. Decent machines start in the 300-400 range. Maybe see if you can pickup a used gaggia classic on FB market place? Machines that retail for $200 just are not worth it. Better off with espresso or getting a good pour over setup.

Good affordable espresso makers
Plenty of espresso machines are BIFL.. For 200 you might be able to grab a used Gaggia Classic. Plenty of 20-30 year old examples pop up on eBay, every part can be replaced if it breaks, and capable of producing espresso the quality of machines 10x its price. Perfect machine if you like to repair/tinker. Can upgrade the machine with a PID too. However, no good without a decent grinder. Something like a Eureka Mignon would last longer than everyone commenting here. Avoid models without 3 way solenoid valve (2015-2018 I think). And avoid the coated boilers, as they are known to flake.

What’s a BIFL thing you bought and now swear by?
My Gaggia Classic is a 1996 model and still works amazingly well. Little bit of maintenance and it pulls great shots every time

Which coffee machine is better for home use: DeLonghi ECAM 450.55 S Eletta Explore or PHILIPS Series 5500 LatteGo EP5547/90?
If you really want a quality coffee machine then the absolute cheapest for an espresso machine is a gaggia classic pro. However, I cannot overstate this next part. Number one for producing good coffee is the coffee itself. Number two is the grinder, last most important part of this is the espresso machine. Don’t buy any delonghi products. I would recommend the espresso sub for this question. However they get snobby. Absolute barebones but it for life espresso machine is the gaggia classic pro. The downside for the gaggia classic pro is that it can take a while between shots to reheat. So if you’re getting multiple drinks out every morning then you need to get a heat exchange espresso machine or a dual boiler. If you have time to kill in the morning then the gaggia will be just fine. A grade above that would be a breville barista but it isn’t buy it for life. I would honestly call whole latte love and get their input. They are very helpful. I have a eureka mignon facile and a Bezzera bz 13 that should last for a super long time.

Looking for a coffee machine that lasts forever
If you're looking for espresso, gaggia classic. Super simple machine, basically just a boiler and a pump. If you're crafty there are lots of mods you can make to it too

Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?
There are several BIFL options when it comes to coffee. They all depend on your coffee taste expectations and your budget. Here's a list of options: * Espresso - Gaggia Classic Pro, Rancillio Silvia, Lelit Bianca, Profitec pro 600 * Stovetop - Bialetti Moka lavazza * French press - there's a plethora of options out there, bodum being the classic * Pour over - V60, Chemex, Melitta, Kalitta. most of these require filters * Drip - It seems everyone here is a fan of the Moccamaster * Travel - Aeropress, wacaco (many options there) I've been using my Gaggia classic for about 7 yrs. Some parts have been fixed, but they are widely as well as tutorials. It's a simple machine that will last forever if cared for.

Burr Grinder Recommendations
Gaggia MDF is fairly basic; [list price is $170](https://www.gaggia-na.com/products/gaggia-mdf-coffee-grinder-9f22842f-d5de-4d43-9fe2-e0ffeed93f60). Build is more plastic than the Gaggia espresso makers, but quality on my old one is quite good.

Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?
Or for a cheaper alternative, the Gaggia Classic. My 2002 model is still going strong!

Recommendations for coffee machine - single serve?
I have the gaggia Espresso predecessor to the Classic from 1992. Internally just 2 parts have changed since then in the new models. Works like a dream . And with a 9bar spring inside , a 100 bucks manual grinder and good beans I have made better coffee than Faema s . Gaggia classics are a tank.

Recommendations for coffee machine - single serve?
We have a Gaggia classic pro espresso maker. We have had it for at least 4 years. We drink at least three cups a day sometimes five. Always Americano. I've tried all the coffee makers. Drip, pour over, mokapot, aeropress, French press, and I have probably forgotten something. I always come back to the espresso machine to make an Americano. It is simply the best cup of coffee I've ever had, whether I made myself or I have bought it at a coffee shop. In the last 4 years we have used the Gaggia constantly and have had zero problems with it. I understand that if it does have problems it is repairable by me.

What is an espresso machine that is built to last?
Solid pick with the Gaggia definitely one of those machines that can go the distance. I’ve been eyeing it too for home use. I’ve also been using the OutIn Nano when I’m on the go or don’t feel like setting everything up. Obviously not a full replacement, but it’s surprisingly reliable and nice to have around as a portable option.

Best Coffee machines recommendation?
Hario V60 for pour over Aeropress for immersion brewing. Gaggia Classic, or Rancilio Silvia for espresso Moccamaster or Sage/Breville precision brewer for drip.

You’re gonna get a million responses. I suggest you start with a James Hoffman video and determine your budget. He has solid videos across various price points and highlights the pros/cons for each. I ended up going with a Gaggia Classic Pro that I’ve since modded, and a Niche Zero grinder. I may upgrade the machine in the future but I bought the grinder with the intention of not replacing it in the future. Other espresso machines are more automatic in nature but I like to tinker.

Looking for espresso machine
Yep. I know multiple people who have abused their Gaggia Classics daily for well over a decade and they’re still going strong with no more than an o-ring swap from time to time. I’m well over 1000 shots pulled on mine and it’s like it’s brand new.

Looking for espresso machine
We love our Gaggia Classic. It was a little spendy, but it’s amazing. It stops us from buying coffees all the time, and I work from home a lot of days. So we splurged. For grinders we have a Baratza encore grinder. We do regular upkeep and maintenance and it’s been going strong for a good 6 years. They also have replacement parts you can easily get to repair parts yourself. We keep up maintenance and it pays off.

Looking for espresso machine
This is a deep hole to go into. So the recommendation pre-COVID would be a Rancilio Silvia or Gaggia Classic. Both are workhorses, very repairable, and are sort of the most basic espresso machines you can get for life. The Gaggia Classic is a more "modern" and compact machine. Post-COVID, the prices for these machines have gone up a lot, though in Europe you can get them used for decent. More recently, there have been significant mods and updates to the machines that push them into the £1k category, so the recommendations get more complicated. There is a lot more you can say, but I think the most basic recommendation would be to start with a used Silvia or Classic machine from the pre-2008 era.

It depends how much you want to work and how much money you have. Do you want to just press a button or tamp the beans yourself? I started with a Gaggia Classic. The thing I learned is the grinder makes a huge difference. If you can get the beans to be a very fine grind it will slow the flow of water and make great espresso. Now I use a Lelit Elizabeth and a Baratza grinder. Love them and not too pricey.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
For espresso you can’t get more bulletproof than a gaggia classic. Grinder probably a little less bifl but baratza esp is good for the money and all the parts are available online for replacing. Just make sure you do regular maintenance on both and you’ll be making high quality espresso for years to come.
