Jackets for cycling and walking in mild, rainy and cold-ish weather?
I’ve been using a Patagonia Torrentshell 3L. Partner it with Patagonia’s Better Sweater for when it gets cold and I’m good. Have had this combo since 2022 for fall/spring walks/hikes and just going around town. When it gets to 0° and bellow, I just layer underneath. For reference or what type of weather we get, I live in Toronto, Canada.

Best winter jackets?
You need 2 coats. A synthetic puffer with a Goretex jacket (ex: Patagonia Nanopuff jacket + Torrentshell). Also a down parka: my favorite is Feathered Friends. For you the Ellia Women's Down Jacket which is surprisingly on sale.

What's a good winter jacket that will last me a long time?
I have a paragonia torrentshell. It's lovely and holds up great. I'm an avid backpacker and use it on the trail but it's also nice enough to wear to the office. It's just a rain proof shell, and I use layers under. I prefer the layers to a bulky jacket, because without the bulk and liner it's a 4 season jacket. The layers keep me warmer as well.

Best Workwear Brand?
Like you I've been on a hunt for the "best" (or, best for me) work wear pants. After burning through many, many pairs of Weatherproof Vintage pants from Costco, I decided it was time to spend more and experiment, without breaking the bank on Japanese denim or in 1620 work clothes. I bought one pair from many brands I thought were affordable. Here's my ranking from best to worst. 1. Patagonia (the non-stretch version). This is heavy, heavy duck cloth. The fit in the waist can be tight because of the zero stretch. The pants take a beating with sweat, sawdust, paint, and other crap but they feel and move and breathe like new, and have protected me from lots of sharp things. I've washed them only a handful of times. The aesthetic can be kind of funny with the pocket design and zero taper in the ankles. 2. Dickies. The double knee pants. These both feel and look good. They're lighter while still being tough. They age nicely. Great pants. They're a touch long compared to other brands, so sometimes I roll them, but then they catch sawdust. Sometimes the crotch rides up when sitting. 3. Duluth. Maybe too heavy weight? I'm uncomfortable wearing these in warmer weather because they're just so heavy. In the winter I love them. The pocket design is also a little too wide, like things can fall out when working horizontal or if your likes are a bit elevated. 4. Carhartt. Not a fan so far. The sizing seems literally random. With a tool belt, they fall down a lot, even with a regular belt. They're flimsy. The pockets are frayed and roughed up from my multi tool. Best denim: Prison Blues. Without getting into any ethics or political debates, I'll just say that the denim is super high quality, 14.5ozs, and really well built pants. They can seem quite wide fitting, but the young kids tell me that's the style these days.

What purchase changed your habit?
I’m like you and I like the Patagonia Torrentshell because I don’t overheat when I wear it. I can’t speak to many of these others but this has been a great lightweight option for me. At first I didn’t like how barebones it felt then I began to understand the tradeoff for less weight.

NYT just put out a list of their BIFL picks
> What's the best thing on the list? TBH it's kind of an odd list, but probably the cookware. * Good multi-ply cookware will last a lifetime (or two) and is a very worthwhile investment. Though I'd question if the Allclad D3 is really the best-value BIFL pick; my whole set of Cuisinart Multiclad Pro that costs about as much today as the pot alone from All Clad. I have absolutely no complaints about the Cuisinart set a decade+ later (except don't get so cocky that you even use them to hammer nails like I did), despite being much cheaper. * Personally I hate the dutch oven form factor, but I can't argue with Le Creuset being literally BIFL. My dad still uses one that was a wedding gift for *his* mother, who passed away a few years ago. Literally BIFL. Although, the enamel did wear though in a few spots eventually, but it's still usable. > What's the worst? * Watering cans are just about the *least* important BIFL item, and $100 for a watering can is positively crazy. You can spend $10 and get one that will also last a lifetime. * $570 down comforter?! No thanks, hardy wool blankets over down-filled comforters -- they regulate temperature better, and are easier to care for too. Only downside if you have a cat is that they will shamelessly steal your blanket. * Waxed cotton rain coat that doesn't even come with a hook? Nope nope nope, you'll take my Patagonia Torrentshell from my cold, dead hands. * Uh, the last 2 items. BIFL is really not the main quality one looks for there...

Rain jacket? Upgrade time
I’d pick up a Patagonia Torrentshell, there just isn’t a better jacket. If you’re on a budget, REI (in the US), and MEC (in Canada) have house branded options that are 20-30% less and almost as good.
