Best walking shoes for men: which ones do you recommend?
I was just coming in to suggest a pair of the Altra Lone Peaks- I bought a pair for hikes and country walks in the UK, and I really love them. Zero break-in period, comfortable to wear, and they were the rare pair of shoes where I've experienced zero shin splints or plantar fasciitis-type issues. They really are a good pair of shoes.

What's everyone's go-to sneaker?
Altra lone peak. Super comfortable, light and grippy. Made for trail running but amazing for every day use and travel (or anywhere you do a ton of walking)

Best wide shoes for heavy folks (8+ hours standing)
Same here, they’ve been the only brand I’ve worn for the last 8 years. Lone Peak and the Timp are my go-to’s, but they also have some full cushion models like Hoka’s.

Check out the ALTRA brand. Very wide toe box and recommended by many long distance hikers. A bit pricey, but since I've been wearing them every day most of my foot issues have resolved. I wear the Lone Peak model.

Best hiking boots for men - Suggestions needed.
If you're looking for true BIFL, think resolable high-quality leather construction, such as White's or Nick's. That's what wildland firefighters wear, for example, because they can take a tremendous amount of punishment. For less expensive versions of the same philosophy, take a look at Jim Green. If you're looking for durable and good for hiking, but not resolable, take a look at Salewa hiking shoes. The last pair I had were well-constructed and used a hard rubber sole that lasts a lot longer than the soft rubber used in a lot of trail running shoes. If you're looking for the best hiking experience and aren't actually worried about BIFL, check out Altra Lone Peaks. No trail runners are BIFL since they use foams and rubbers that degrade pretty quickly, but there's a reason they're popular with through hikers. They're the most comfortable and nimble.

Best simple, not overly-engineered shoe for walking 12k steps/day?
My first thought was Hoka, but those are pretty over-engineered? And really, so much depends on your foot shape, arch height, and gait that you really want to go to a running or hiking store and get fitted for something in person, IMHO. That being said, I have a pair of Altra Lone Peaks that I really like- they have a big, wide toe box so my toes can spread as I walk, and they've been great on shorter (5-12k) hikes and walks. I've seen some reviewers say that the newer models aren't as good, but mine have been a nice, no break-in required alternative to regular hiking boots. They don't have a *ton* of cushion, though, so if you need more foot support, you may do better with something else.
