I had a Patagonia torrentshell and returned and found the fjallraven wax line(g5000 I think? It was $50 more than the Patagonia but won’t ever delaminate) and was way happier.

This is what I have. Works great. I have a photo of me after wearing it outside during a category 5 super typhoon. Winds over 125 mph. My pants were soaked. Everything under the Patagonia was dry. After surviving the typhoon I give the Patagonia torrent shell a 10/10.

If you are active in your jacket, you will get humid, whatever the price point you choose for your jacket. For light walking in the city, a 50$ Columbia jacket will get the job done, really. I read good things about the Patagonia Torrentshell 3L… No need to invest in a 400$+ jacket unless you wish to flex that Arc’teryx… When hiking or any strenuous activity, you will get wet from the inside, no matter what, so get any decent jacket and focus on bringing a dry shirt and socks to change into at the end of your activity. Been hiking for 30+ years.

Chiming in on the Patagonia torrentshell train. I think rei might actually have them in sale right now (no affiliation and hopefully not breaking any rules). The arcteryx gortex stuff (eg Beta AR) is also outstanding but pricy. Also note that the waterproof breathable fabrics (eg gortex) do not naturally repel water the same way that a plastic jacket does. They have a waterproof breathable membrane with a fabric on top and sometimes below. The fabric on top is coated to repel water....but that coating is to preserve breathability when it's wet...not to keep you dry. When that coating wears or gets dirty it won't repel water and the material will appear that it's soaking through. But the membrane underneath is still intact and protecting you but it just looks like it's soaking through. You can restore the water repellant coating by washing and drying the jacket on high heat or by reapplying a coating. In all cases follow manufacturers instructions.

Gore-Tex and Patagonia torrentshell jackets are pretty solid. If you have the money, look into a 3 layer rain jacket. Most companies under $100 only offer 1-2 layer jackets. The 3 layer option helps wick away any moisture that does make it through. Google can explain it better, but is worth the extra money.

What’s one item you bought that way outperformed its price?
Mine is their torrentshell I think it’s called? No filling. Super durable. Highly recommend. I think Patagonia has a program where they will mend your items for free? Might be worth looking into.
