Need a quality coffee maker
A BIFL coffee machine doesn’t have to be expensive, but some will be. What sort of machine is the Walmart one? I can explain a few of the terms you have seen but if you just want a recommendation for an awesome coffee maker that will last longer than you will, skip right to the bottom. The reason you get questions about “French press”, “drip coffee”, “espresso” etc. is because asking for a recommendation for a “coffee maker” is a bit like asking for a recommendation for a “food cooker”; it could mean a grill or a convection oven or an air fryer or a big green egg or a microwave or a camping stove. They’ll all do the same thing (cook food), but they’ll all do it slightly differently. So there are six basic types of coffee maker people tend to use at home if we don’t include Nespresso-type pod things (and we don’t; they’re not very good, horrible for the environment and *definitely* not BIFL). **Pour over coffee makers** are jugs that hold a filter; coffee grounds go into the filter, and hot water pours over the coffee grounds giving you coffee. Pretty much foolproof. You need filters for them. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £25. **French presses** (we call them **cafetières** in England) are glass beakers with a plunger and a wire mesh. You steep coffee in water, push the plunger down, and you’ll have some coffee. Easy to use. Easy to maintain. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £30. **Aeropress** is almost like a combination of the first two. A plastic cylinder holds coffee and hot water. Push a plunger down into it applies pressure to brew the coffee. Easy to use, easy to maintain. Was only invented in 2005 so can’t say if it’s BIFL yet. There are silicone seals etc that Inimagine would need to be replaced. The glass version, Aeropress premium is £150. **Drip coffee makers** are basically the same as pour-over coffee makers but they will heat water, keep coffee warm etc. Good ones *can* be BIFL but require some maintenance. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will cost about £250. **Moka pots** are traditional little metal pots you can use on a stovetop to make espresso. Easy to maintain. Definitely BIFL. A more-or-less top-of-the-range one will probably cost you no more than £60. **Espresso machines** are the big expensive looking thing ms you’ll typically see baristas using in coffee shops. They force hot water through very finely-ground coffee at high pressure creating very rich coffee. There’s a fair bit of knowledge required to work them. Require regular maintenance. Lots of paraphernalia too. Can be BIFL. There are machines available for more than £20k so top-of-the-range is not really relevant here but superb machines for home use are about £600. You’ll also need a superb coffee grinder though. Ideally, you would know what type of coffee you currently make and what type of coffee you like to drink for a start. SAFE alternative to Bunn MyCafe Coffee Maker?
Professional coffee person and amateur opinion -haver here: you want a Technivorm Moccamaster. There are cheaper options that are also good, but this is BIFL, and the Moccamaster is built to last, easily repairable, and makes superior coffee to most brewers. There are ~ 20 brewers certified by the Specialty Coffee Association as meeting their strict standards and about 1/3 of those are Technivorm models.

Thank you BIFL Community, Looking Forward to Great Tasting Coffee for a Looooong Time!
I’ve had mine for more than a year! For set and forget coffee it makes even crappy beans great. My grinder is awful though. I didn’t want to spend a fortune on a grinder and now I get to buy twice :’) (the OXO Conical Burr grinder sucks for anyone looking. It constantly clogs and I have to disassemble or shake it out or vacuum it to resolve.)

Looking for a coffee machine that lasts forever
If you make single cups of coffee, try a Clever coffee brewer. Just insert a filter, add coffee and water right off boil, stir, steep 2-3 mins, and then place on a cup to release the coffee. Rinse out and repeat. So easy. A coffee scale helps to get ratios right and an electric kettle is recommended. But overall very simple setup that lasts forever. Similar to a V60 pourover, but even easier. If you're looking for making larger pots of coffee, go with other recommendations here, like the Moccamaster.

Looking for a coffee machine that lasts forever
If you’re looking for something that truly lasts, go for Technivorm Moccamaster or Breville Precision Brewer. Both have metal internals, easy to fix if something breaks, and parts are available for years. I’ve had the Moccamaster for 5+ years — no issues, just regular descaling.

