What brands/products do you AVOID because of their poor longevity?
strongly disagree with gaming chairs. i have about 10 Herman millers from a business i own. we have had them for over 10 years. incredible longevity. all still going. aerons and embodys. - i would ditch any Simple Human product with a sensor - any audio device made by apple - any console gaming controller. i have to install my own sticks on them even if they are new - samsung refrigerators, samsung is generally sus to me - agree anything that razr makes - any shoe with a non rubber midsole, any nb shoe with encap - any non rosle can opener lol - kenmore - any type of oscilating fan (except the dyson) - aiaia headphones or any of their accessories - any gaming headset priced below $400msrp. - wolf appliances - lg split ac units i could go ooon

What’s a purchase that’s not fun, not flashy but now you swear by it?
Probably a common answer, but a good office chair. Got an Aeron 4 years back and pretty much every other seat since have felt uncomfortable in comparison. Also, I have sat in this chair for several hours every single day since I got it, and it is showing no signs of wear at all.

Which affordable brand(s) of chair happens to be moderately similar in structure/angles to Herman Miller? Or if such a thing does not exist, what affordable alternative brand(s) has the best ergonomics among the affordable brands?
You might want to consider a used HM chair. I just replaced the cartridge in my 30YO Aeron chair and it’s good as new. I’ve never seen anything else in the category hold up with that level of durability.

What is the best high-end home office chair?
I thought I'd hate the Aeron based on looks and people's thoughts on the flared up sides since I sit cross legged a lot. Tried one out in a store and it was heavenly. I was shocked a mesh chair could be so comfortable. So I'd say check them out in a store if you can, or from someone on Facebook marketplace.

What is the best high-end home office chair?
Used Aeron. Just do a bit of research. Remember when these were first sold, they had a rep ensure that each chair was fitted and adjusted to the end user, and ensure the correct size

What is your current BIFL item you recommend to everyone?
Herman Miller Embody if you work from home and sit +8h a day. I previously worked on Ikea Markus and this chair was great, but for me it was not enough and after 8-10 hour sessions my back hurt. So if you work remotely and sit +8h a day, I really recommend Embody/Aeron. I also did a full review between [Herman Miller Embody vs Aeron](https://goodquality.io/blog/herman-miller-aeron-vs-embody)

stepdad’s son wrecked my setup. need BIFL replacement under $1k
Herman Miller Aeron. I got one of those about a year ago and I do not plan on ever getting another chair. Probably the best desk chair I've ever sat in.

Honest question, is the kid going to be able to do it again? Your best bet is to look on Craigslist or Facebook marketplace for a used Herman Miller Aeron. When offices close down you can usually find them for sale under 1k. They're usually in decent condition and last a long time.

Looking for a mesh office chair to help with back pain
This. I've easily spent >12 hours per day at the computer for many decades, and I acquired an Aeron specifically to address chronic back pain \~2010, and my back pain was completely gone within a few days. It was as if a switch had been flipped. I'm still using that same chair today. Bought a second one for my wife when she transitioned to WFH a few years ago, and the quality is still there.

Mesh office chair vs. cushion chair? anyone tested them both?
I had a high end cushion before: at first it's comfortable if the chair support you well. They also look better compared to mesh. But over time the cushions get compressed and you don't realise it until you start to experience shoulder and back ache. I then switched to a Herman Miller Mira: the first two weeks were really uncomfortable: I experienced even more pain compared to the cushion chair: hamstrings, shoulders, lower and upper back everything was sore after an hour. I almost wanted to return it when suddenly it became the most comfortable chair I ever had. It turned out that I adjusted my sitting position to compensate for the cushions that started to fail (leg under my bum, slouching etc :-)), which in turn lead to poor posture. With the HM you need to have a proper ergonomic position and it may be the first time ever you sit like that. It will be uncomfortable but after that you can have full day sessions without any pain or tiredness. Five years later the mesh is still as supportive as the first day I got it. Other benefits I found of a mesh chair: much easier to clean and more comfortable during warm or colder weather.
