Help me choose a winter jacket: Filson Pateros vs Filson Waxed Down vs Patagonia Downdrift vs Patagonia Tres 3-in-1
Down jackets like the first three aren't particularly BIFL since down filling slowly falls out over time with frequent use and the shells aren't made of robust material, so they'll rip and snag easily. Also, down jackets will no longer insulate when wet, so they're not ideal when there's heavy precipitation. The 3-in-1 is easily the best out of the four for your needs. At least on paper.

Help me choose a winter jacket: Filson Pateros vs Filson Waxed Down vs Patagonia Downdrift vs Patagonia Tres 3-in-1
I have the 3-1 parka and it works well for Minnesota winters.

Warmest, most durable parka?
I ended up getting the Patagonia 3-in-1 parka, a size larger than usual, so I can stuff another layer or two underneath. Someone made a point about the sizing and many of the jackets didn't fit my petite frame. I also went with the layers option. One of these layers I get a heated vest and battery pack which I use for really cold days. Pretty happy with it so far.

Alternatives to Filson
Patagonia treats its workers well. Not waxed canvas but I’m coming up on 10 years with their 3 in 1 parka and it’s been great. I’m a big filson fan btw

Patagonia Tres 3 in 1 vs. North Face Cryos Parka for Women
Both are solid choices but honestly I'd lean towards the North Face for your needs - that 800 fill is gonna make a noticeable difference when you're standing around in the cold with kids, and 2017 isn't that old for a quality parka The price difference is steep though, so if budget's tight the Patagonia will definitely do the job

Looking for a BIFL Winter Jacket (Men's)
I just bought the Patagonia three in one parka and I’m quite satisfied. And they have a lifetime warranty.

Best winter jackets that are worth the price
Just guessing based on your username that you're a female. Check out Patagonia's Tres 3-in-1 Parka. It's longer, and you can wear the shell alone, the liner alone, or both for extra warmth. Waterproof shell and insulated.

Warmest, most durable parka?
I’m a very cold, petite woman as well. I wear base layers constantly indoors in the winter under my clothes. I sometimes have to get into a hot shower to warm up my body. I get so cold that I literally hurt. Just telling you to give you the idea that I totally get where you are coming from. I have a Patagonia tres 3 in 1. I thinks it’s about 3 years old. The only thing I’m meh about is the hood isn’t lined. But the hood is large and very easily fits over a hat, and it blocks wind well for me. Do not make my mistake and get it so it “fits”, I wish I had one size larger. Other than that I’m happy with it. The pockets are cozy. It’s long. It blocks wind well. It’s sturdy, I have a giant dog who jumps on me and ruins everything and it’s held up just fine. I can easily fit a huge cozy scarf. It keeps me dry when it’s rainy outside. It’s not the most stylish, but since it’s a $600 coat I’d rather it not look dated within a year anyway. There are some colors for only $350 on Patagonia’s website right now.

Patagonia vs TNF Parka
I have Patagonia’s 3-1 jacket that has a down insert. Bought it from an outlet and it works great. (I also have circulation issues…)