Looking for a coffee machine that lasts forever
We're also extremely satisfied with our Moccamaster. I strongly recommend getting an RO system and only filling it from that. It greatly decreases the need to descale and clean the machine. We have [this one from APEC Water Systems](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00I0ZGOZM) hooked up to our fridge, which is one of those Samsung ones with the water pitcher in the door. For some reason it was really hard to find this info: the right stuff for cleaning it is the Urnex [descaler](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B004L8V966) and [espresso machine cleaning powder](https://www.amazon.com/dp/B001418KNS?ref_=ppx_hzsearch_conn_dt_b_fed_asin_title_1) (the latter of which is, as I understand it, basically dishwasher detergent).

Best coffee maker? Is there anything new in 2025?
Id like to throw my setup into the hat. Espresso - ecm synchronika ii, eureka libra ap grinder. Drip - technivorm moccamaster (i have the one with the insulated carafe that’s glass lined. Inuse a df 64 as my grinder for coffee. I also have a capresso bur grinder that is semi retired/backup. Its lasted about 10 years, and still kicking. I used it every day. Pour over chemex. Melita makes some decent ones too but the chemex is all glass which i like.

What are some European BIFL items (mainly clothing)
Technivorm moccamaster coffee mavhine… this is made in Netherlands. But I assume it is also available in the USA too. It’s an awesome BIFL purchase though.

What are some European BIFL items (mainly clothing)
Technivorm Moccamaster. Handmade Dutch and available across Europe. Owned one for many years and have disassembled them in engineering class to marvel at their purely mechanical and thermal components. Not a circuit board in sight. Plus they make a damn tasty coffee.

Name your top 5 BIFL items
1) Gaggia Espresso machine - for when I'm feeling a fancy coffee 2)moccammaster - for the mornings to brew coffee for the wife and I 3) Wahl magic clips for keeping my beard trimmed and neat 4) a nice set of stainless steel pans 5) Vintage Rolex watch - this is not a necessity but it really helps with my outfits for work. And with proper care and service will run for another 25 years

Looking for coffee maker recommendations please!
We have both and the Bonavita is a very close second to the mocha master. Really about the only variation is the Technivorm disperses hot water at 197°F 100% of the time which is ideal for perfect coffee. The Bonavita has a slut variation from time to time maybe 195° to 200° which is no big deal. Just saying. I prefer the mocha master, but the Bonavita is about half the price.

Drip Coffee Maker - Time for a new one
It doesnt fit all of your requirements, but does tick a lot of boxes - Technivorm Moccamaster. I would buy another one tomorrow if mine crapped out. Which it wont since it is a truly BIFL item, and is easily repairable.

Can y’all help me pick a coffee maker?
Neither. Being smart-frugal should point you in the direction of anything but a pod-coffee machine. Cost per cup is obscenely higher than a regular drip machine using loose coffee (either ground or whole bean that you grind yourself). You are in the "Buy it for life" group, which looks at spending more upfront (or buying used) to get a quality made item. This many times saves in the long run with longevity of the product. The usually answer for drip coffee maker is picking up a Technivorm Moccamaster, which will last decades with minor maintenance and has parts availability. But if you are looking at staying on the cheap end of things, why don't you consider picking up a french press?

Coffee machine for life? (or at least a few years)
I got a Technivorm Moccamaster used on Craigslist in 2017. Still makes incredible coffee. The gal I got it from took good care of it, told me to descale it after each box of filters, and it’s still going strong. They have replaceable parts if anything goes wrong and it’s a very simple machine, I consider it BIFL.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
Ha, me too. I got the stainless steel and have since realized I would prefer one of the colors and have also realized I may not get to replace this machine. I wish I got commission. Numerous guests have had coffee at my house and gone out and bought their own MoccaMaster. I got mine after having coffee from one at a friend's house.

What home coffee essentials have held up and lasted you over time?
Not what you’re looking for, but when it comes to drip coffee makers the Techni Vorm Moccamaster is a buy it for life item. Extremely well built, and they sell service parts for repair instead of replacement should anything go wrong in the future. It sits on my counter next to my Dualit toaster which I bought for the same reason - build quality and serviceability
