The Mackinaw Wool Cruiser was patented in 1914 for men working long days surveying timber stands in Pacific Northwest forests. Built from dense Mackinaw Wool, it blocks wind, sheds snow, and stays warm even when wet. The Cruiser has been a trusted favorite for over a century because the design just plain works. As it has evolved, changes have been subtle. This special-release jacket reflects the design of a 1948 Cruiser in our archive. Each of the four front cargo pockets are individually cut and sewn, with beveled corners. Those on the left side are oversized and vertically offset. This unique configuration was purpose-built for carrying tools and notepads varying in size. Smaller utility pockets are overlayed, originally designed for carrying a compass, pens, tools, or a pipe. Like the original, the snap-flap cargo pockets are single-entry from the top. The full-width, reach-through back pocket was designed for survey maps and charts, and just as useful today for gloves or other bulky items. The snaps are enameled like on our historic jackets, and even the fit holds true to history—an inch shorter in the body than our standard Cruisers.

Filson Appreciation Post: BIFL Best
I picked up a Filson Mackinaw jacket about 5 years ago, and I cannot imagine a wool jacket that is more durable. I genuinely don't think you could damage it without making a concerted effort that employed heavy-duty shears and/or a blow torch.

I have a buffalo plaid double mackinaw wool cruiser NLA) that is over 30 years old. It still looks like I bought it yesterday. Also two mackinaw wool vests same age, same condition.

I am saying that the newer manufacturing and build quality has decreased but the quality of the material has remained exceptional. For example, their staple mackinaw wool and tin cloth canvas is still top notch

Alternatives to Filson
I’ve had the vest for a couple of years and got the Mackinaw coat today. The wool is still amazing and the coat is fantastic. Perfect with a flannel

Cotton, Linen, Wool clothing recommendations?
Filson mackinaw wool. Linen, anywhere just look to see it's 100% linen and not some plastic trash blend.
