Knife set for Christmas
Slightly unrelated but I dropped my Wüsthof 8” chefs knife and it broke in half. I emailed them and they gave me a store credit to purchase another one (at zero cost to me). It was extremely quick and easy. I got it in like 3 days. They stand behind their products and I I’m a customer for life..won’t buy another brand now. Your husband will def be happy with these knives.

BIFL Quality Knives that Last
Piggy backing this- Weight is a big consideration! German knives like Wusthof tend to run heavier than Asian knives. A lot of brands also have different lines amongst themselves like Wusthof Gourmet: budget line, stamped knife, traditional knife handle but cheaper construction (less metal used in construction) Wusthof Classic : mid tier line, forged (not stamped) traditional knife handle with more substantial construction (more metal) Wusthof Ikon: premium line, forged, ergonomic style handle with great construction. Depending on your food prep experience, you probably have a preference for what you like to handle, you won't know unless you try to handle the knives. I thought a japanese knife would be great, but I have a greater learning curve using a lighter knife since I'm used to using heavier German knives. Also, you might prefer a smaller chef's knife if you find that the standard 8 inch doesnt cut it. Some brands will carry a 7 inch chefs You do not need a whole knife set, a chefs knife, bread knife and paring knife will take you a long way. Build your set based on your actual needs. Santoku knives are great chef knife stand-ins for veggie prep I used to work at a home supply store. 🙃

Have never seen this happen with a Wusthof knife
That's so weird, right? I wonder when this particular defect started happening. My old Wusthof Grand Prix (I) circa 2008, thankfully, hasn't had any issues yet.

What’s a kitchen item you bought once and never had to replace?
To add on to this wonderful list, Wusthof makes knives with plastic handles now. The Gourmet line is just as high quality, just as well balanced, but MUCH more durable. If you are still training your loved ones NOT TO LEAVE KNIVES IN THE GOSH DARN SINK, the plastic handles will last much longer than the original wood. They don't look like plastic either, which is a plus. DON'T PUT THEM IS THE DISHWASHER. NO KNIVES IN THE DISHWASHER.
