What are the up-and-coming companies known for quality goods?
\> Is it just me or do I not get the Patagonia hype? A hoodie, daypack and R1 I've had for 10+ years and used extensively are still almost like new. I swear by this brand.

Best winter parka money can buy?
100% wool base layers, like those from Smartwool can drastically improve warmth. Fleece midlayers like Patagonia’s R1 can add to that. I understand it would be preferable not to have to layer and for the parka to be sufficient but you seem to be on the extreme low end of the bell curve when it comes to perceiving coldness.

Looking for a good quality winter coat
I know this isn't what you asked for, but just something to consider. If I am moving around a lot and moving from indoor to outdoor a lot, I find that layers are much more helpful than a big a coat. Just something to consider. My favorite mid layer is anything that uses polartec's grid fleece technology, a lot of different brands use it, but the most popular is probably Patagonia's R1. This combined with a some kind of shell (I personally use Outdoor Research) is very warm. That said if you are just set on a thick winter coat, I like my Carhartt.

Anyone keep a “BIFL Roster”?
Patagonia has a few others IMO in various categories that could be considered: * Patagonia Blackhole bags/duffels * Patagonia Nano Puffs * Patagonia R1 line

In need of warm winter coat with a budget of $350-400
13 years ago, I had never heard of REI or baselayers and the Patagonia R1, R2 I got that day are still running. Made NYC winters and Cali desert winters survivable.
